man that is cool! sorry bout the rod that is a bummer. As soon as you mentioned it wasn’t running and you didn’t know what it was or maybe a stingray or a big ugly, I immmediately guessed alligator gar. hahaha and I guessed right! But only because I, too, recently caught one just a little bit shorter in length off a pier close to Galveston causeway railroad bridge. Caught it on a croaker and poppin cork on a light action rod and 12 pound line!!! Which was crazy and seemed impossible to me. Thought it was a big bullred at first. Got it all the way to the pier before it finally snapped the line. Didn’t break it off with teeth, just the line finally gave out. Anyways, great video! Those are fun to catch! And again sorry ‘bout the rod I’d be bummed about it too.
Brother I caught one about that size 10 years or so ago not far from where you are at and it did the same thing to me. I didn't lose my rod but they are super strong.
The deep hole. I've caught lots of fish there including a lot of sting rays. Never seen a gar there though. I was fishing below lake livingston dam and one of the guys with me had his rod propped up at the back of the boat. He got a strike and I believe his rod flew fifty feet before it even hit the water. I always assumed it was a large gar.
@@GFWA I remember back around fifty years ago I was bank fishing a galveston back bay near hitchcock and a guy was fishing nearby. He hooked about a 30lb gar, handed the rod to his young son and said here boy you reel him in. The kid had a blast. Years later I was below the livingston dam and got hung up on bottom. Couldn't get loose and was using a stiff boat rod and thirty pound test. Decided to break the line. I pulled upwards as hard as I could and line came loose. Reeled it in and imbedded on the point of the hook was a silver dollar sized scale. I assume I had foul hooked a several hundred pound gar and couldn't budge it off the bottom.
I’ve lost a rod and reel setup to fish like that before. It’s sucks but at least you had another setup to fish with that day. Tight lines! 🎣🎣🎣

They are! I didn't think I would ever catch one out there, very unexpected!
