This is a very common issue these cars have, and it is extremely dangerous. The part is $2 and it takes about an hour to fix if you've never done it. I made this video to help motivate people to fix it before anyone gets hurt. UPDATE 1965s need thes boost collar, part number 20010012.
I'm rebuilding a 63 what a pain in the ass but your videos are getting me through
Thanks for the video! Very helpful. I have a 66 and every time I turn the gear shifts. This is going to help a lot.
Just about lost my driver door today because of this. Thank you so much for making and posting all these videos. You have no idea how much these help man
Hey Nathan, new 69 Lincoln owner, really appreciate all your work you do bro, keep it up we are just learning from the pro. Thanks again.
Im hoping this is similar to the 69 coupe 😓 I’m attempting to repair my steering column this week because of this video. I’ve already ordered the parts. You made this look so simple. You’re my new hero bro! I need a gearbox removal video pls. No videos exist for the continental. I looked everywhere
Put this in my saved vids until it was time to address it. Got to I and discovered that I had to create a thin sleeve to fill in a small annoying gap still left after the collar. Greased it up and it started out rather stiff then eventually smoothed out to feel like a bearing. Considering metal spacers in place of the rubbery mounts on the steering box but I need exact thickness before I commit. Thank you for taking the time to bless us with these vids!
My friend at Detroit Deviant sells the steel spacers for the steering box.
Thanks for the video. I have never fixed this problem though I have been driving 61-63 Lincolns since 1970. I need to do this to my 62. I need to pull the rag joint and repair and FIX THE GROUND WIRE because it is broken and my horn doesn't work. Lol
Nathan… thanks for the video. The 3/4” bushing you show in your video doesn’t work on a 1965 Lincoln… the external dimensions of the bushing is too small. Also the steering shaft steps down to a size less than 3/4 inch and the plastic lower column sleeve prevents the bushing from seating in the correct position. Lincoln parts sellers was $75 for the rubber part…. I made one out of a hard rubber plug that I bought from my local hardware store for $2.69. Works perfect! Just wanted to let your viewers know.
Thanks
This is mentioned in the description, along with the correct part number. Thanks for the tip on the rubber. Maybe you could include a part number or specific description of what you got from ace.
Bro, u are absolutely awesome. Great content. Great camera work even though u don't know where the best place to mount it😂. Thank u for all the great short videos. Just bought a '65 so I will be contacting u some way somehow pretty soon.
Thanks for struggling with the camera to show us this. Took it from a daunting job to yeah, I got a couple hours to fix this on Saturday....... I think the multiple years you showed really helps too.
I appreciate all your videos. please keep making Lincolns great !
Your freaking awesome dude. You just made my day. Thumbs up. great video. I need the part you replace as a bushing inside the column. Wat size and where again ? Thanks
Thanks for making these videos man! Ive got a 64 hard top and love the car. Def a labor of love!
Saw this video before I was about to get engine put back in. Went ahead and took my column apart rag joint is in great condition. Just trying to find out how far down i will need to push the new bushing I purchased. Thanks and keep the videos coming.
About 1/16 to 1/8 inch pay the run of the shift lever.
I forgot to mention I have a 64 sedan. Thanks again
Thanks for the video.
Awesome video thanks!
Where do you buy the rag joints?
Hi Nathan thanks so much for your excellent video. You mentioned you posted photo of finished steering column using the 3/4 bushing from Tractor supply, could you please tell me where? Thanks Vinnie
Thank you Brother for posting this.. I just picked up a 67 2 door and it has the same problem.. also you have to move the shifter to make it start up? but as i was turning the wheel it did jump into R ... I don't know were to buy the spacer around here ? but i will find something? Thank you 100x
Good video Nathan! I am working on a '67 column to put that bottom bushing in. bought the 3/4 TSC bushing but after tapping it in with the deep socket it still has play between the inner column and the bushing........does the '67 take a different typs/size bushing?
I have a 1966 with tilt. My question is about the rag joint. Before I removed it, I pointed the wheels straight ahead and the steering wheel was centered. I am sure while wrenching the joint off the gear box shaft was moved. Does it matter how the splined side goes on in relation to the gear box shaft? Is it keyed? I noticed in the video that the column on the far left was a 1966. The splines are clean and crisp on one side but not the other. Mine is also like that. I will do the Tractor Supply fix for the bearing. Thanks for the nice video!
