Awesome video with tons of useful information. If the deceased was in the military or a first responder I think a emblem of their service in pewter embedded in the urn would be awesome. Keep up the great work. 👽

I make pet urns mostly off of my lathe I find it to be more personal. I use my CNC to make the recessed lid as an example my dog (Raven) I made a lab with wings on the CNC and put it in a recessed in the lid

Pewter is a fairly popular material to work with UK woodturners, make sure to check out how they use it. And I've done a decent amount of it with my woodturning. I usually cast the pewter directly into the piece instead of inlaying it afterwards. It can be very tricky to get it done cleanly, without gaps, flaws, and without staining the wood when sanding/finishing.

Great way to start learning wit pewter from second hand stores. Better pewter from suppliers can be used after getting the hang of it.

Hi Hamilton. I really liked this video. Your passion was front and center and I became more interested as a result. My son works with soft metals (aluminum, brass, copper, zinc) but hasn't done anything with pewter. I'll be on the lookout for it now! The most obvious integration for me is an emblem engraved with a thoughtful phrase or the name of the deceased, joined with the side or top of the urn. Enjoying your creative passion!

Reminds me of a art project I did at university where a friend poured molten pewter into water. you get some very cool organic shapes as it cools quickly, I think my friend made little legs for candle holders. Perry cool, give it a go sometime!

Very interesting... I'm making some plaques soon, this would be great to integrate in that! Thank for the idea

Never thought about using pewter. I've messed with aluminum a little. I have a ton of little flea markets and resell shops close to me. I might try to find some and mess around.

In the fused glass world, ashes from cremations can be fused into the glass. So maybe a round glass token slotted in the front of the urn might be another way. But that would mean you'd have to buy a kiln 😉 and glass 🤔 then you get hooked and no turning back 😂

@HamiltonDilbeck, I like the variety of subjects that you are bringing into your videos. Of course I love the project videos of last year, but these are awesome as well.
Enjoy the kiddos while they last. They grow too fast you won't even realize it.

i wonder if high temperature grill paint on your MDF would hold up to the heat and provide a better surface finish. you could also make plaster of paris molds as they are cheap and easy. i have played around with 3d printing PLA plastic, making a plaster of paris mold and then burning out the PLA and then casting aluminum. if it holds up to aluminum casting i would expect pewter wouldnt be a problem

casting sand is probably the way to go. It is reusable, you can carve positives in another material like hdpe then use them to create the negative in the sand, both would be reusable. Takes a little time to get the knack for doing but would probably be worthwhile.

You should use the MDF to make a sand mold blank.

I would think pouring a large blank of plaster and then machining the shapes into that would yield the best results for pewter. (put since I've never worked with either, who knows)

That moret pattern on that mixed metal. Beautiful. Is it strong enough to go through cnc?

Very interesting...never even knew about this. Was just thinking...is there a high heat paint for engines or something that you can use to seal the MDF and provide a barrier for a cleaner finish? I heard you say roughly 450 for a melting point, but I'm not sure where the temp really is when you are pouring it in. Might be something to test though!
