According to euronews, there are 34 deaths per million in US from firearm, while in UK it is 0.5.
In regards to knife crime, 5 people per million had been killed in US vs 3 per million in UK. So in both cases US wins
I2020 there was 237 murders in England and Wales, In the US it was 19,402 by gun not including suicide

As a Brit I find it so weird that you think it's crazy that we can't even own a hand gun. To me, the idea of me being able to own any gun at all is almost unthinkable.

UK police are definitely there to enforce the law, and tHey do. They just don’t need to be armed most of the time to do it.
Not going to lie was a bit confused on why she thought they were the equivalent of hall monitors. What kind of police anywhere does abelsulty nothing but wag a finger ar you. Just like any police force there are different kinds of jobs that you will do or can move on from. but absolutely every one of them is there to enforce the law. (how efficiently and trustworthy that is is a debate in its self, as I believe every form of body that has power over another will have people who mistreat it where ever you. but that's not the point)
The difference between USA and UK - USA has police FORCE(S) and UK has a police service. Also our police are way better trained, especially in de-escalation so the need for deadly force is far less. Police carry tasers for use when dealing with armed offenders and can always call in properly trained armed police when needed.

Gun crimes are so rare in the UK, that the police have found the same gun used in completely different crimes.
I’m 31 and live in England, I’d never even seen a gun in real life until I saw armed police patrolling the city centre in the wake of the Manchester Arena bombing 4 years ago. American gun laws are absolutely crazy to me!

The irony is they actually just duplicated English Common Law rights we'd had since the 1100s, but we have since chosen to update them to reflect social, political and technological changes. We only really lost the Right to Bear Arms in 1997 when it became a privilege. Did you feel the difference? Nope, me neither.

Actually you can pick up some pretty basic shotguns for about 50 quid. 👍
It's £88 to obtain a shotgun certificate which has to be renewed every 5 years. You can't carry a shotgun in public unless its in a case.
One major difference, is we had one mass shooting in a school in Scotland in the 80s and immediately pretty much banned guns! You guys have mass shootings multiple times per year! Also over hear we don't feel the need to have one for defence and most of us wouldn't want one either
USA doesn't just have mass shootings multiple times per year, there has been 264 mass shootings so far this year and we're only 162 days into 2021. Almost 700 children and teenagers has been shot and killed this year so far.

Even back in the 70s & 80s,living somewhere like in Easter House in Glasgow,wouldn’t have gotten you a license,for a handgun as the police decided if people could have them & could refuse people to own them,if they lived in a high,crime area.

As a nation we just aren’t interested in guns, it’s not part of our mentality. 🥴I’m glad and relieved we have such strict gun laws in Britain. I wouldn’t feel safe knowing people can drive or walk around carrying a gun.😦

You can't use a gun to protect your house in the UK. The gun has to have a specific purpose and can be checked any day by the police. For example my uncle has a gun on his farm which needs to be kept in a locked cabinet and he is the only one who has the key/knows the location of the key. The gun cannot be loaded when stored or when being transported to the place where he is legally allowed to shoot and the ammunition needs to be kept separately from the gun in a locked container. These can be checked at ANY time and his license taken away and massive issues with the law if he doesn't comply with the rules. He also has to declare a gun on property if there is ever an issue where he needs to call the police to the property before they arrive, even if the issue isn't anything to do with the gun. He's restricted in where he can carry the gun as well, he can't just carry it around with him, only from his property to the place where he is allowed to shoot and nowhere else. If the gun is not in the correct storage place, he can't just leave it lying about either.....
It is legal to defend yourself with a firearm but not to own the gun for that purpose. For example if you for example own a farm and have a shotgun for putting down animals or so forth. And someone breaks into your house. If you were to go through due process and they were a threat. Armed with a knife or another gun for example. And you whent through a due process of warning them that you have a firearm and it could kill them. And they still whent to assault you. Then you would get away with it. But if there is dispute weather they posed a threat it is really not a good idea. In any case going to jail for a few years is better than getting stabbed to death.

@@joshj8127 Tony Martin... look up his name. Shot and killed one of two intruders. Long prison sentence. He lived somewhere where it often took police hours to respond. Shotgun used on intruders as they were running from his home (therefore unreasonable force because they were no longer a threat). The intruders had driven a long distance to rob his place on several occasions and the police would not attend because the intruders were traveller's/gypsies/romany's or whatever name you have for them.
If you apply for a Fire Arms Certificate in the UK, self-protection is not a legal reason to get one.

Recheck the list of reasons he said we are allowed a gun here in the UK. Personal protection is not one of them and if you claimed it was for that then the police would reject your application.

