    Wonderful to hear a recent double bass concerto ! Martinssonis a fabulous orchestrator and the music is stellar ! Korngoldian old-fashioned Hollywood harmonies here and there but wonderful organization and melodies are back says this music : a good line is always a good thing . Memorable lines in soloist part . Enigmatic , stirring in slow movement . Long Cadenza at 27th minute movement ! The finale is exciting !!!

    That was great!! I especially liked the combination of contemporary, more atonal elements with really romantic/dramatic ones.

    I love the orchestration of this piece, the solo bass never gets drowned out by the full ensemble but is accompanied very well. Also love the Rhapsody in Blue reference at 6:05 :)

    Is it just me, or are all of the soloist's strings tuned up a minor third from the typical orchestral tuning (from E-A-D-G to G-C-F-Bflat)? I have heard before that soloists on the bass often tune their strings up a whole step (which would explain why Koussevitzky's concerto is in F# Minor), but never up a minor third. Would this just be another example of scordatura then? As a violinist, I know Paganini used scordatura in a lot of his pieces (violin concerto No. 1, Carnival of Venice, etc.), but I have never heard any other composers use it before. Anyway, great piece and great playing. I love the double bass and would like to write something for it sometime. I wish I could compose and orchestrate as well as Martinsson.

      It’s Actually F#,B,E,A lowest to highest which is the standard tuning used is most solos
      Dang I’m correcting a comment from 7 years ago💀

      @@GeckoBass wow lol thanks for reminding me this piece exists!!! But I'm actually right though, if you listen to the section right after the 10 minute mark you can hear him play the highest open string which is a Bflat, and also the second lowest open string which is a C.

      Tuning up a minor third is a less common solo tuning for bass, but it is sometimes used along with a few other tunings as well.

      It’s definitely used but not as common as the normal solo tuning

    do they ever put that fifth string/string extender on a solo double bass?

    • @christopherwagner2395
      @christopherwagner2395 3 года назад +1

      Extensions are found on all types of basses. The solo repertoire does not generally include extremely low notes however. In those cases the extension goes unused.
