it's supposed to be a team based game, not do whatever you want as hog, and still win. Hog warps the game around him, every time he is good. 2 to 3 different characters on the enemy team, must swap to deal with him, because one is not enough if the hog isn't dogshit.

Here is my idea what they could do about Hog
1. Shorten the Range of his hook.
2. Let his hook have a wind up. Say he twirl his hook above his head. The longer the twirl it the farther it goes and the longer the CD. He can use a quick hook to interrupt the other tank ability. But if he want to go for the back line, he would need to wind up. This allow the opponent to see the wind up and do a counter play, beside an instant death out of nowhere.
3. Give a small delay after hook before he can shoot. Again give more counter play for people who get hooked.
4. If he hook a wall he get pull toward it. Balance...Hell no...Funny as hell though.
1 and 3 are okay balance wise but make the character feel much worse to play. 2 is a pretty cool idea but would probably suck ass if it made the cd longer the longer it goes. 4 needs to be implemented in the april fools patch
They should just lower his damage give him 2 hooks(or shorten the cooldown when he connects the one hook he currently has), extend the range by like 5-10 meters and make it to where hog can just fling you since you would still be able to punish out of position people just instead of one hitting your team just firing squads them

When the first person was saying how hog would be useless without the one shot and gave all the “reasons”, every time I literally just thought, “and the problem is?”
The problem is Hog is still a very fun character to play as for a lot of people, and nerfing him into the ground isn't the way to go. Not only is it unfair for Hog players, but it's bound to be reversed in time again, like it's happened before. If Hog can't keep his one-shot hook, then he needs more utility. A rework is the way to go.

@@guillemmoreno5522 yeah, I think very few people are actually advocating for hog to be massively nerfed and more want his utility moved from having a long range disruption tool that one shots like 80% of the roster to something more appropriate for a high survivability tank (such as his heal providing some benefits to nearby teammates).
I’m not sure he should necessarily lose his hook as I think it could be a good tank tool for enabling teammates (if like he had a much bigger end lag on it so hook kills would mainly be pulling people out of cover to your dps) but a 700 health hero with the ability to self heal and one shot is just broken. I’m sure its fun, as all op characters are to play, but it’s better for the game to not have that. I don’t think a single hog defender would have advocated for brig to remain un-nerfed after she was released for the exact same reason of “fun to play, not fun to play against”. Just hard to have an op character be so fun to play for so long and having to give it up.
@@-NoNo. have they? I can't think of many examples of heroes that never ended up in a somewhat healthy place through tweaks or straight up reworks. And the few that are having fundamental issues now with their kit, like Brig for instance, are bound to be reworked at some point, like it's happened with others.

The guy at the beginning really thinks that Roadhog's one shot is the base of the game and that if you remove it magically the whole game goes to hell. The worst thing is that he really thought about it and said: "Yep, all the sense in the world".
From my experience, ow1 did go to shit after Hog was nuked. Hopefully doesn’t happen again

Dunmuir has the best OW tip shorts. They’re straight forward, to the point, and give you actual digestible and usable tips that aren’t just explaining the heroes abilities. They’re always things you wouldn’t know just not playing the character.