This from the 2005 "Guidance on Northern ireland Firearms controls:
64. The Chief Constable considers that generally it is not in the wider interests of public safety for members of the public to have firearms for personal protection. However, in the prevailing circumstances in Northern Ireland where people's lives can be at particular risk from terrorists, he is prepared to make an exception to this general rule.
In considering whether an applicant has a good reason for a firearm certificate for a personal protection weapon (normally a handgun) the Chief Constable must be satisfied that there is a real and immediate risk to his life from terrorists. In making that determination the Chief Constable will normally consider whether the person is at specific risk or occupational risk.
In 2012 a total of 2,924 licenses in NI had 'Personal Protection Weapon' among the conditions of use.

I found myself shouting at the computer! TAG, you CAN own a highly lethal firearm like an Uzzi but it is not your RIGHT to own it. You'd better have a damn good reason for needing an Uzzi or even a revolver, otherwise the police will not let you have one. Realistically, the only people who own firearms of any description are members of gun clubs who aim at paper targets and must keep their weapons at the gun club locked in a steel cabinet when not in use, farmers who own shotguns to keep down pests, very rich people who hunt deer in the Scottish Highlands and people who guard the Prime Minister and other VIPs who are ALL highly trained soldiers and know how to use their weapons. As for the police, there have always been some police officers who are trained in the use of firearms even in the Nineteenth Century, today there are police patrol vehicles with firearms locked away in a box. If they need to use the weapons, they open the box. Usually the very sight of a British policeman aiming a firearm will bring about an end to the situation.
Your Second Ammendement allows you to carry firearms but the price of that ammendment amounted to 37,000 people dying of gunshot wounds in 2017 including suicides. In England and Wales (population 55 million,) there were 33 fireams related deaths in 2019.
In France, (population 66 million,) where I now live and where the police are routinely armed, there 1,800 firearms related deaths each year.
I know where I prefer to live!
PS. I served in the British Territorial Army for four years. I cannot bring myself to call small-arms "guns." To us guns have wheels!

I never get the gun laws in america considering the amount of violence. Something should be done. Personally i would not feel at all safe walking about in areas of america where people are allowed to be carrying guns in the street.

As has been said, most Brits don’t feel the need or want to own a gun, so we don’t even need to apply. I would presume Police, military, certain sports persons, maybe farmers living in the country, hunters etc are most likely to legally own guns. I know we had restrictions on higher calibre weapons after the massacre in Hungerford circ 1987 and then the primary school shooting in Dunblane Scotland in 1996 which resulted in heavier restrictions on handguns. I was in my early 20’s in 1996 and worked in Security, where my role required firearms and explosives training in 1995 the course allowed me to fire various weapons from a shotgun to a Glock but when I returned in 1996 we weren’t allowed to even fire weapons. It’s just the way the UK operates and firearms incidents are few and far between with minimal casualties and no mass shooting events. We have far more issues with knives especially amongst UK youth where knife crime is prevalent.
I think if there's one issue that separates the mindset of the UK from the US it's probably this one! And, rather unfortunately, it has led to that common perception of America still being the wild west. Having said that, Britain does feel like a more aggressive culture now than I can remember growing up with and I do find it troubling. I have no doubt that if guns were more readily available, they would replace knives as the weapon (of defence) of choice. And I hope we don't get there, because there's more than enough belligerence slopping around in this country as it is.
You have to remember that we don’t really have a gun culture in the U.K.
you mentioned about when we went hunting needing more than 3 shots. Most people don’t go hunting at all. A lot of the animals shot are by gamekeepers, or farmers who have the “legitimate” reason to own a firearm. And that test (as you said) is very strict.
Most of the more dangerous firearms (ie the automatics) are basically impossible to own. Try convincing the police you need one of those.
You cannot carry guns in public, and even air weapons or BB guns are pretty controlled. The gun shops are basically filled with very expensive shotguns. No cheap Walmart pump action guns, or cheap ammo. And without the correct paperwork, you get nothing.
It’s just a completely different mind set to the US.

Also if you need to fire a volley of bullets while hunting then maybe it's not the activity for you. You're just going to rip the animal to shreds. Be accurate, quick and a clean kill

No no no the police in uk are not just hall monitors there is still crime over here just not as much involving guns, a lot of knife crime but we still have crime. Gun holders basically get apply for a gun licence which our police look into why the want gun what it will be used for etc , its really rare to have a gun we as a country just don’t have them

In England it is NOT legal to own a gun for home defense, if you own a gun and use it on intruders that do not have guns then you are breaking the law and will be arrested.

It did say the shotgun can’t hold more than 3 bullets doesn’t mean you can’t have more bullets than that because reloading is a thing

As pointed out at the end of the video, there is no affinity for the idea of owning guns. That can't be overstressed. It's not that we had them in our homes and they were somehow outlawed. They were (by and large) not there in the first place!
Guns were never as prevalent here as in the US. However after we had an attrocity here, the government introduce much stricter rules as to who could own a gun.

