I love the symbolism of Mel attempting to kill a baby angel, basically the ultimate symbol of purity and innocence, and being foiled. It probably means something about her character, but idk what yet.
honestly imma question if its an actual angel or not.
The mother angel is actually giving an 'ars goetia' vibe. She could be raum, malphas, or another. They are all in fact fallen angels to note.
Beelzebub itself is named droped and the litterbugs are its minions. its possible its a case of the legions' that they are said to command in the ars goetia. its possible that the 'mother angel' is in fact a goetic demon, a fallen, who had weirdly decided to watch over these fallen souls. Possible their 'leions' are their demonic brood. beelzebub's brood sare used for food though.
however some of the loer implise that there was in fact some kinda infighting amongst the angels and virtue guys at some point too.

It reminds me of how her father looks at her. He doesnt want her to be soiled like they are and when she gets to put her money wjere her mouth is, she hesitated. THAT is what being a smiling dead is all about. Killing the very symbol of innocence is what it takes for her to be one of them and it turns out its a line both of them dread

I like to think that Mel is very careless because the idea that she is’t immortal is hard to believe when everybody else around her is. She goes around doing crazy things not understanding that she *can’t* sew on a new leg.
She just wants to be a member of the smiling dead, but Ken doesn't let her as you already know
I think it's also because she wants to die.
As a living human, she's a threat to be hunted down and killed.
In death, she's a full fledged member of the smiling dead.

Breadhead is the smartest since his head is huge, and part of that intelligence involves keeping it to himself, for everyone has secrets worth gaslighting. His abilities would be inconvenient to reveal, as he would be rendered as a target by some, an exploitable asset by others. That concludes my mini Ted talk.

@oriibow Miscommunication issues doesn't mean their relationship is automatically not wholesome, clearly Butcher cares for Mel a great deal. And Mel just wants to make him proud. People are complicated. To insinuate that something like their relationship can't be cute just because they haven't figured out quite how to communicate is wild.
He shouts and bullies her and she's driving herself to extreme measures to become the only kind of person he respects. Their dynamic is a shitshow. That's good. If it was uwu wholesome with no miscommunication there wouldn't be any development to do, and that's where Hazbin, for example, fell very flat.

I can't unsee it lol! Reminds me of those emo gritty shows you'll watch as a kid. Kinda like the same aesthetic with invader zim. Animation is great. Love it's like lower FPS of animation.
Or PSP, Wii or 3DS. Stuff like Insecticide, Mushroom Men and Dead Head Fred. It's the grimy greens and in two of them there's a detective/crime drama mystery going on. Fred could fit right in to the Gaslight District, with being a science revenant that has his brain and eyes in a jar which he can switch out for different heads to get different abilities.
Considering the giant insects in The Gaslight District too, Chris Lyszt (police inspector bug woman with four legs) could fit in as well, perhaps to a lesser degree.

well according to the creator of this series on twitter? Most of them came from Spindlehorse, the studio that made Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss.
Apparently the dude is a 'spindlehorse alumni' along with tons of other animators working in Glitch Productions.

Mel and Ken’s father-daughter relationship surprised me the most in how genuine it feels. An overprotective father who knows his daughter is an outlier and wants to protect her from the harsh world they live in.

The fact that the angels have black blood like Mel is an interesting thing. Yet they seem to revive just like the rotten… hmmmm
I mean judging by the image in temperance has she was born in heaven.
@ oh yeah! I wasn’t questioning her birth, I just think it’s cool the angels that are shown as ‘other’ to the rotten have the same blood as a human. But Mel is alluded to only having one life at the end unlike the rotten
There is never told that angels revive, virtues are no angels.
The thing is the "how" they revive:
When the Rotlings are brought back the sigil of the Black Hand is shown inside them and a green flash is seen. When the angel mother came back there was no sigil and the flash of light was pure white.
The result may be the same but the method is different

Mud certainly seems ignorant to Mel's secret, but I would not be shocked if Breadhead figured it out already and just doesn't care. Mel's family, and that's more important than prophesy.