I've been thinking about ways to rework Hog and here’s what I came up with:
Make hook an entirely separate melee weapon that Hog can switch to in a similar fashion to mercy with her handgun.
He could have two seperate LShift abilities that change depending on the weapon he has out.
*Weapon: Chain Hook
- Similar DPS to Brigs mace but with slightly longer range and more of a horizontal attack animation (it would have sweep similar to other melee weapons and be good for demanding space from large groups of enemies)
- LShift ability would be renamed to 'Hook Pull' but would otherwise be the same
- Wind-up on Hook Pull to allow for counter-play (swinging above head like a cowboy rope or bola etc)
- Hook Pull can be cancelled but it will go on cooldown
- No capability for one-shot kill due to Chain Hook being the equipped weapon and weapon switch time causing a large enough delay for most/all characters to get away.
*Weapon: Scrap Gun
- Reduce damage per pellet by 5% to 15%
- New LShift ability 'Hotshot' which has an 8 second cooldown (same as hook) and allows Hog to fire a single shot with 2x regular spread that ignites (think Ash's dynamite).
- Increased clip size from 5 to 6
*Utility: Take a Breather (Vape)
- 1.5s anti-heal after use
*Overall:
- Higher skill ceiling now that he has to manage the use of Chain Hook and Scrap Gun (and when to have which one out)
- Chain Hook would be better for environmental kills/dealing with squishy's, and Scrap Gun would be good for tank dueling and fighting groups
- Small cooldown between weapon swapping (1 to 2 seconds)
- Slight nerf to Hogs movement speed (3-5%) to accomodate for his melee sweep capabilities and to prevent oppressive 1v1 chase downs.

I'm convinced people who think hog is fine where he is and people who drink hot dog water are one and the same.
Hog player here, Hog always had the potential to be good, just the environment around him with the overwhelming amount of shield and amount of players (6v6) made his hook less accessible when the map is bombarded with shields. Plus, an insta kill in a 6v6 environment would make it a 6v5 which is way different than gaining an insta kill in a 5v5 making it a 5v4. I've been saying this since beta 1, I noticed how better my games have been on hog and I immediately understood: Less tanks to combo, more squishies to hook, no shields to stop you, your insta pick is more valuable in a 5v5, you have 700 fucking hp and with a 350 regen that will only take 1 second of your time, so it's safe to say, the transition from overwarch 1 to overwatch 2 for Hog was an automatic buff for him, and if you can't see it, we'll I'm sorry to say but your brain equivalents to a peanut shell. Main reason why Hog wasn't as oppressive in overwatch 1 was also the fact he was so easily countered (hence why you can say bastion isn't op either) but when you have something like a kiriko to implement him to overcome a counter, don't you think all this is an overwhelming amount of buffing even though it wasn't "added in the patch notes?" Love the content flats, I've been waiting all night for your content drop at this hour, see you man and take care everyone

Jo dear Flats editors there is a guy named Sarius who made a 'rework for every support' video. They are mostly full broken but Flats would still love it (also they are crazy creative), overall great content!

Most ideas are honestly fine (given a bit of tweeking). It's just the kiriko, lucio and kiriko takes that are outright awful.
If you'd like to try submitting those videos for Flats to watch, try joining his discord. He's got a section dedicated to tiktok submissions that the mods go through before Flats watches them on stream. I'd love to see him react to that type of content.
i liked the ana suggestion, letting her go invisible when crouched, which is anti-mobility to a kit that doesnt have any, but does buff her survivability (though make it so she turns visible for a second when firing) .... its actually.... pretty balanced i think?

I feel there are 2 ways to fix roadhog, rework the hook or replace it with a completely new ability. I think adding a audible windup to the hook would be a decent rework as it would make it possible to react to it. I also think they could replace it with a close quarters stun similar to mcrees old stun but in melee form.
Make its reach 2/3rd of what it is now, but also reduce its cooldown to 2/3rd of current timer. Make him not one-shot, but instead give him more ammo. Reduce hp but give armor. Done. Now Hog is an area denial tank that uses hook for displacement of opponents, rather than going for solo elims and lurking in the corners. Now his value comes from displacement and his team's ability to follow up on his hooks, making him more enjoyable to play with becase you actually can contribute more to Hog's plays as a team mate, rather than him just walking around doing his own thing every 8-10 seconds in the fight.
or tone down his insane survivablity.. The survivablity is really the problem.

I think a good rework to hog would be to rework his hook to have a charge up animation to it. For example the hog would need to pull out the hook and swing it like a wrangler. When swinging, hog’s movement is slightly reduced but has some damage mitigation. The hook length will increase with more time winding up like orisa’s ult. This wind up will make the hook still able to instant hook close range targets but allow long range targets to react and counter.