My Dad had a shotgun (in England) my God the amount of precautions we had to take in the house for him to even get his license was immense
Hi Favour, maybe in America a start could be made by limiting the sort of guns that can be held by individuals. There might be arguments for them and individual freedoms, but I can't see any reason for a citizen to own a machine gun. I know the laws differ from state to state as well which must make it tricky.
The whole point of gun ownership in the 2A is so the public can fight the government, not hunting or for fun, so, really, you should be able to have whatever the army can have. BTW Machine guns are already illegal in the US, Reagan banned them.

Guns haven't really been a part of our culture for a long time but I know New Zealand and Australia have both tightened their gun laws in the past 3 years and have had a huge reduction in gun related deaths.
Good Friday agreement and the uk police have the power to enforce the Queen peace and maintain law and order.the reason why no hand guns are aloud anymore was because of a mass primary school in 1996.

In Germany we also have massiv restrictions of who can own a gun (which I think should be even harder), but for example if you are allowed to own a gun does not allow you to go hunting, you need another license for this.

We have very very different ideas about guns and hunting to that in USA. We also don't have dangerous animals. However more guns surely means more gun crime, especially when you don't have too much regulations. I hear today there was another mass shooting in Florida. USA needs to change to make it safer. How many more deaths do you need to make the necessary restrictions.

We have a lot less gun violence because they’re so hard to get but we have so much knife crime at the moment!! So even if the USA got rid of guns I think they’d just move onto a different weapon.
Even if knife crime is worse here our homicide rates are still far lower than in the USA in real terms and per capita. Also, mass knifings are far less common than mass shootings, obviously.
It's certainly a point...but generally the death toll of someone going berserk with a knife is necessarily far smaller than the same offence with a gun...so there is still potentially a very worthwhile saving of life...
To kill someone with a knife you have to get close which greatly increases your chance of being overpowered and reduces your ability to do mass damage. With a high-powered gun you can kill someone from a distance with almost impunity and cause carnage. Knife crime is, by nature, a low casualty crime.
Yes, but someone with a knife attempting a mass stabbing could be subdued easier and is not going to kill as many people as if they had a gun
Fun fact: because rifles are permitted in any caliber size as long as they are not self-loading or pump-action, this means you can own a medieval-type cannon. Assuming you have a licence for it, naturally. Why? Because as long as the barrel is rifled, it's classed as a rifle with carriage, and so the cannonballs are not subject to concerns regarding caliber size.
So American. Home defence isn't a thing here. You can only have a gun for farming or sports.
Something that wasn't mentioned in the video was what caused our laws to tighten. For the most part it was due to the Dunblane shooting. It happened in the hometown of Andy Murray (tennis player).
This does make it sound easier than it is in reality to own these various types of firearms. Refer to the first part where you have to apply for a licence to own each individual firearm. The vetting is very strict.
Exactly right; the vetting process is to ensure a genuine need and discourage / disallow those who have no good reason for owning a firearm.
I don't think anyone in Europe have guns to protect themselves, but rather as a hobby or as a hunter. Unless you are a criminal
I think you need to check Switzerland. They have the 2nd largest number of firearms in Europe and (if I remember correctly), for hunting AND defence of the Country.

I'm SO glad that we have strict gun control here in the UK. Also, although it mentions that it's possible to purchase semi automatics and a wide variety of different guns, you would have to have an extremely GOOD reason for wanting one! This is why so many background checks are done; with the police vetting the person trying to get the license...

while I don't know much on the topic it definitely makes 100% sense that smaller weapons are prohibited. It's much much harder to conceal the larger weapons and transport them, plus the added red tape to even be licenced to own one.

All those semi-automatic EBRs (Evil Black Rifles) at the end there are in .22 rimfire. Their fullbore variants in semi-automatic are banned.
I am from the UK & am fascinated by guns. Forgotten weapons is one of my favourite RUclips channels. I own an old air rifle, but have no inclination to own a firearm.
This is the point. It is not illegal to own high-powered rifles in the UK but it is exceptionally hard to justify owning a high-powered rifle in the UK. I cannot think of a single legal scenario within the work, recreation or leisure categories where a high-powered rifle would be necessary, so it would be very hard to get a licence.
The police in the UK are there to enforce the law but they do this through responsible policing where the aim is always to de-escalate a situation, if at all possible. Carrying guns into minor situations immediately escalates that situation and greatly increases the chance of a tragic outcome. Since the police licence gun ownership they know in advance whether they are likely to be confronted by a gun and can act accordingly.
What about for the purposes of movie production?