The whole pilot feels like a short film by itself.
The fact its sectioned into acts, every one of these well structured respectively, just presenting the show like this hooks me immediately. Damn the visuals and sound designing alone are enough, but the storytelling here is just stellar.

WHAT a premise! One of my biggest issues with Murder Drones was how nonchalant the rampant death and destruction often was. But in a world where everyone is immortal, where violence and destruction mean nothing, where the populace has to get creative with how they 'get rid of' their enemies, and where the protagonist is the ONE person who can die? I am EXCITED for this!

True, the death was treated no non-chalantly, when it clearly meant a lot when it happened to the main characters, it always felt odd and took me out of the story. This doesn't tho, and it's also just rlly cool

I think Ken and the other “were” humans. They just have their souls bound to their undying bodies. That’s why he said at the restaurant “Mel still has her original parts” as a reason why she looked normal compared to the rest of them.
Ken doing a side quest was actually the reason why they failed. Together they could’ve done it way sooner, so the egg wouldn’t have had to hatch

I can't believe how good this is, it's amazing how multi billion dollar studios struggle to fulfill the audience but a small cast, a good idea, and talented animators can absolutely humble them
It's the concept of profit against passion. Big Hollywood studios will shell out movies and TV shows in record time if it means they get to see the dollars roll in. Small independent studios like Glitch not only take their time with their projects (this one took 2 years to make), but they also put their own passion and creativity into every detail of every second of every project they make. The same goes for indie developers in video games.

@lexgoesyeet 2 years is actually pretty normal considering this is a brand new show pitch, lasts 27 minutes, has this complex of an animation (even if 3D) and the studio is still working on other separate projects. I wouldn't say they really took their time with this, but they did make sure it's awesome. People really underestimate how long such productions take on average.

To be fair, it is not like we see better stuff from big production anyway. So the competition isn't exactly steep.
Having finally watched this, I will say, it feels like a lost pilot for a show from 2004-to-2007 that was never picked up but everyone who watches it would say "God, I wish this got a full series."
Except in this case it is actually getting a full series, so maybe this timeline isn't so bad after all...
...I will say, I am super happy folks like the comment, and I will add, go watch Deadtime Stories (the MTV one) and The Amazing Screw-On Head, because I was thinking a lot about those specifically when writing this.
Also Slow Bob in the Lower Dimensions. Which was way earlier and also good. And also Shane Acker's "9," which wasn't a pilot but it has the same vibes and dammit it deserved better! We coulda had more older-skewing non-comedy animated features if audiences weren't stupid!
I do love the detail that Mel most likely paints her face. In the scene where Ken bandages her scrape, we see a bit of her unscraped skin and it's much more human toned

i love the nervousness and doubt on Mel's face when Ken is announcing that they're going to kill the 'human'!! it's such a nice detail that really cements that she isn't all that confident in her place there and still has doubts despite what she says aloud.
definitely my favorite show on Glitch (and one of my favorite indie pilots ever)!! i hope this gets huge and i am so excited for a full season!!!

My guess is Mel might have been the human of the previous prophecy. Ken was tasked with killing her, but couldn't bring himself to do it. Instead, he pulled a fast one on the Gaslight District (similar to the plan Mel is attempting to pull in the present setting), faked her death, and subsequently adopted Mel as his "daughter".
Whether that's accurate or not, there's evidence Ken is involved in a cover-up of Mel's true identity of some sort. This is further evidenced by him deviating from the plan to kill the Virtue, Temperance, in the laboratory. Temperance stammers, _"I...I...I...kept my promise, Ken. I've never spoken a word - any of it - to anyone!"_ And Ken had a photo of Temperance holding a baby Mel in his arms next to a freshly cracked egg.

