GMC for the win in my book. It's a better value (initially) looks better, more powerful amd I'd be willing to bet their reliability isn't going to be as good with this generation of Tacoma. I also like how the screen in the Canyon looks like its more integrated and the Tacoma looks like they glued an ipad to the dash.
My local dealer is offering a lifetime power train warranty with the new canyons. That and $6k lower in price made the decision pretty easy. That doesn’t even take into account the much better interior with far better materials with the canyon. The taco is all plastic with a very uncomfortable arm rest on the door sill…
Agree, in the past , Tacoma could be considered more reliable , because of the use of older , more proven technology, overbuilt drivetrains, great build quality . I knew 4th gen won't be good based on Tundra that is literally falling apart, from rattling interior , broken plastics after few months of use ,to failing engines. With the new gen , i don't even know why would anyone buy the more expensive Taco. It doesn't make sense for short term, because you can get more features/comfort from other brands, like GMC, but it also doesn't make sense for long term , because this engine won't last 300~400K miles as previous gen could. If I was buying now, i would get 4runner or 3rd gen Tacoma
@nikotal.4282 the new Tacoma uses the same engine from the highlander and that has proven to be very reliable. I follow the tundra crowd. You're adding every single problem the owner has into one where every owner has. Don't exaggerate
@@nikotal.4282 Not entirely sure where you're getting your information on the Tundra. They had a few early issues with turbos that were resolved when they switched suppliers. The earliest models also have interior issues. But it's far from a truck that is "plagued with issues" or "falling apart."

I saw it come in on the website, called they assured me that wasn't mine, come to find out the order number was the same. They sold it from under me during labor day. I have a 2007 Camry Hybrid with 287k miles. No issues until recently with AC compressor and front end vibration. It’s never needed any major repairs and has cost me fuel, tires, brakes, a tie rod, couple windshields, new exhaust being it was in Ohio salt roads for 11 years. I bought it with 64k in 2010 or 11. 2011 Highlander has over 270k miles. Cost me tires, brakes, fuel, a new horn recently. No Chevy, Ford, Dodge ever lasted me that long or have been that maintenance free. GMC is nice but the Toyotas have been my go to. My next truck needs to be 0 to minimal maintenance for 15-20 years. The Canyon is a sharp truck and I like it though. No disrespect to the GMC folks.
The Canyon has a better looking interior. I feel like the only thing going for the Toyota is that people know they are reliable. Hopefully they continue to be reliable.
That ledge on the window sill for the Tacoma is fantastic. I have it in my Tundra. It's really a feature I like the best. The GMC doesn't have that. Nor do many other vehicles.
Ben, great video as usual. Exactly the type of comparisons that I would like to see. As always, thanks for giving payload specs. Speaking of payload, I find the Tacoma’s payload underwhelming. I am not the least bit brand loyal. However, I value reliability. Never been impressed with the GM midsize twins when it comes to reliability. I have purchased Honda, Mazda, Kia, Subaru, and Toyota vehicles brand new. Never owned a contemporary pickup. I want a pickup to tow our small camper. We haul camping gear as well, so payload is important. I am impressed with both trucks inside and out. I appreciate the option of a 6’ bed with the Tacoma. However, I have to admit that I am completely impressed with the form and function of the Canyon. I would probably spec a 4WD Canyon Elevation rather than the AT4 to save some money. Yes, I am very price conscious as well. I can’t believe I am typing this, but I prefer the Canyon with the exception of no 6’ bed. And, is it reliable? Very important question for me.
I heard people say that modern mid-sized trucks are the same size as old full-sized trucks. The 1980s Chev full-sized "square body" weight was around 4000 lbs. Every year car manufacturers make the mid-sized trucks wider and taller and now they are putting a smaller engine in them and the trucks are too heavy for the turbocharged 4-cylinder. In Australia they get a Ford Ranger with a 6-cylinder diesel engine that gets 28 MPG. John at LHT Performance put the V8 and 6-speed automatic transmission from a 2020 Silverado into a 2020 Colorado and gets 28-30 MPG on the highway. ruclips.net/user/shortsltQhLyngeAM?si=e3gm0Ke33TsoGJEl
I'm gonna stick with my new Colorado Trail Boss until it craps out (could be tomorrow, but solid so far) and then I'll probably aim for a Taco with the iForce-Max powertrain for better efficiency. If GM releases a hybrid Colorado/Canyon, I'd be inclined to stick with GM, honestly. Nice truck so far! The 4-pinger is super-torquey and proper quick for a truck!
