  • PNNL manages the Department of Homeland Security First Responder Group’s Responder Technology Alliance to accelerate the development of and bring to market integrated technology solutions that will significantly improve the safety and capability of first responders. PNNL partnered with Continuum, a global design and innovation consultancy firm, to engage first responders and representatives from technology development firms nationwide. These videos tell the story of the envisioned ideas so that both first responders and potential industry partners can imagine the possibilities. This video highlights firefighting needs for future technologies. nwrtc.pnnl.gov

    I’m a fan of the innovation of this video, this is the kind of stuff that the fire service needs. People commenting “keep firefighting the way it is” NO! That kind of thinking is why 100 firefighters die every year in the US, because there aren’t any new innovations like these.

    We have trouble getting funding for the pure essentials. I cant see a city ever giving us this. This would help save lives, but thats not what cities are interested in.

    • @traildog_adventures
      @traildog_adventures 6 лет назад +5

      Camden Ramsey the NFPA standard for tshirt is stupid anyhow when it comes to structural firefighting. If it's hot enough for a synthetic shirt to melt under my turnout gear I got more problems than the burns from the melting shirt.

      King Dudley technology makes our lives easier. Take traffic lights for example, it's operated by a computer. Small glitch could make a catastrophic accident. Yet we rely on it, when we're driving.

    • @jquint321
      @jquint321 7 лет назад +1

      If you think about it, think about how much your life is heavily influenced by technological innovation. Fire departments around the world already lack with advances in terms of on-scene communication with incident commanders. Having this type of technology brought one at a time to a fire department can be life changing and even time saving when it comes to preventing loss of life within the public. Take, for example, a person who in unconscious in a burning building, wouldn't you want the firefighter to be able to use thermal imaging to detect body signatures so that is easy to save you, compared to the traditional move and search technique. It is the time we move onto developing technology and compatibility within fire departments everywhere, especially in urban cities.

    • @paintballgaming1090
      @paintballgaming1090 7 лет назад +1

      Joseph Jay Quintero That's why there's things called TICs or Thermal Imaging Cameras we have that technology we don't move and search anymore you use a TIC which are now being built into to are Face Mask also implementing too much technology into something is a problem what they do is take what they have been using for years and update it to today what they what to do to the gear in not completely against but no one factors in expense this would cost Departments millions with all this technology is too outlandish and isn't thought through enough

    • @kingdudley5421
      @kingdudley5421 6 лет назад

      Sa Dude I still move and search because a TIC only gives you the topography in temperature of what you're looking at. I've had plenty of TICs randomly die on me which makes me look at them as a tool not a necessity. That being said, I do agree with you.

    Interesting. I would assume that indicating what areas have been searched would also be a thing. The bread crumbing for primary exit was nice. The commander being able to provide additional routes was cool. I'm surprised that the commander didn't once switch to 1st person view.
    Ironically, those fire fighters at the end would be better served if only they could keep their SCBAs on while switching air supply so they didn't have to breath the carcinogens before getting decontaminated.

    Sorry some of this technology will never happen in the fire service like the guy looking at the tablet and the tablet showing a block staircase the only way that can happen is if a firefighter Sees it and tells command and there's no technology that's going to tell you the condition of the building if going to collapse or the condition of the fire unless a firefighter can see it and report it back to command.

    • @thereissomecoolstuff
      @thereissomecoolstuff 4 года назад +2

      New construction has all kinds of sensors and video surveillance. They are suggesting the fire department can plug into the building system for data. They are already doing it...old buildings probably not. New ones definitely.

  • @xr2fan655
    @xr2fan655 6 лет назад +1

    This technology is all well and good. But for departments and fire brigades it comes down to cost. If their budgets are squeezed this stuff will not be bought. There is tech available now and equipment that makes the job easier but is not adopted because of cost. So in the future unless your department has an endless pot of money, this stuff will not see the light of day.

    • @thereissomecoolstuff
      @thereissomecoolstuff 4 года назад +1

      It's very simple you have to federalize the fire department just like the military. The fire service is way to top heavy..think if you got rid of 90% of admin and put ff's back on the rigs. You do that you will have plenty of money for innovation. It's easy...

    Only thing that gets me is the light weight material. It could make it easier for the toxins to get and absorb on your skin that much easier. Take Boston FD for example, right now if I remember in 2016 study (2 years ago I know) Boston had the highest carcinogen cancer rate in the US. You can attribute it to no in house cleaning procedures but it could also be that our gear is getting lighter. Our hood is a perfect example. Our hoods are light weight and more studies shown your neck and face absorb the most. Now I am just a volunteer and paid guys do this for a living but we are all brothers and sisters of the red line and should look out for each other. This video is great but what about the cancer rate associated to our profession