I think the point of the ARs that are legal (shown near the end) is that the licensing needed to get them means they will only be used for specific purposes like for filming or training

Long barrelled handguns are particularly useful in the UK in case you meet a punk that was feeling lucky and wanted to make your day.
Here in Arizona we only have to fill out the Form 4473 (Background check) paperwork. No training or Permit is required to carry a Firearm "Open or Concealed carry". The only time you are required to have Training is if you apply for a Concealed Carry Weapons permit. Even though one is not needed to carry Concealed in AZ I keep my CCW permit current is for Reciprocity. Reciprocity allows me to carry Concealed in 36 other States
I went to university with someone whose hobby was shooting. He had a gun licence that permitted him to own guns - provided he kept them at the gun safe at his local gun club and didn't remove them from the gun club premises. So the video is misleading - it doesn't explain the conditions on ownership
also a bit misleading - have have a firearms certificate for my rifle and a shotgun licence for my shotguns. This are kept in a gun safe at my house and I can take them anywhere with the land owners permission. The police came to my house to interview me and had full access to my medical records to get the licences.
Its changed then you have to keep your guns at home now in a locked cabinet if there are 2 people licenced then each has to have his / her own cabinet and amunition has to be kept seperate in a locked safe . Strange thing is shotgun shells are not included and are not classed as amunition

You will never stop determined criminals from obtaining guns on the Black Market. However as a UK resident when I see news of Mass Shootings in America it's usually not a criminal that has preplanned something, but a bitter employee or student or something that has had a mental health crisis after being wronged somehow., in that scenario in the UK the individual would not have access to a gun.
Back in the 90s before gun laws were made more strict, my late wife worked in the department that handled gun license applications. (In Scotland this is called the Procurator Fiscal's Office). The video mentioned that your GP (General Practioner = family doctor) would be consulted. This meant you had to undergo a psychiatric assessment. 75% of applicants failed the psychiatric assessment so their applications were refused.
It make a difference to the police as well, more law enforcement officers are murdered each year in the USA than have been murdered in the UK (excluding Ulster) in the las 50 years, I live in a rural county, the few armed police we do have keep there weapons in a gun safe in there vehicle and it's rare that they open the safe the entire shift and it requires authority from a senior officer to do so

It turned out he was a courier and had mistaken my house for an office., because there was a brass plaque outside. In the US, I suppose he would be dead.
Handgun is confusing term because what is handgun is different in different places. For example in Finland handgun is firearm that has barrel shorter than 40cm and can be operated using only one hand.

I have a friend with a fire arms licence, and all his firearms are antiques from the Napolionic wars, the local firearms officer loves visiting him as they take them out into the farm test them out with gunpower and lead pellets on rabbits.

I once went by car from England to Australia. That involved going through a lot of countries, some of which were going through hostilities. We saw people who were armed in some of the countries. They were surprised to see us, but we were not armed, and we were always treated well. We were adamant that if we had been armed, and had been freaked out by the other people's weapons, we might have been tempted to show ours and caused a more violent reaction.
Guns are not used in general for self defence purposes although their are incidents of this over the years. Primary use is for sport or vermin
whilst we're allowed those guns as you saw there's A LOT of restriction on whether you can get them.

Also if you have the right license then you can have the main gun on an armoured vehicle ie a tank.
There is also obsolete calibre which means you don’t need a license to own one as the ammunition is not available in the U.K.

You use to have air title's in England alot my Daughter's dad had one when we were dating and use to fire it in his bedroom, so did his brother's and friends, this was in the eighties.
I've only ever used a gun in 3 places.
1. When I was 8 and on holiday in Spain, the hotel resort had a shotgun you could use as part of the games they held there daily. Guns was locked away when not in use in a huge bunker and you were always supervised. It was essentially a "shoot as close to the centre and whoever wins gets a medal" thing that usually ran for about 30minutes.
2. When I was 9 and went to a clay pigeon shooting place
3. When I was 14 and signed up for the cadets, and there was a shooting range.
Otherwise, I've never come across anyone who has ever owned a gun or wanted one or has been threatened by one.
I imagine the more automatic guns are for use in shooting ranges than actually owned by people in their homes
So, day-to-day police don't generally need to carry firearms because it's unlikely they'll need one, and as such, why tempt fate?
Uk person brought up with guns here! To my knowledge you have to present the certificate(s) you have to the firearms dealer and then they know what you can and can't buy and gun shops mostly only exist in small villages or near shooting clubs (like Bisley). Anybody who has a clean bill of mental health, no criminal record and is willing to fill out the forms can easily get a gun if they prove they are part of a shooting club or need it for work (for example if you work in pest control) but most people are ill informed or can't be bothered with the hassle :)

The GP referred to in the video is the person's doctor who hopefully will know if the applicant is mentally fit to be issued with a license, same with the interview

No guns but some slip through the cracks, 2 days ago 5 minutes from where I live in North London someone was shot dead so it happens just not as much as other places in the world
I think the main differed between the laws is because in the uk nobody really wants a gun apart from if they need it and because we know that few people have it we never feel the need to pull out a gun to use it for defence
