    Question . Do the cows eat the turnips out of the ground , or just graze off the tops ?

    • @Cotlandfarmer
      @Cotlandfarmer  2 года назад +1

      They eat the whole thing, took them a few days to start eating the bulbs but once they got the taste for the bulbs they were munching flat out.

    What kind of grass is this ?

    • @Cotlandfarmer
      @Cotlandfarmer  2 года назад +1

      Stubble turnips are part of the brassica family. It's a fast growing "catch crop" good to grow bulk quickly for dairy cows and good for fattening lambs and beef cattle. 👍

    What was the plant date and the first graze date

    • @Cotlandfarmer
      @Cotlandfarmer  2 года назад

      Planted early in April and started grazing at the end of June. Usually need 11 to 12 weeks after planting to start of grazing. 👍

      Brilliant idea, I've run out of grass last 2 years, been feeding straw for 3 weeks but cows have lost condition so I'm feeding silage now. Only did 1st cut and a bit 2nd cut. Grim winter ahead, need to change something going forward if N stays so expensive.

      The turnips have been a big help this summer but I am short of dry cow fodder for the winter. Need a few loads of hay I think.

      @@Cotlandfarmer or Oat straw and pour on Molasses, they will clean the floor. I've had 3 loads delivered for £80.
      Definitely gonna give your idea a go next spring in a field that's due to come out of grass and into WB. Either cut or graze mid May then direct drill ST. Graze mid August??

      If u sow in may and its dry and no rain they might not grow??
