    Great comparison. Thank you. I bought a Masterbuilt 1050 and returned it after a few days. Right off the bat the switches were not working properly, leaking gaskets, and grease leaked out the bottom though the rivets holding the drip pan on, which you can see around the 20:30 point in the video. Both problems are easily fixed or modded, but for $800 I shouldn't have to do anything on a new machine except cook. Waiting for the CharGriller to get back in stock.

    After a lot of back and forth between the 2, I went with the Masterbuilt 560 I purchased from Walmart. I added the 4 year covers everything warranty plan for $81.00 and It's plenty big enough, should be able to cook for 15-20 people. I'll be unboxing in a week.

    Great video and comparison! I agree. The Chargriller is best bang for the buck. I really wanted to support Masterbuilt for originating the gravity charcoal idea and the improvements after a year, but It still needs work and more mods to be good (Manifold, vent, hopper, tray...too many "if it had"s). That Chargriller may not be the most sexy, but it hits all the wickets right out of the box; addressing all the customer issues with good solutions...and its available locally at Lowes (not have to be ordered like Masterbuilt)! Thanks for helping make up my mind!

    Dang it Tom! I came to your channel to learn about the camp chef pellet grill, thought I was going to buy it. Then the Master build came up, ok I'll buy that one, oh look the char griller 980 yep that's the one. Thanks for the reviews you do and the different varieties of grills you use. Oh yeah did I mention the Weber Simpsons grill I didn't need untill I saw it on your channel. Thanks.

    Thanks Tom. It was a great review and I’m also feeling same like I wish we can combine both. Which saying that my only hesitation right now is if I need to wait a little more since both grill might come up with improvements or new designs etc. CG is better for low and slow and charcoal chopper is much better, MB is better for air flow control and temperature and also you can expand it with rotisserie… I’m still confused :)

    Always enjoy your videos. The Masterbuilt 800 will be my choice, love Char Griller products, I have an Acorn and have had an offset which was passed onto the son in law. But the clincher is the rotisserie, one of my favourite forms of grilling. So great to hear about the limitations and I'll invest in some of the mods straight out of the box. FYI costs here in New Zealand are quite a bit higher (allow exchange rate and shipping etc.) 560 = $1499, 800 = $2299 1050 = $2499. Somebody is definitely clipping the ticket on the way through.

    Tom - as always, a great video. Two questions about the Char-Griller 980. How many pounds of charcoal (say, regular kingsford) will the hopper hold? Other than emptying the ash catcher, is there any clean up necessary? Thanks!

    Totally agree Tom! I've also decided that even though I can sear on the 980, I have a Char-Griller Acorn that will do that much better with the cast iron grates. Hopefully keeping the high searing heat off of my 980, for the most part, will make it last longer!

    Tom I love your videos I bought the masterbuilt 560 when it was first available. Best grill I have ever owned. I then bought the 1050 Great grill but had an issue with seam on the upper part of the hopper. I solved that problem. Still a great grill love the added cooking area.
    But a month ago I bought the char griller 980. Love the look but it can not maintain temp it constantly rises. set it for 200 and it will go as high as 340. Also if you set it for 500 to reverse sear meat, you can never get it to drop back down. Unfortunately Char Griller support has been impossible to deal with. I have asked them to send out a new control module and they asked for pictures of the flap from the FAN area. I sent them the pictures no response. The flap is not getting hung up or stuck open.
    Personally I love the design and want to keep it but their support has been horrible multiple emails and 5 phone calls a month later and nothing has been resolved. I wonder if anyone else has had this issue.

      Try pushing the hopper insert all the way to the left toward the grill. It has some play and that resolved others same issue. The flap getting caught would be the other possibility but it sounds like you checked that.

