6:05 you missed the left turn that gets you to Waller Park, one of the best public spaces I've ever seen. It was supposed to be a zoo but when that failed, it became a massive public park with areas of wilderness, winding paths, ponds, and huge grassy expanses. There's no better place to have a picnic.
Many southerners from Oklahoma and Texas Settled large parts of the outskirts of Southern California and the central cost from Santa Maria South. They were joined by Midwesterners and plenty of Italians, Irish Portuguese and especially lots of Mexicans!

Interesting to hear somebody who’s not from Santa Maria talk about it. Sant maria is where Tri tip bbq originated. I lived in that town for 22 years. It used to be a great place to live. Now it's full of crime in all parts of town. Lots of problems. The cost of living has sky rocketed. Many people there struggle to make ends meet. Some of the other cities on the central coast are nice but they are extremely expensive.. Santa maria doesn't really have much to offer. And there's not much to do there anymore. It's really sad how it has become. I finally left 3 years ago and moved to Oregon. Best decision I made. I love it here.
How can a regular guy from the Midwest like myself move to California? Jose do you have any recommendations on how regular people can make the move there? It seems like the American dream… I don’t want to move to Florida anymore
I live about 42 miles north of Santa Maria in San Luis Obispo County. I travel to Santa Maria almost every weekend. I love it there and most of my friends live there too. There is plenty of shopping down Broadway, the main street that you guys are driving on, and on weekends, people go cruising all up and down Broadway with their flashy cars. Then there's the food. Lots of different styles to enjoy. I wish I could live there so that I can visit my friends more often but housing is a bit too pricey for me.
Santa Maria, California!?!? There's NOTHING to do here, no good restaurants, no entertainment, no shopping, no diversity... If you're from a big city, you will die of boredom!
I’m 5th generation Santa Marian born and raised. I moved my family out of there due to poor schools, high crime, drugs, homelessness, gangs and incompetent government. We left the state for North Dakota, people are friendly, I don’t have to lock my doors at night, better schools. I’ll always love Santa Maria, but it is trending in the wrong direction, compared to L.A. or SF it appears calm and peaceful, but it’s really declining over the decades. It’s less diverse too, it’s mostly Hispanic, back in the day there was a more diverse mix of Portuguese, Swiss-Italian, Okie, Filipino, Japanese and Mexican… a lot of people can’t communicate with each other due to only speaking Spanish or English, a lot of people on welfare. It’s lost it’s former glory forever I’m afraid.

Santa Maria was incorporated in 1905, and the town was rich in history, WAS, I say that for a reason. The town changed in the mid 60s, when the merchants/the city council decided they wanted a mall to compete with LA, they tore down all historic buildings EXCEPT for Haslems, Bill's takeout, Casa Manana, part of the original haunted SM Inn, which I used to play in back in the late 60s, the Church on cook/bdwy. They also moved the 101 out of the center of town. The gangs came up from LA, due to Lompoc Penitentiary, causing a Massacre at Peppertree plaza in 1973/74. This used to be such a beautiful place and now it's run down. It's not an All American City in my book, that status left almost 60 years ago. Oh, and it's more like 85 percent Hispanic in town. Very little of the pioneering families live there, if any would be in Orcutt. I hated when newcomers would pronounce the town with a Hispanic accent, it originally was Central City but they changed it due to mail problems with Colorado's Central City. They destroyed it, instead of preserved it. The beautiful art deco buildings, and SM theater was famous, that was torn down in 88, I'm still sick over that 😢. BTW, my family came before the incorporation, their turning in their graves as we speak. The beaches I grew up going to is not accessible due to a thing called "private beach" environmentalist...who even hate the sand cause it's messy in their carports, THEN MOVE FROM THE BEACH, problem solved. The only ones who can live in SM are the ones who inherited the pioneers home, and are selling those properties NOW, due to gangs, drugs, and murders...and the diversity you speak of...who are the gangs, illegals, etc. I have friends who are Hispanic, born there and their families for generations...they are disappointed too and moved to the next county SLO...it's so bad there even the popo won't live there, let alone have their headquarters there.