Love the references to Dantes inferno like the layer of the underworld where people are stuck in a frozen lake and paradise lost another work related to Dantes inferno. Really awesome series so far.
They also referenced Miltons paradise lost (albeit in a really obvious way lmao)

Loving the idea of the Virtues being nothing but robots with immortal brains and how they're represented as "pure" without the weakness of the flesh. Having your brain be digested ad infinitum is even more horrific than the drowning. I know the butcher's knife between Ken's head is likely a representation of anger issues or Borderline Personality Disorder, though it is particularly interesting how the brains are such a heavy focus between Ken and the Virtues he has a history with. Ken is a butcher with plenty of access to fleshy bits, Mud points out how Ken can just sew Mel new body parts if she loses any and Ken makes a point of reminding Mel that she has all of her original parts. And the human brain is a computer, whether the body is made of metal or meat.

I think what's interesting is that Ken looks ready to rupture an artery (or perhaps a whole-ass vein) anytime the Virtues are brought up. That isn't just some general dislike of an opposing faction; that reeks of personal and bitter resentment. Ken must have had at least one really bad encounter with the Virtues in the past with the cost being particularly heavy, and has not forgiven or forgotten since then.
@StarlitSpecterIm glad someone else noticed this. I dont want to dig to deep into theorizing because I would love to see the story unfold on Glitches time, but I see its hinting at Mud and Ken having worked with the virtues. When Mud sees Joshua, they have some sort of history that left Mud out in the cold. "I hate ya! Ill always hate ya! Ill never forgive ya!" And Ken and Temperance seem to have a similar relationship or transaction involving Mel.
Edit: Ken also seems to have a bit of a disagreement with the whole undead aspect of the Gaslight District, making it point Mel doesnt ever "die" and become a zombie. Im thinking that's why he's so protective of her. Even furthering that he did once work in Heaven

I think Mud and breadhead understood Jack, they know already that Mel is human, but they dont care because shes not a threat to them at all, shes family, which is why Mud seemingly dropped the question of "why are killing jack? I like jack" almost immediately.
Ken's reaction to that question is pretty suspicious, but more than that, I think if Mud knew, he'd understand why they'd have to kill Jack- they can't afford Mel's secret getting out, and Jack was clearly on his way to go spill the beans.
I wouldn't be surprised if Breadhead knows, however. He was present (sleeping in the breadbox lol) when Mel got her nosebleed. He's also the one who caught Ken and Mel (when Mel was injured) and shoved them in the back of the truck.

What I'm wondering is: why is Mel's mortal status such a big deal to everyone that isn't the SD? I get that it's clearly a big deal to the rest of the District, but why? Is Mel gonna turn into some hundred-winged angel of the apocalypse that wipes out the entire Gaslight District (essentially a far more extreme version of Hazbin's annual cleanses) at some point if left alone?

And concrete starts becoming brittle after 20ish years. But most likely start cracking within 5 due to the constant moving a drowning rottling would cause.
So it’s more of a “you drown enough for you to forget who cemented you, due to trauma of dying thousands of times”.

I absolutely love how some parts are so exaggerated to show how the characters feel. Like at the end with the egg cracking: the world around her goes black, the people show up one by one yelling "LIAR," they circle around her, encompassing her. Then she's with her dad, everyone just surrounding them. It's such a good way to show emotions! I love it so much.

@silver_duskconsidering almost everyone appears to be immortal/undead, and the undead likely can't reproduce bc of their junk situation, I'm guessing that Ken willingly took in Mel as his daughter in exchange for the angels and virtues getting their prophecy human in the midst of their chosen targets when the prophecy comes to fruition, but they didn't account for the possibility that said human wouldn't want to fulfil the prophecy

I like how Ken's brain flashes to the right side, implying some kind of mental condition that causes him to act with anger and recklessness. We can see when it happens next to the lab, that he realizes he's overreacting to his daughter and calms himself down, showing that this is a problem he's aware of and trying to work on for the sake of her. Really great stuff guys! Hope this doesn't get a dark evil fandom 😔

I think that due to the butcher's cleaver in his head he has a form of split brain syndrome, and the two halves of his brain don't work at the same time, and depending on the situation/emotions one side will take over as the primary functioning part of his brain.