I bought a Tacoma 24 TRD off road prem in April 24. I put 12k miles on it but I’ve since traded in this Sept 24. My transmission was slipping and I felt the truck was too old manish for me. I now drive an AT4x GMC Canyon. I’m NOT saying one is better than the other but the Tacoma was not fitting my preferences.
I don’t plan on getting a new vehicle until 2025 but I’m in love with the appearance of the canyon 2023/24 versions and hopefully used ones will be cheaper come a year or so from now.
I appreciate the video - though, comparing the GMC and Toyota outside the GMC dealership with a shout-out to them is a bit conflicted haha. But overall, good comparisons. Thanks.
I bought a 23 Colorado Trail Boss as a bridge truck to a new Tacoma off road. I just don't like what I see so I told dealer to move my deposit on the Tacoma to a Land Cruiser as the Colorado seems like a superior truck for my needs.
I'd love to see the iforce max Tacoma vs the canyon and see which engine is better. I also have to say the limited model of tacoma looks by far the worst of all the models. Trd pro>TH>sport>off road>prerunner>sr5>limited in order of looks imo. You'd have to redo this comparison with something that is actually similar to this trim of canyon.
I’ve been a die hard Tacoma fan my whole life so this is hard for me because I’m looking into a new vehicle, the canyon has more room in the back more power more towing power and in my opinion looks better, especially in the Denali trim
NGL, Toyota got a bloody nose in that comparison. If you minus out trust and resale value ( both really unknown), the Canyon owns that Taco. Too bad GM eliminated the 6' bed option.
The GMC AT4 will give you more options for less money and a hundred pounds more torque and a more comfortable ride. The interior in my opinion is a step up from the tacoma. The engine in the GMC is proven, it has been used for years in the silverado. There both good trucks. Personally it's GMC for me
In any other year I'd take the Tacoma. Not in 2024. The Canyon would be my choice with Toyota being in year one of the new gen. GMs 2.7 turbo has been around a little longer also.
Forgot to mention I just saw the TFL video of the GM trail boss pulling the blown up Toyota off the trail. Front diff or something just broke. Looks like Toyota might have dropped the ball on this truck.
I like seeing a comparison between these two trucks, but it’s hard to really compare the two trims because they are different. The limited is the top trim (right now) and is focused on comfort and road driving. The AT4 is more light off roading and is the middle trim and $1000 less…than the top trim of the taco. I know it’s hard to get the correct trims to compare fairly right now, just wanted to point that out to people lol. If you want to make it a fair comparison, it would be the canyon Denali vs the limited Tacoma. The Denali is about $5-6,000 more than the limited is.
I have a canyon on order - the Taco was impossible to even see and of the 2 stealers I spoke to both said dealer adjustments were likely (no thank you) because it was a "hot model" with lots of demand.. I love Taco reliability - had a 2014 BUT - they usually mess up the 1st model year - they did in the Gen 3 at least. Would like to wait a year and see how Toyota shakes out without the V6. The Canyon engine / drive train has been out 5years so bugs are known. Electrical gremlins exist in the GMC and some of them have weird issues - however - mostly known. The Taco is all new to everyone. My local Toyota dealer is am hour away, GMC is 20 mins. Likely the AT4 Canyon is where I'll land
I think the Limited is the only Tacoma that DOES have the AUTO 4x4. All of the Canyons have it. Maybe not in that preproduction truck? I know because it's the only reason I would consider the limited (don't like all the chrome).
Chevy looks good but as you said... in the long run which will last longer and be more reliable...Lets say they would just each have absolutely equal reliability then Canyon.. but i dont know if they do..