    Great comparison. I seriously considered the MB but whenever anyone talks about them "mods" are always in the same sentence. You shouldn't need to mod a well engineered product for it to function to it's potential. Mods should be a "want to" item to add features to a less expensive product so it's on par with something at a higher price point. When you factor the cost of mods into the MB the 980 represents even that much more of a value. For that reason I purchased the 980 and I am very impressed with it. However, the wifi on the controller needs work which will hopefully be addressed with a firmware update. Mine holds temps very well throughout the cook. Some of the temp variance is actually part of the algorithm in the controller to approximate the temp in the center of the grates since the probe is set at the furthest point away from the fire box. The big miss for me on the 980 is the lack of a rotisserie. Nothing renders all the fat out of duck skin quite like a rotisserie. Overall the 980 produces impressive smoke flavor and bbq with pretty even heat across the entire cooking surface. At $600 for 200+lbs of metal with digital control and well thought out design it represents a pretty compelling value. I would have no hesitation recommending a 980 to friends and family after getting to know mine.

    Love the series Tom! Question when you added the high temp felt, do you line it up with the rubber seal so it presses up against it, or do you add the felt on the inside area of the seal of the seal? (Closer to the center of the hopper)

    Tom, I agree with your assessments, you did very good in comparing. I do think the Masterbuilt folding grates are very nice features and would be easy to adjust once a person practices with them. Masterbuilt's bottom cast iron cooking surface should be capable of smoking without overheating, which maybe it will be once you try it out. I understand the Masterbuild can smoke at lower temperatures (~150-160 F) which would be best for slow smoking Fish (Salmon, etc.) there features are key for me. I do really like the engineering they did on the Char-Griller, and how the heat box and grease drain appears to be better too and I agree the risk of grease fire is greater in the Masterbuilt's belly design. I like the fire protection features in Char-Griller especially the firebricks (Char-Griller) vs fire-foam (Masterbuilt). I do like the 'Breadbox" design (Masterbuilt) vs the 'Drum Design' (Char-Griller), though I did see feedback in other videos that the Char-Griller leaks greases in many seams/seals vs the Masterbuilt which having a drum design may allow condensation to roll down and into the better design drain trough. Just some thoughts I had. I still am trying to decide which model I will be buying, but thanks for taking the time assessing both! Cheers!

    Good comparison. I was looking at both of those gravity grill / smokers but decided to get a weber smoky mountain 22.5 inch. I think those smokers are not quite perfected yet as to how the temps are controlled, and how the gravity of the harpers are working. They seem like over sized pellet grills. So i went with something tried and true. Added a Tel-Tru thermometer, Flame Boss port, replaced the aluminum door, added wheels on the legs, and mounted a dome hinge. Turned out pretty great.

    Thoughts on smoke flavor when wood is sitting on coals vs. these fan-blown smoke options? I've had the MB1050 since shortly after is was released last year. For the life of me I cannot get good smoke flavor after many tips, tricks and tactics. My older Broil King Vertical Charcoal Smoker always provides unquestionable and undeniable smoke flavor. With my MB1050 my and many mouths have to question if it's there. So that's what brings me to this video. I am looking into other options. But I'm starting to wonder if there's something fundamentally different in the way wood on coals combusts and imparts flavor in a vertical than hot ash burning wood in these options. I want the deep smoke flavor of my vertical with all the conveniences of my 1050 and without having to spend Myron Mixon prices. Your thoughts on the flavor profile between these two?

    • @TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ
      @TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ  2 года назад +3

      Thanks for watching! Smoke profile is always a hard one to answer since everyone has a different thought on it. I’ve found that on my gravity MB or CG that wood chunks in the charcoal gives a better smoke profile as opposed in the ash bin. Using lump may also make difference for you with wood chunks. I’ve always gotten better results with lump as opposed to briquettes. Hope this helps!

    I killed two chargriller 980's before switching to the MB1050. I've had the masterbuilt for a little over a month now, and I like it leaps and bounds more than the chargriller. It lights easier, heats up faster, and leaks less. My problem with the Chargrillers is that it kept killing the bottom of the charcoal chute. My last one got to where it wouldn't heat above 300 degrees no matter how high you set it. I had that one less than a year. I do use them a lot, multiple times per week.. So far I have zero complaints with the Masterbuilt.

