3:55 I theorize that Shanks knew that the gum-gum fruit wasn’t actually a gum-gum fruit, but in fact, a zoan devil fruit, model: Nika. The same one Joyboy consumed during the void century, which is why it was so important to the world government to get their hands on it. Since Luffy ate the fruit, it was already too late, and Shanks had to lead him onto a path that would shape him into becoming the warrior of liberation. Luffy wouldn’t achieve his full power or achieve the things he did if he was a marine, or liberate kingdoms and unite people across the world, he needed freedom. It’s possible that the fruit wasn’t meant for Luffy either, but perhaps for the son of the king of the pirates instead. But fate often has a sense of humor. Perhaps Luffy’s ultimate dream goes beyond becoming king of the pirates. But rather, he needs to become the king of the pirates to achieve his ultimate dream. Now what dream exactly? We shall find out someday.

Despite how much I love this theory I honestly highly doubt Shanks gave a shit about Ace, or planned to get the fruit for him out of any attachment for Roger. Hell not even Rayleigh did anything to help Ace. It actually wouldn’t surprise me if we learn later that the fruit had a will of its own and actually guided Shanks to its user, like totally manipulated everyone, cause like we saw the way Shanks reacted to Uta seeing the fruit in Red though that might not be canon, for him to purposefully leave such a seemingly important fruit to him unsupervised especially by a kid that will eat everything, well it suggests that Shanks either planned for Luffy to be the one to eat it, or that the fruit (world) purposefully distracted him cause it’d already chosen its user.
Maybe it’s cause I’m biased towards Luffy, but I’ve honestly never liked the theory that the fruit was meant to be for Ace, because Ace is literally nothing like the supposed Joyboy, he cares way to much about the world. I understand that people like to take Roger’s words to Garp into context but obviously a father as adventurous as Roger is going to hope his son is someone special and great (which Ace is but honestly not as much as Luffy. Like bloody hell Luffy resembled Roger more than Ace this was proven time and time again by various people who’ve met Roger).
I love Ace, but a huge part of his character is that he’s shackled by his beliefs, as much as he tries to be free he’s the one chaining himself do his need to prove he deserves to live. Luffy is literally like the embodiment of freedom compared to Ace not to mention Sabo. His older brothers chain themselves with the responsibility of the world and aren’t truly living for themselves as compared to Luffy who isnt chaining himself to anything besides being free, his entire goal is just to enjoy his life to the most and he just so happens to keep saving people, I don’t know how you can get more free than that.
