- Red Hot Chili Peppers (couramment abrégé en Red Hot ou RHCP) est un groupe de rock américain formé en 1983 à Los Angeles. Leur musique mêle principalement des éléments de rock et de funk, avec des influences punk, metal et rap.
Les Red Hot Chili Peppers ont commencé à se faire connaître dans des clubs par des prestations très survoltées, avant d'enchaîner de nombreuses apparitions dans les festivals underground. Après la mort tragique du guitariste Hillel Slovak en 1988, ils ont commencé à écrire des textes plus profonds, accompagnés de mélodies plus complexes et recherchées.
En près de trente ans de carrière, le groupe a enregistré dix albums studio dont les plus vendus sont Blood Sugar Sex Magik et Californication, sortis respectivement en 1991 et 1999. Ils ont vendu plus de 60 millions d'albums dans le monde. C'est l'un des groupes de rock ayant classé le plus de singles n°1 au U.S. Mainstream Rock chart, à savoir 11 singles, dont les tubes planétaires Give It Away, Under the Bridge, My Friends, Scar Tissue, et Californication.
Après une pause d'environ deux ans, durant laquelle chaque membre se consacrait à d'autres projets musicaux, les Red Hot Chili Peppers ont retrouvé le chemin des studios le 12 octobre 2009, comme l'avait indiqué le batteur Chad Smith au magazine Rolling Stone en août. L'album sera écrit sans John Frusciante, celui-ci ayant quitté le groupe en 2008. La nouvelle a officiellement été annoncée le 16 décembre 2009 par le guitariste sur son site et son blog Myspace, laissant une lettre à l'adresse de ses fans. Josh Klinghoffer a confirmé qu'il était le nouveau guitariste du groupe.
Les Red Hot Chili Peppers ont sorti leur dernier album en date, I'm with You, le 29 août 2011.
Retour en force avec Stadium Arcadium
Le groupe sort en mai 2006 Stadium Arcadium, véritable retour aux sources du groupe et mélange de genre avec des morceaux funk et d'autres plus mélodiques. Toujours produit par Rick Rubin, l'album a pour premier single le tube Dani California et contient également le single Snow (Hey Oh) et Tell me baby. Dani California a fait l'objet d'une polémique. En effet, Dan Gaffney, un animateur de radio américain, affirme que ce titre est un plagiat d'une chanson de Tom Petty sortie en 1993 et nommée "Mary Jane's Last Dance". Toutefois, Tom Petty a refusé de poursuivre les Red Hot, ne croyant pas à leur volonté de copier sa chanson. Le riff est également très semblable à un riff d'une chanson de Metallica sortie en 1983 "The four Horsemen".
C'est un album très important car c'est la première fois que le groupe fait trois albums consécutifs avec la même formation, qu'ils sortent un double album et surtout, qu'ils composent autant. En effet il y a en tout 38 chansons écrites mais seulement 28 gardées pour le double album, bien que ce genre de cas arrive à chaque album. Elles sont d'ailleurs toutes écrites par Anthony Kiedis qui, grâce à son autobiographie, s'est, selon le guitariste John Frusciante, "libéré de l'espace dans sa tête : après la sortie du livre, il a écrit les paroles de 38 chansons ! Incroyable de sa part ! ". "On s'est réunis et notre travail d'écriture initial était de faire un album court. Trois mois plus tard on avait 38 chansons, qui avaient sens et matière à être enregistrées" confie le chanteur. Et lors d'une interview, quand on lui a demandé ce qu'ils allaient faire du trop-plein de chanson il répond : "On va leur payer des funérailles militaires. Non, pas vraiment. On va [...] essayer de les faire sortir par n'importe quel moyen. Je pense qu'elles sont aussi bonnes que les autres." Chose à moitié faite puisqu'une partie de ces chansons a été mise sur les différents singles.
Avec la sortie de Stadium Arcadium, la maison de disques (Warner Music) offre aux fans la possibilité d'acheter de nouvelles versions des quatre albums précédant "Stadium Arcadium" avec deux ou trois morceaux inédits par album (B-Sides).
Selon les estimations, le groupe aurait vendu 69 600 000 albums depuis le début de sa carrière.
Stadium Arcadium est le neuvième album studio des Red Hot Chili Peppers. Il est sorti dans les bacs le 9 mai 2006 en France.