I wanna say just tactical nuke Roadhog because its the easiest fix to the entire meta, but when you can only have one tank per team it feels like there's a necessity to make all of them viable. As a winton enjoyer I don't like the hog meta either, but taking his one shot I think will make him worse than prebuff JQ who we've spent 1 and a half seasons trying to balance

I think what they should have done with the 2 shield meta was may be increase Hogs damage against shields instead of overall. Surprised there isn't a heroe who does that but I guess that might just put Reinhardt further in to the ground and just make him completely irrelevant
What pisses me off is that I remember Reins shield being 2000 hp. All the time I play Rein I just picture me strangling the people who had his shield nerfed.

I can understand wanting your one shot to stay because it’s just about all you have atm but that’s what a rework is for, to give him something besides the one shot to do.
Also even if they reduced the damage of the hook so you can’t one shot squishes, there is a thing called “Voice Chat” you can use to tell your teammates when you’ll hook for them to capitalize on it.

My only issue with the idea of "the game was great when hog was dead" is that blizzard seems to not want any hero to be objectively bad and I agree. The main reason being that people are going to play heroes regardless if its a throw pick. I cant stand when i have Rein players picking him in situations where hes objectively trash. If Roadhog becomes objectively bad like he was before, your going to have more players sticking to them and making their team suck because of it

I've seen a lot of suggested reworks and nerfs for Roadhog, but I feel a fair number of them miss the mark. Probably the most common approach I've seen is to introduce a delay between when the hooked target lands, and when he can shoot; I feel this would be a mistake. Effectively, this guarantees any hero with a "get out of jail free card" type self-peel can almost ignore his hook entirely. While coordinated play could probably adequately make use of Hog's hook in that case, solo queue players get shafted. I think a better approach is to simply move some value away from his hook and heal, and into other abilities. My suggestions are as follows:
1. Replace Roadhog's left click fire with his right click fire. Pre detonation ball continues to deal 50 damage. Maximum damage of a fully detonated ball is reduced to 95, and damage fall-off starts at 20 meters instead of 15.
2. Reduce Roadhog's HP back down to 600, and his initial heal to 200. Now continues to heal for 6 seconds after Take a Breather, up to 100.
3. Increase Hog's melee damage from 30 to 45.
4. Reduce the damage of Hog's hook from 30 to 15. Now applies a 30% slow for 3 seconds after landing.
I believe this accomplishes a few things:
1. Encourages Roadhog to continue playing at his preferred hook range of 20 meters. Keeps his damage relevant at his ideal range, but falls off sharply inside or outside of that. This allows heroes who were previously seen as 'counters' to Hog to reclaim that title(looking at you, Reaper), while maintaining his identity as "scary tank that can deal loads of damage in the mid-ish range if you're not careful".
2. Roadhog's tankiness is a subject of sore debate. While a tank should be tanky, they shouldn't feel unkillable. Nerfing his bulk and encouraging him to plan his escape route to make use of his heal over time seems to me a good middle ground.
3. Prevents Hog from feeling neutered inside his ideal range. He's still going to want to draw distance in the fight, but this should prevent him from being a complete wet noodle up close.
4. Enhances his team's ability to follow up on an opening he's created. The slow should be short but prominent enough to make a hooked Tracer crumple quickly, but not so overburdening that it's a death sentence. Give his hooks a severe disadvantage, but make it winnable.
A hook>shot>melee combo under the proposed changes deals 160 damage, or 208 under a Mercy boost, which I feel is a fair number. In addition, I feel this zoning playstyle better suits his ultimate(fling people away so I can get them into my ideal range), so I wouldn't make any changes there.

