Tuya is an important part of the DIY home automation ecosystem, but it's easy to underestimate everything that it can do. In Part 1 of this mini-series I explain what Tuya is, and why it's so attractive to appliance manufacturers. Why don't they all just make their own apps and IoT infrastructure? There's more to it than you may think!

This is going to be an awesome series. I love it.
Thanks Rob! It won't be up to your standard, but I'm doing my best :-)
I really like the breakdown of the modules. Very useful information.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the series!
Interesting stuff... Can't wait to see the follow on contents on tuya 👍
Looking forward to the series. Hats off Tuya.
Hi Jonathan,
This quite interesting topic! Looking forward to watch the rest of the series.
Despite seeing the name Tuya associated with loads of different manufacturers, I never stopped to think about what Tuya was exactly but now I know! Looking forward to the rest of this series 👍🏼
Great intro to Tuya, will be following the rest of your series.
Cheers from Singapore
Cant wait. I have always wondered what Tuya has to gain as it looks like using their cloud infrastructure is free. I wish someone would really explain that part for me.
Nice work Jonathon - appreciate seeing info on upgrading/enhancing Aussie certified hardware
Thanks for the video. Just started with Tuya, glad to have some info to go about. looking forward for the next videos.
Very clear explanation. Subscribed
Looking forward to see the next episode, waiting. Hurry man
It's just uploaded, and should be public tomorrow :-)
I have several of the Arlec power boards & an Arlec WiFi ceiling fan/light combo. Has been frustrating that these product are difficult to add to home automation. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
I'm really keen for this series. Amazing to actually see products from Australian retailers too. I've subscribed and hit the bell for notifications.
Thanks! Part 2 just uploaded and should be public tomorrow. Part 3 is already mostly filmed and edited.
Will be interesting to see how you're going to load Tasmota OTA as the "old" method using tuya-convert doesn't work with the recent (still espressif chipsets) tuya devices as the stock firmware now has changed to stop tuya-convert.
Great video Jon. Did my first TuyaConvert a few months ago which went smoothly, however there was no way to work out if the device had an ESP in it. I got lucky on the second purchase. Looking forward to the micro swap.
Great video and very informative for newbies. Thanks
Nice simple instruction.
I always learn new things on your channel, thanks mate
Quality content. Well done and well presented.
Really looking forward to this series. I have seen certification for the Sonoff TH16's in OZ so I have been using them. I've also been using the Local Tuya integration in Homeassistant. This isn't as good as flashing new firmware and it a bit fiddly to get the local key for each device but works great.
Very informative and well presented. Keep up your great work
I look forward, thank you
This will be neat!
Nice list of what you need to consider. But I am missing one important thing. But that's not your fault. Most IoT suppliers seem to forget about it.
Security!
That's absolutely right. I've talked about it on previous videos but I should have mentioned it here. In part 2 I talk about Tuya having access to all your device activity.
Yes. Any Tuya devices you have will be accessible to the Chinese government.
@@marcus3d then they have to get through our firewall first. And circumvent any traffic monitoring.
You can hide a lot on devices, but once you need to exchange information there will be anomalies in the network traffic.
@@PeterPetersNL Tuya devices don't even start to work without first contacting China. And even if you run Tuya "Local" they still report to China, although this can be prevented if you block *outgoing* traffic to those IP ranges. Maybe. We don't know if they have proxy hosts too, so you better prevent all outgoing traffic. (Well, at least TCP and UDP.)
@@marcus3d we switch them on in a blocked network (no outgoing or incoming traffic) and they are recognized by Home Assistant without any problem.
Great News . Thank you for sharing
So excited!
The new chips are made by bekken. Someone went through a crazy amount of effort to write some software that is essentially a tasmota replacement. Awesome!
It's called openbk.
Good on ya :)
This series turns up at the perfect time for me. I was looking at Tuya IR blasters to control some A/Cs via ESPHome. I’ve since learned all the blasters for sale have moved away from ESP now. I’m curious to see my options.
Is there scope for an intermediate level video? I would like to add a temperature sensor to the IR blaster. ESPHome documentation makes it look like I just need to find a spare GPIO.
Gonna be interesting to see how you address the issue of tuya-convert being completely busted for OTA flashing now that Tuya changed the keying method and blocked them out. I bought a ton of Tuya smart plugs and discovered they're all useless junk to me now because you now have to disassemble them to flash 3rd party firmware, and they're so full of glue that it's impossible to open them without destroying them.
There are still devices that work with Tuya-Convert. Part 2 has just uploaded and will be public tomorrow, showing how I used it with Kogan smart plugs that I bought recently. It really sucks if they've stuffed the device with glue. That's just nasty.
@@SuperHouseTV Mine are the Aoycocr ones. Avoid them. The inside is about 30% full of that horrible yellow-white glue you usually see around capacitors and transformers in power supplies.
@@SuperHouseTV Perhaps it's different in AUS but in Europe most tuya based devices now have had firmware modified such that tuya-convert doesn't work. If you haven't done already, it may be worth mentioning this in your video before people start buying tuya devices and then being very disappointed.
I know the videos in this series are probably already shot, however one request would be to cover flashing Tuya motion sensors
I want to do a series of very short videos about specific devices. I'll see if I can find a Tuya motion sensor.
What about Tuya local, where you are running it locally say through Home Assistant, independent of the Tuya server? It does not require internet access to operate, so if your ISP falls over, you can still use it.
This is only part 1 of a miniseries. The first 4 parts are set (and the first 3 are already filmed) but I'm thinking about doing part 5 about Tuya Local.
still waiting on part 3 and 4...
Hi Jonathan, Do you know are the TYWE4S chips supported that are used in Arlec Grid Connect Smart DC Ceiling Fan's? You only mention TYWE1-3.
one thing that is a little confusing is the branding of the app (like 'grid connect') and compatibility between those brands on tuya. can they be used in the same app?
My Grid Connect smart switch can also be run through the Tuya app.
I wonder if the Tuya name is a play on words: "Need IoT integration? Let us give it Tuya!"
It is a SFT, School For Things!
so the kogan smart plug still supports OTA? quick whats the link to this!! im finding it impossible to find any plug to use tuya convert on... thanks mate.
I bought 6 of them a few months ago, and Tuya-Convert has worked fine with them. Hopefully they haven't updated the firmware or changed the modules since.
@@SuperHouseTV im not going to risk it. Blackadder says they are no longer compatible since May 21.
thx u
just like audiophiles have reference tapes, ytphiles need to download this video as reference
Coool
I hope it's not going to be like: Rock solid WiFi for home automation, part 1, you got hundreds of people wanting part 2 that never arrived - sorry
Parts 2 and 3 of this series are already filmed and 90% edited. I could release them today if I had to, so I think it's safe :-) This entire video was originally just the introduction to a huge video that covered all the different options, but I've sliced it into shorter segments. I think it'll be more useful this way because people can refer to just the method they want.
@@SuperHouseTV can't wait Jonathan
You might want to be a little cautious handing over private data to Tuya. Do a little digging first.
The entire point of those videos is about changing Tuya devices so they *don't* do that. It's right there in the title: Tasmota conversion!
