  • I often get the question, “How much does it cost to have a baby in the first year”. You asked and I will do my best to answer how much one of MY babies cost me in their first year of life. There is literally no way to have a single answer that applies to everyone, so I am just speaking from my experience. I will go over the cost to deliver a baby in the US, the cost of daycare, how much baby formula and food costs and ill be throwing in some baby tips and fun facts along the way.

      Yes, but your taxes are much higher compared to USA. I have the best private health insurance here, and it cost me $0 for childbirth as well, and if I have to pay copays, it’s a fixed $15. Most Americans get insurance through their jobs, which pay for their workers insurances, which is zilch out of pocket.

      I don’t know where you’re getting your info from but most people in the US have to pay for their own insurance. I only know of a handful of people who have their employer completely cover their insurance for them. I work in HR and most people pay anywhere from $300-$800 a month for insurance.

      Just to clarify for everyone else's visibility - medical care and maternity care in Canada is not Free. Yes, you do not get a bill in the mail every time you go see a doctor or go to the hospital - but EVERY SINGLE TAX PAYER pays an enormous amount of their taxes towards this "free" system - and in fact more then 50% of collected taxes goes to healthcare. So, you are paying for these benefits, as is everyone else, since the day you decided to work until you die - it just happens to be spaced out and pooled so it doesn't impact your decision to receive care when you need it.

    27 weeks pregnant here in Boston. Our 'discounted'' daycare cost through work is $2575/month... I have colleagues with 3 kids in daycare who make good money but still use 100% of one spouse's income for the year just on daycare.
    And I've recently realized, I'm due in October and a colleague of mine is due 2 months earlier in August. She will save about $20k in daycare costs over us because her kid is just before the school year cutoff. It's just insane.
    My husband and I are so very lucky we can choose to have kids knowing we can afford it. I have friends with 1 kid who want a 2nd but don't because they can't afford the daycare expense.

Delivery will be free, execept if I’ll ask for separate room, this should cost abou 20€/day :D also we can chose 12 months child care holidays with 80% salary compensation, or 24 months child care holidays with first year - 70 % salary compensation and second year - 40% compesation. I'm in Ontario, Canada... I haven't had children yet (going through fertility treatments), but delivery and OB appointments and all of that will cost me $0. The fertility treatments, though, are $$$. We're also entitled to Maternity/Pregnancy leave of up to 15 weeks, and can get paid benefits of up to 55% of our income. And afterwards we are entitled to Parental Leave, which can be 40 weeks with 35 weeks paid at 55%, OR up to 69 weeks with 61 weeks paid at 33%. And some employers will top up your pay for a little while, as well, which is nice.

Now I'm 18 weeks preggo and will give birth in Toronto, Canada in November. Luckily, I have insurance to shoulder all the medical costs that deal with this pregnancy (prenatal care, laboratory, delivery etc.) If you have no OHIP or insurance: a vaginal birth costs around $8,000 CAD, while a c-section birth would cost around $12,000 CAD

    With my university of california insurance I was quoted at ~1500 total for all appointments and delivery (depending on how many ultrasounds), that's in-network. If I could go to the student health center it would be cheaper. But I'm graduating this quarter so with my husband's insurance we have a $3k deductible 😑

    So serious question could you just save the left over diapers if you are planning on having multiple children? Like in some ziplock bags or something? I saved a crap ton of money buying all my big baby spending items off Facebook market place and cregs list, buying diapers only with coupons or from the discount stores, i think ive spent probably $350 max and we have a really good base without having to rely on people buying from my registry, my husband's family spent alot of money on my SIL pregnancy and I dont think people will have the money to spend on my baby so I'm trying to get things as I go

    Healthcare in the US is a joke. We claim to care about good old fashioned family values yet we still don’t have any paid maternity or paternity leave and new moms can walk out of the hospital in debt just for delivering a baby. It’s a system that adds to the cyclical problem of young, single moms having no support and then not being able to help their children avoid the same fate.

    It blows my mind how much this varies. My daughter turned 1 in May and we spent probably about $1000 for the entire year. If you’re a SAHM, breastfeed for the whole first year, buy used clothes and deal hunt it can be cheap. Obviously I know this isn’t an option for everyone but for people watching this freaking out it isn’t always this much. My delivery was free thankfully since my husband is in the military.

    • @jbean9657
      @jbean9657 4 года назад +4

      Right. I was thinking this. Consignment. Little baby clothes and toys almost or really brand new for 50-90% off.... you just have to start looking early. Buy diapers when they are on sale. Breast feed if able. Pump free with insurance... don't pick the most expensive of something you'll use 3 months to a year, etc. You dont actually NEED most of what Americans are lead to believe. Staying home isn't an option for me so daycare is horrific, but otherwise, I'm not spending this much on TWINS.

      @maryjaynebarber1774 4 года назад

    I had my daughter in Switzerland. Everything was free for me. I stayed in the hospital for 7 days. I'm from the US and none of my family couldnt make it to Switzerland. My husband didnt get any time off of work to help me. Since this was the case they kept me until they could find an agency to help me cook, clean, and grocery shop. The person that did this for me was free. I also got a midwife that came out to my house once a week after I came home for free. The midwife came for 6 months. After the 6 months once a week I went to a clinic that checked my daughter's weight and height. This is free for the first 5 years. I'm seriously thinking about having my 2nd child in Switzerland. The only downside is itll be difficult to get my child their US citizenship. It took me 9 months to get my daughter's citizenship.
    *Edit the a lot of hospitals in Switzerland does not have private rooms. In my 7 day stay 5.5 days I had no roommate. I say 5.5 because a person came in my room for only 1/2 a day. We didn't get along. She was Italian and had her Italian family there. They were extremely loud and didn't think that there was another person in the room.

    Honestly, people buy a lot of unnecessary things or buy things for the simple fact of “its cute”. I watch a lot of minimalist youtube moms & I realized a lot of things weren’t need. Items like Wipes Warmers & Baby shoes- sounds nice but not needed. People buy changing tables but it’s so much cheaper to just put down a mat on the bed or couch & change them. If baby showers are something that people do, requesting things like diapers & clothes of various sizes cuts into the costs too.

    • @jessicaely2521

    I am from Austria 🇦🇹 (Europe) and have two kids, these are roughly the benefits you get from the government :
    - pregnancy is free (ultrasounds ect.)
    - delivery in a hospital is free (including c-sections ect.)
    - 2 monthly maternity leave before birth (paid)
    - you can choose different maternity leave models but a common one ist staying at home for a year and get around 1000€ per month or around 80% of your last income (up to 2000 € top)
    - and you get around 144€ for the first child per month additionally till it is 24 years old als "family support", but with more kids you get a bit less per child
    It varies, depending what model you choose, number of children ect, but I think it is pretty good.
    But although you have all these benefits, we still have declining birth rates 🤷

    Here in St Lucia, once you’re working. The national insurance pays for your hospital stay. Also you get 6 wks before your expected delivery date and 6 weeks after. They pay 65% of your salary for that period. You also get a maternity grant which is I believe $600.00. Also you don’t get anything from the hospital. You need to purchase all your items.