In league hooks are used to isolate people from their team and pick them off with your high damage dealers. Characters with hooks generally need follow ups, but have extra cc to their kits to enable that. I would imagine blizzard would need to give roadhog some extra cc, like zarya's grounding effect in her ult, on hook if they remove his damage.
you forgot about the ball meta, which was basically at the end of overwatch 1. And you would run either sigma or hog.
Destroy hogs own damage. Reduce hook cooldown. Turn wherever you want when you hook someone. Reduced cooldown on vape or make it like bastions old self repair where you hold it to sustain heals. Hook people behind you and just start cranking out vape and being a meat shield so whoever got hooked can’t get out of that door.
Main issue you'll have o deal with if Hog is dumpstered is anyone who still wants to play hog now being your tank. You walk out of spawn 4v5

As a Hog enjoyer™ myself,his biggest problem to me is his super cracked survivability,a half health heal which grants 50% DMG reduction,he can still move and it gives him ult charge,which is just WAY too much
I believe they should reduce his movement speed while healing by roughly 30% (maybe a bit less),and reduce the DMG reduction to just 20%,which should counteract his bullshit oneshot,by making it more risky to be aggressive. You can only really have one of the two,can't have both or it just makes a soujourn clone.

When the game was 6v6 Hog was more tolerable since you had a second tank bodyguard, but he is really awful to play against in 5v5

I feel like people really downplay how valuable it is to have great survivability as a tank. Orisa is a strong pick right now, put simply, because she just cannot die. Obviously there's more to it than just that, but simply being able to constantly exist and be even just moderately threatening is a formula for a very strong tank character
They should give hog 2 hooks like junkrat’s 2 mines, and then double hogs damage so he can one shot people better. This would fix the game (at least for me)

I actually thought of a rework for his hook. He can hook an enemy, but then he swings said enemy and throws them, if he hits another enemy they both take damage, but this also keeps the enemy team close together and removes his one-shot

I love how makoa from paladins is often called poor man's roadhog but there's 3 things to look at

I think hog should just get the orisa treatment and balance him towards just being an unkillable menace. The best counter to orisa is ignoring her and harassing the backline. They could remove hogs one shot but improve the hook itself so if a Winston or something pushes past you, you can force him back to the frontline using your presence to protect your team.
Idea for hog get rid of his gun and give him 0 colldown on his grab and make him stationary when he heals boom its amazing hog that's still playable

I’ve been a hog main since the beta on ow1, it was the only tank I enjoyed. Got to high masters and all. Since like season 1 of ow2 he’s just felt off. Like he’s miserable to play as and against. It’s like sojourn, but you have a 15 minute queue . So now I just main Lucio, since hog is ass to play as and genji my beloved got nuked

Look, I believe in karma. If my character had to be made useless for the health of the game, so does yours, hog enjoyers.
The game was so great in fact, that no one played it and it died.
The terrible ranked mode also promotes the high survivability-one shot heroes. Meaning if support or DPS is an ass you make up for it by surviving and one-shotting. If your tank is an ass you just lose. This promotes those selfish characters more and suppresses the characters that require more teamwork. I 100% think all MT metas in OW2 will only either be in TOP 100 games or OWL everywhere else the Offtanks will always be the No. 1 - 4 best Tanks.
Sojourn is literally only a problem for at most 10% of the player base. They are in no rush to change her, there is no real need to change her.
IMO the best changes to make for hogs hook is to 1. shorten the range by like literally half so he has to be in your face or very close. hes a tank afterall and hes supposed to be the hero that pushes your team forward, playing passive roadhog feels way too braindead. 2. make the hook hitbox smaller. sometimes it feels like I got snatched even tho I was relative distance away from the actual hook. I think these changes would make him harder to play as, and keep him as a relatively decent option tho. maybe add like 2-4 seconds for cd too
I get the last guy in my feed a lot and so far his tips have been super helpful.
It's genuinely hilarious that so many people still do not understand this basic part of game design: If a character being good keeps the game from being fun, then their design is unhealthy for the game and should be changed.
