Hardly essential. Age 67, I'm the dinosaur who never had any computer on bike. When I eventually had my daughter's old Nokia phone forced on me, I had to take it on rides so wife could contact me. I used to sketch relevant notes from Ordnance Survey maps and carried the map in my head when I had no GPS mapping.
All great apps, however, here in North America we tend to use an app called Ride with GPS. It’s very similar to Strava but with some other added features. Ride safe!
To all the Komoot users: Is the voice navigation only available with a paid subscription? Audible navigation is something I really need. But I'm cheap 🤑 don't know if I'm willing to pay for it.
i like using adidas running app because you can use it for cycling (it has cycling setting that you have to change from running) and with iphone and apple watch you can use the heath app to get your heart rate while cycling (both average & max). it also uses gps to show your trip on map. the companion watch app allows you to start your session without having to turn your phone on. and if you want the phone app works like bike computer.
I use Ride with GPS. Really great software. I download Strava as well but the only thing I use it for is to steal routes from other cyclists to upload to RWGPS. You also did not mention another great program: Komoot. Everyone should downloads that one as well.
I also use an app on Android called netweather storm radar. The free version has a 15 minute delay rain radar which allows to see if there's rain about and where it is. Been times when looking at the grey skies would have stopped me going out but with this app you could make a valued judgement and embark on a ride without rain gear...
Hi Julian, thanks for the tip. I’m currently looking at several other weather apps as I have realised there are some very specific and very accurate ones out there. Anything to avoid the rain!
Hi Leonard, was unsure where to ask this but was wondering what tips you have for staying warm on a ride and essential winter gear to purchase? (I live in Sydney and it is almost winter). Perhaps this could be a video? Tom
Hi Tom, I’m always very happy to receive suggestions so thank you. I’ll see what I can do about making the film. Basically the trick is to dress in layers. Mind you, I’ve experienced August in Sydney first hand and it was 18 degrees. That would be short kit weather here in the UK!
I use map my ride but been thinking lately of maybe switching to Strava. Leonard have you tried map my ride and if so perhaps a comparative study video would be useful for your viewers. Thanks !
i use strava but it doesent have a speedometer only average speed so i use a bicycle speedometer app so i can see my current /avg/max and trip distance ,no data required as its gps and free
I have use Garmin products for years and currently use 1030. Very good and usually uploads before I get in the house after I switch it off. You may need to use GarminConnect to help with the upload. Also very easy to use.
Road ID - for peace of mind. It’s an app from the makers of the Road ID Bracelet. It’ll allow up to five people to track your ride in real time. If you stop moving for more than five minutes, it’ll send an emergency alert to those contacts. What I also like about it is that it has a customizable lock screen for your phone which displays emergency contact phone numbers and medical information in the event you can’t speak for yourself. Available both on Android and iOS
Hi Mark, that’s another great app. Having an emergency contact number on us is one thing but something that actually alerts some one in an emergency is an essential. Looks like I’ll have to make another film with some more apps.
I'm using openRider in Android & iOS, it connects well with smart watches & absolutely free. It can tells the weather, connects to heart rate monitor and friends.
Garmin connect is much more useful than strava, it uses firstbeat analytics to crunch your metrics, giving more accurate and clearer feedback, plus it's free.
sadly my favourite cycling app is no longer, it was what to wear cycling, picked up the weather from yer phone or where you were going and told you what kit is the most appropriate
Beware! Strava starts off Free But it is not and is almost impossible to cancel tge subscription! It is almost $60.00 a year! I had to jump thru a ton of hoops to get my refund! Just saying
I've heard similar stories about how hard it is to cancel a Strava subscription. I'm only on one of their minimum paid accounts so its a lot less than $60 a year. Still, its good to know.
As a Husky guy myself, I totally respect your content. I got into biking and find your videos very accessible from a newbie's perspective

I have used Mapmyride for android for about 3 -4 years. It also syncs with myfitness app.
Thanks for the tip, John.
I use MapMyRide as well. Good basic app. I can toggle my activities between cycling, hiking and kayaking. I also like relive.
Hi yes agree I use map my ride very good, like the way it gives me voice updates on kms,
I give it a thumbs up even before I’ve seen it.😄👍🏻
Thanks Mark.

I’ve heard good things about RWGPS
I have Komoot on my phone which is fantastic navigation app for cyclists.

I've been using Komoot but my friend uses Strava and says it's very good. I'm not sure I'd use half of what it offers though.
@leonardmlee, I LOVE Strava and Komoot whenever I get on my bike, It works well with my Wahoo Elemnt Bolt, I'll have to try Relive.
Hi Leonard, have you thought about revisiting this, to see if there is any new apps out there to top these
That’s a fantastic idea, thanks.

+EzaVinylAddict I’ve not tried it. I’m pretty happy with Strava as it does everything I need and a bit more.
i use strava but it doesent have a speedometer only average speed so i use a bicycle speedometer app so i can see my current /avg/max and trip distance ,no data required as its gps and free
I’m assuming it’s me but Relive doesn’t give me the option to connect to Strava. It does for Ride with gps and various other trackers but not Strava.
It’s no longer to connect Strava and Relive but it is still possible to upload the GPX file generated by Strava directly.
Strange that they don’t connect to the most popular cycling app out there.
@@lunepilot2874 I know. Strava had a major falling out with many third party apps. Relive was one of them.
S Health synced to Strava. I have Wahoo sensors for cadence and heartrate.
I've heard that the Wahoo sensors are great.
Does the garmin edge 1030 upload activity to the strava app? I’m gonna upload a few apps

@@reidwagner1508 thanks for responding.
Trailforks for MTB has a nice feature that includes your GPS coordinates if you need medical attention or help.
Hi Sean, thanks for the tip. Many other apps will send out an emergency message if they detect a fall but not many will include GPS coordinates.

I like Ride with GPS, I found it before I knew about Strava and it suits my needs for the time being so I've stuck with it.
If it works, why change it?
I'm using openRider in Android & iOS, it connects well with smart watches & absolutely free. It can tells the weather, connects to heart rate monitor and friends.
Thanks Sabir. Sounds like a great app. I’ll have to look it up.

Have a look at Komoot.

Hi Ritchie, that certainly would have been useful. How come it is no longer?
it needs to be updated for ios 11
I’ve heard of several apps that won’t update because of iOS 11.
All these app need to connect to Strava for one or another reason, so there is only one app for cyclist that do all that cyclist want isn’t it?
You could not be more wrong.