Hey friend I have a 68 sedan. Where can I get a lower column bushing and a shift tube insulator? One of the first things on my list is getting the steering column rebuilt. Thanks for the videos
Hi Nathan, very helpful video. The bushing should help the 63 I'm working on. The shift lever is worn at the detent and also the collar has slop at roll pin. Have you been able to re weld the end of the lever and remachine? And have you ever machined out the shift collar to install a small bushing for roll pin?
TOM MCCALLISTER nice talking with you yesterday. Let us know how it turns out.
Nathan Wilson do you know what the part number is?
Hey Nathan , I also want to remove and rebuild the steering column. Do I need to remove the whole lower section or the dash? Thank you sir.
Thanks Nathan..
Hey Man.!!
Thank You for the Video. F#@K
Yeah!!👍 That S#@T happened 2Me
On my 67' Lincoln Continental the 1st time I drove it home, right after I bought it!!..... The gear just F#@keN dropped 2 the lower gear & I would slowly lift it back 2 D. On 2 or 3rd time, it went right 2 reverse, it Locked!!, I slammed on my breaks!! Stopped her, I idled her 4 a minute. Placed back on D & held the shift gear until we made it home.😎
I really liked Da video. Do more on the Lincoln's. AmA keep an eye on Yo' S#@T!! Thanx Once again.

Idea for another video: the 1964/1965 ammater gauge. If it's not had the extra washer fitted as per the Service Bulletin, it could likely short to ground and burn down your car. Ask me how I know.
bigfancycar I did discuss that issues in another video. I think it was dash led video.
Hi Nathan
excellent video man. 64 sedan do I have to fully pull the steering wheel out to swap rag joint or can I just loosen it?
Thanks
Mark
You can just loosen it to pull it away from the gear box enough to get the coupler off.
Nathan I ordered exact bushing in video part # S1752041SC 3/4" ID from tractor supply for my 64 Is it correct for my year?
Hi Nathan
As always great videos. Question regarding the lower shaft bushing your installing.
ID 3/4” OD 1 7/16” on my 1964,
Will that bushing be too tight against the outer shifter tube?
I see there’s a lot of grease and is that enough?
Thx again for all the videos they really help all of us out tremendously
That should work fine in your 64.
Hi do you have the part number for the 64? Thanks! Mark
Really good video. Does the 69 model have that lower column bushing problem? i already fixed the upper bushing underneath the steering wheel. it was completely gone.. Now my only problem is that the car only starts on neutral..
3/4 id but what is the thickness on that sleeve?
Is there a special socket for the tag joint and the steering column bolt?
Just a 12 point 7/16 will work.
I’m trying to locate a 67 non tilt turn signal switch are you able to source one?
Quick question: does the steering column need to be pulled to replace the Neutral Safety Switch?
No. It's easy to get to, near the bottom of the column by the gas pedal. Two 1/4 screws.
@@NathanWilsonDrivingDreams Great! thank you for the response and posting these videos. The video really help a lot of us try things on our own first.
hello again lol. to remove the steering column do i loosen the coupling joint first or drop the column? thanks again, your videos are still helping many of us out with these lincoln’s
Do you install the new rag joint to the steering box first or the steering shaft? Or does it matter?
Either way.
Your awesome
Hi! On my 66 i have a Bracket from the wiper switch to the body and i do not know how to remove the lower dash because of that. Have you seen this before? How do i remove the dash?
I have a 67 lincoln continental, I replaced my rag joint and use the same piece with set screw that u used. I got it all put back 2gether, but when I'm backing into a space or make a sharp turn, it jumps out of gear. I need some info if possible.
Check the gear box bushings. There are three between it and the frame rail where the bolts go. Have someone turn the wheel all the way back and forth and watch to see if the steering box moves.
Hey Nathan, do you know where I can get a mounting bracket for my steering column, I have a 66. Thanks
Have you done a wiper motor conversion for a 67
andre smith Yes. I'm going to do a video next tine I build one.
@@NathanWilsonDrivingDreams did you ever make that video ?
hello I ask for help 😌 where can I get such a part for 64 lincoln can you please give me a link or help thanks
gotta 78 continental, what all columns are interchangeable?
Most are one year only.
My 67 steering column shifter moves when I turn the steering wheel any ideas ?
Most likely culprit is the three steering box bushings between the frame and the steering box. Have someone turn the wheel all the way while you look from underneath and you will see the steering box pulling away from the frame.
Nathan Wilson how can the be fix c
hi any chance you have window diagrams ? i have 1968 continental