    Great video. I am happy with my year+ old MB 560, but I am hoping by the time I am ready for a new gravity feed some company will take the best parts of both the Char Griller and MB and create a great grill. I think MB might have to drop the price on the 1050 to compete with the CG.

    Can you comment on how clean the smoke is by placing wood chunks in the ash pan?
    When you put wood chunks in the charcoal hopper, does it start to make smoke while still in the hopper or does it drop to the ash pan prior to making smoke? If it smokes while in the hopper, how does the smoke compare to wood in the ash pan?

    • @TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ
      @TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for Watching Jeff! I usually don’t do chunks in the ash pan I usually mix them in the charcoal. The is smoke is no different than using the snake method with some wood chunks on the Weber kettle.

    Tom, I am interested in these gravity feed smokers. You seem steady to recommend the Chargriller. I had a Chargriller pellet smoker and thought it was behind the 8 ball compared to Traeger. Any experience with the Chargriller pellet smoker? Specifically the electronics was the issue. It would let temp go way down and dump tons of pellets skyrocketing temperature. The Traeger I had was more consistent

Since the heat enters on the right then travels across to the left where the sensor is, it will always be hotter on the right. It seems to take about an hour running to equalize temp across the whole grill but after that it is solid +/- 5°.

    Liked your review. Just a side note: you were saying "Char-Griller" several times when you were talking about the "Masterbuilt" but if you were following along one knew what you meant. I have the Char-Griller grand Champ XD which I love. The 980 is interesting to me and I may buy one to replace an older cheap char-Griller gas grill I have. I hope they resolve the temp control soon though. My question is how do they do in windy or colder conditions? I live on an island on the coast of Maine and 15-15 mph sea breezes in the summer are almost every day by the afternoon time. Winter gets cold too. (My gas grill will work all year though it takes a bit longer in cold weather.) Can these two work successfully in the cold seasons?

    Char Griller told me the temp probe readings are off due to the controller logic. Apparently it is estimating the temp at the center of the grill and because the probe is off the the side the algorithm has a temp offset. I usually give my 980 about 20 minutes to warm up evenly and haven't noticed any problems with temp being high or low.
    BTW great videos. You helped me pick the 980 over the masterbuilt grills.

    • @shumardi1

      You wouldn’t really measure the manifold temps. You would just simply notice what happens as the fat drips down.

    • @TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ
      @TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ  3 года назад

      The fat drips off the manifold at lower temps with some of it staying on it as well. Since there is no lip to divert some of it makes it inside the manifold while the rest drips into the tray below. At higher temps the grease burns

    I am impressed by the CG removable hopper, except that once the grate disintegrates (and it will) you will have to replace the entire hopper which is bound to be pricey. I like the heavy duty, double manifold design of the Cg (impressive!). I also like the actual bricks in the CG vs the fireproof material in the MB. I don’t understand why CG places the fan on the right instead of the left side of the hopper. It’s a sore thumb. I’ve also seen another vid that demonstrates the legs on the CG are wobbly compared to the MB. This said, I still lean toward the MB - why? Griddle, rotisserie, pizza oven, and mods. If you get the manifold mod for the MB, you can place water trays between the grate and the manifold for proper smoking. I would never smoke without placing a water tray bn the meat and the heat source! I agree with everyone that a mfr needs to take the best of both, solve their pesky issues, and sell. Pit Boss are you watching these vids and reading the comments? Does anyone make mods for the CG?
    PS - how long is the temp probe. Sadly, your temp probe is no longer on Amazon.
    PPS - I also prefer the Longhorn orange vs the Aggie maroon cover.

    As a machinist and Engineer I can tell you most definitely the quality is better on the chargriller. The one thing I’ve heard from an fellow employee is that his masterbuilt wiring has melted from the heat when he grills at 700 degrees. And I would think when paying this much money why should people be doing Modifications to a grill when this should have been addressed before getting out in the field.
