This is exactly how we did it when I worked on the boats out of San Diego in the 70's. Fishing out of racks over the side. It was a great adventure for a young guy back then. Stayed out at sea for maybe 10 days or until we filled the hold.
My father was a captain of a tuna boat - Victoria. We have a lot of color film of the old style fishing and the introduction of the purse nets. I remember the smell of the canneries in San Diego - Mom would tell us that is the smell of money - ha ha ha Maybe I should get it from 8mm to digital.
Change it to more technology, these guys were very powerful and theink how surefooted! Standing/sliding in slime and a rolling deck! They are phenominal!
I worked on Michael Fowlkes' Tribute to Tuna, I can confirm that this is not the Michael Fowlkes production, but it looks like he used some of this archival footage. I don't know anything about fishing, but I was in awe of these guys fishing on the racks.
I went out on the Marina "D" out of San Diego in 1979 and fished from the racks. It will make a man out of you!

@@carolkruger5685 It was on 8mm Kodac color and was put on VHS - we do need to find it and get it digital.

There still are some crews in Japan that still commercially fish tuna this way.
I made a trip on the Karen Mary and had two friends work on the Marty B. These were Blocker boats run by the Blocker brothers.
Amazing incredible stout men of old! Wow! Wow! Wow!
You are correct. I have this video "tribute to tuna, fishing from the racks" Great video!! Amazing.... cane poles...chicken feather lures.......

If commercial purse seigns never came? We'd have this kinda fishing.they need to outlaw nets.just hook in line
I agree. Everything should be hook and line. More of a selective harvest. Creates jobs, what’s not to like.
