I figured out how to network as an introvert. Brené Brown gives good guidance on this, she says show up authentically - don’t puff up and don’t shrink. If I can’t keep a conversation going, I accept that and move on. I just show up as who I am and accept that everyone may not like that, but if I’m kind and authentic then more people tend to like that then not.
I've learned that you always have to manage upward. Don't get things done too quickly (unless it's something urgent,) or they'll think your tasks are easy and that they need to give you more to do.
This enrages me when I work Healthcare. Being good at your job has a different meaning. I do everything that needs to be done for my residents. But I'm not seen as friendly to the families because I'm DOING MY GODDAMNED JOB instead of shooting the shit with them.
6:26 I wholeheartedly agree here! If you're waiting for things to happen to you, it'll be slow going. Gotta be proactive about making your own opportunities and getting people on your side to make it happen.
I told my bosses boss recently in a meeting: “It’s not important what I’m doing, important is the bond I’m having with people and interest people have in what I do.” Reputation over work, but when you start from the bottom, it’s always results coming first. 😉 Great video as always!!!! How do you cultivate those relationships when you're working from home? How do you figure out who is responsible for deciding the promotions and how do you get in touch with them?
i have worked for a couple companies for around 5 years so far and over that time annual raises are in the range of 3-5%. meanwhile market is paying 20% more. so i say just move on unless your boss is a real buddy who will get you market raises without more work, unpaid ot, and higher expectations.

No thanks. We have quotas to meet and it’s timed deadlines. I would rather get the job done than kiss up to someone. If I have to kiss ass to anyone, I’d rather get fired 😂 Fuck my reputation. I’ve been gossiped about since day one. Whatever reputation I had is long gone and if I see myself wasting my time and going nowhere at my job, I can easily quit 🤷♀️ Unfortunately, I’m too stubborn to quit now. Gotta see how everything plays out Just gotta keep convincing myself that my job will get better and I’ll be ok solely using my talents instead of puckering my lips and degrading myself to stroke someone’s ego.
If you're too good where you're at such that they can't lose you, then why not just promote you and keep you where you're at? But nooooo, they need to twist words and ask stupid questions like why promote you when your role hasn't changed, etc. But you're blocking me to try other roles.
After teaching my lead how to improve things he took projects from me and he is now the one doing them, advise: improve things and dont teach others how to improve, specially if is someone in leadership
I am trying hard. Just had a chat with the highest project lead. I am improving my reputation, now I need to get the results. I have been dropped in the deep end of the pool due to unexpected emergency. I am in catch up, but I am going to give it my best. Almost everyone knows me and my talents now, I just have to prove the leadership results now. That is all new to me. I said once I would never do this, now... Here I am.
Hey Jennifer! Thanks for all of your great videos. They are so informative and have been very helpful in my quest to find the right job for me. One thing that I've always struggled with at previous workplaces, is being asked to take on extra work to compensate for worker shortages/poor scheduling or being asked to do extra things that aren't part of my job duties. I just started a new job at a start-up meal prep and catering company. They recently moved to a new warehouse, and after 7 hours of working (with no beak) the packaging team was told that they would need to move and clean up to 200 office chairs that had been left there by the previous occupants of the building. I felt so pissed. I told my supervisor that I needed to get going because I felt that this was rediculous. Should I talk to them about how I felt about being asked to do this? Am I overreacting?
I noticed this in my last job in New Zealand before I left the country in 2017. I worked as a tech assistant for a large New Zealand mobile phone and home broadband those who would take multiple sick days off leave early show up late or simply know buggar all about the job were promoted to other departments. Those who busted their asses were held back to the point they either quit or were fired for the most trivial matters. Before I left I did “quiet quit” I did the bare ass minimal and gave zero fucks tbh funny enough I get an email from my group supervisor saying he’d been impressed with my work and wants me to train up new entrance staff 😂 I was leaving at the end of the month anyway so I took it just to get off the phone and away from my computer screen.

I'm an introvert but I'm not shy, I'm not afraid to talk to people. I just don't enjoy talking for no reason so when I try to have a small talk it feels forced and uncomfortable for everyone. I'm not motivated to get to know my co-workers either because we differ so much, they're really boring to me. Most are football loving, beer drinking Chads and I'm an artistic bookworm. Nothing in common
What if you have a toxic boss that tries to tarnish your reputation and restricts access to opportunities? I love my work for the first time in 17 years, but my boss and I are in the same category for promotion and he is determined to not help me in any way.
I’m in the exactly situation. I love my job by my boss hates me m. Im the top performer in the company. It makes no sense. The best thing to do is not try and collect a paycheck. It’s really tough to find a job I enjoy. I’ll keep my eyes open for something better. But I have no expectations at this point. As long as get paid and get work experience along the way, I’ll jump ship soon as I find something better.
The problem with "organic" networking with someone who has hiring power is that it's fake by definition. If you did not know that this person had hiring power, you probably wouldn't be seeking out a relationship with them at all. You chose to network with them because of your personal agenda to further your career. You can make it look authentic or organic but underneath it all, it's fake because in your everyday life, you probably wouldn't be friends with them at all.
Hi hope you are well today. On my last post I mentioned that my family member has passed. Away and you sent me a lonely reply. Thanks so much for that. Watching your videos helps me. You put so much hard work in. And it's paying off. All. The best for you and yours.
One of my managers wants to play video games with me after work and I'm skeptical about the offer. Is this something I should say yes to or try something else?
LMAO. Cooperate slavery is wild. So the best way to get promoted is to blow your superiors, pretend to be busy , and only perform on tasks that that look important even when they have no company/customer value.........so become a politician. 😂
I disagree. I work hard, remain professional and have strict boundaries with coworkers. I have always been promoted within six months at every job I have ever had since I was 14 years old. Hard work and professional are the key.

This is why gatekeeping is such a problem... It makes one indispensable, even though it's entirely self serving (and I'm not judging that at all)
This is more guided towards private sector jobs and in government is different

learn where ti give 100% where to give less, reputation brand, relationships - networking!
Post Covid how do we do these things remotely? Where it’s almost impossible to build these relationships on a face to face level?
It is because you have let your gossip, and emotions become an extension of them.