You are stuck with a tiny 5 foot bed and crew cab only in the GM twins but the tacoma you can still get a work truck with an extracab 6 foot bed. Why you wonder? GM has abandoned that entire customer base
Yeah….. Because GM doesn’t like selling trucks. If their “customer base” was pining for the less practical 2 door trucks, that’s what they’d be making B1tch about it all you want, the market says this is what sells
Last year I bought a 2016 Canyon 2wd, extended cab, long box, with a manual transmission because I HATE the new GM trucks. I bought a 2016 because I don't want cylinder deactivation, traction control, auto stop/start, lane depare warning, automatic collision avoidance, over the air updates or any other high tech junk they put in modern trucks. This technology will not make driving safer but instead allows car manufacturers to keep their hands in your pockets, charging you for features that used to be free. Once everyone forgets how to use a steering wheel to stay in their lane and how to use the brake pedal to avoid crashing into the vehicle in front of you then they can charge even more for this useless tech.
@@lordrayden3045 If you need technology to stay in your lane or to prevent you from crashing into the car in front of you or to keep you from running over pedestrians then you shouldn't have a license. Paying attention to the road and your surroundings makes driving safer, not technology for lazy/distracted drivers.
I would like to see the ATX4 compared to the TRD Pro Tacoma. I think I like the GMC more but I am yet to see the Tacoma in the flesh. Dealers around here are saying May or June. Crazy.
Really good comparison between the Canyon and Toyota, thanks. I ordered a 2024 Canyon Denali a month ago from my local dealer and was told it would be a few months before the factory would deliver the truck to the dealership. I can not find one at any dealership in California? They show 2023 Canyons advertised as new? Is GM trying to sell off old stock before ordering New 2024 Canyons? Thanks
The Canyon is impressive, but I’ll take the Tacoma all day, evert day. I’m surprised that it felt a little sluggish - less torque - but all other things considered, I’d take the Taco.
I had a 17 Tacoma Off Road after driven 127k miles, drive side of the engine started knocking so i traded with another 22 Tacoma Sr5 and only under 30k miles i noticed the engine knocking, consist vibrations. Toyota not so reliable as its used to be in my experience so now i drive 23 Canyon ATV so far only got 7k miles on it with no issue at least not Yet
It's AWD! It can be switched to 4WD high and low. When you compare vehicles, they have to be comparable. The Toyota Tacoma Limited is comparable to the Canyon Denalli. Not an AT4!

Nice comparison. I'm a big Toyota fan but the new taco isn't the old taco and they really changed up their formula. I don't think it will have the same reliability as the previous gen at least for the first few years. It will need a track record to reprove itself as being reliable. The GMC is just a a knock out. Not a huge fan of a turbo 4 but it sounds like it has plenty of pep. It would have been nice to see a power rear slider in the GMC. I want to go test drive an AT4

Very good video. One question. You who were fortunate enough to drive both trucks, which one has the best camera and better visibility?
Trail Boss for me. These new Tacos are an imitation of themselves.
I test drove the Canyon and it was great. May test a different one this weekend and decide
It doesn't make sense. The mid-size trucks don't seem to get any better gas mileage than the full-size trucks.
That’s what k was going to say
They got,rod of the V6, and lost gas mileage
They're both around 4500 lb and aero similar to a giant brick - that's why.
Everyone always compares the luxury models. Compare the one right above base model lol
I have a 2017 Canyon with 2.8 diesel and not up to either of these. I get 32-24 mpg
I appreciate the video - though, comparing the GMC and Toyota outside the GMC dealership with a shout-out to them is a bit conflicted haha. But overall, good comparisons. Thanks.
I'll take the General
The bumper step is an option on the Tacoma. Also, does the Tacoma have power folding side mirrors? Thanks.
Exterior - Canyon / Interior - Tacoma / Powertrain - Canyon
And the V6
As for the configuration, this has to be what the numbers say sellls
Toyota wins on projected resale and reliability. GMC wins everywhere else.
The GMC AT4 will give you more options for less money and a hundred pounds more torque and a more comfortable ride. The interior in my opinion is a step up from the tacoma.
The engine in the GMC is proven, it has been used for years in the silverado. There both good trucks. Personally it's GMC for me
Just for the reliability I would take the Tacoma.
It's a new generation. We don't know how reliable it is.
Toyota living on past reputation
Great video, thanks you for the demonstration.
Have a 2024 Canyon on order. Hope it shows by the end of the year.
The Canyon engine sound is better and nicer interior
Canyon for me too also the engine bay of the tacoma looks like a teenager room
I think the Limited is the only Tacoma that DOES have the AUTO 4x4. All of the Canyons have it. Maybe not in that preproduction truck? I know because it's the only reason I would consider the limited (don't like all the chrome).
I was leaning towards getting a Toyota but the GMC canyon has really caught me by surprise I may go for that idk yet.
Just wondering does canyon have adaptive cruise control? I love Toyota, but canyon has a nicer look overall. I’d vote canyon.
I'd buy neither of these overpiced vehicles.
Chevy looks good but as you said... in the long run which will last longer and be more reliable...Lets say they would just each have absolutely equal reliability then Canyon.. but i dont know if they do..
How difficult would it be to get an extra 4 inches of leg room in the back seat
It depend what you really want reliability or a good and beautiful truck
Good and beautiful
For the price, both…
wont be ford anyone seen one those piles?
Not a GM fan but that Canyon is sick.
If their “customer base” was pining for the less practical 2 door trucks, that’s what they’d be making
B1tch about it all you want, the market says this is what sells
@@aerynlovell4754
Won’t make it safer?
LOL
Sure
@@lordrayden3045 If you need technology to stay in your lane or to prevent you from crashing into the car in front of you or to keep you from running over pedestrians then you shouldn't have a license. Paying attention to the road and your surroundings makes driving safer, not technology for lazy/distracted drivers.
@@aerynlovell4754
Ok?
And it still makes everyone / everything safer
I love toyota but they are out of their mind with these prices.
loved the last tacoma. i think they went backwards as far as styling with this one.
Give me the Canyon!
Is the Tacoma noticeably louder than the Canyon? More engine noise?
Thanks
At least around here, you can’t walk onto a lot and find a canyon sitting there
Canyon wins in all areas, exterior, power, interior, price and dare I say reliability ( Toyota not where they were with previous generation).
If I’m leasing, I go Canyon if I’m buying, I go Tacoma.
Canyon for me looks better has bigger engine an all the same luxury .
For me, It all comes down to reliability and resale value.
That's a 23 canyon not a 24, the 24's aren't for sale yet
My impressions is that Canyon interior looks and feels more according to the price vs the Tacoma interior
The Canyon is impressive, but I’ll take the Tacoma all day, evert day. I’m surprised that it felt a little sluggish - less torque - but all other things considered, I’d take the Taco.
BIG failed not showing the tailgate storage of the AT4. Also, Limited is a Denali equivalent...not an AT4.
GMC beautiful nice I’ll stick to reliability I don’t want to spend my time at the dealership give it a few months I see issues along the way 🤙🏾
I had a 17 Tacoma Off Road after driven 127k miles, drive side of the engine started knocking so i traded with another 22 Tacoma Sr5 and only under 30k miles i noticed the engine knocking, consist vibrations. Toyota not so reliable as its used to be in my experience so now i drive 23 Canyon ATV so far only got 7k miles on it with no issue at least not Yet
Isn't the Tacoma Limited full-time 4wd? So how could it have auto 4wd?
It's AWD! It can be switched to 4WD high and low. When you compare vehicles, they have to be comparable. The Toyota Tacoma Limited is comparable to the Canyon Denalli. Not an AT4!
I have a 2022 tundra 117k miles on it 2/3 highway still no issues just do your required maintenance every 5k miles my brother 8n law has a zr2 2023 Colorado he goes to the dealership all the time for electrical stuff lol and transmission issues 😂 i know its not apples to apples but when it comes to reliability i would take the toyota all day every day
If the tundra is a V6 then it’s no wonder why it’s been good to you. But this Taco is a turbo 4, not sure it’ll last as long as your tundra.
@brianmola711
Only time will tell lol
Today there is no better mid-sized truck than the Canyon. It's just beautiful.
I want to go test drive an AT4
Turbo charged i4 looks like a nightmare
