Tim from Canada would it not be a little sneaky if you put a little bit of green or corn in some sort of a pale and hang it so she can see it if you were just dealing with the one stubborn cow to train.. putting a bucket inside a stall, and putting a little bit of feed or corn in the bucket, having her see it just to train

I think that your dad shows a very good understanding of the cattle. They aren't necessarily mean, just stubborn sometimes. My dad had one cow, Molly, for many years. He raised her and when he started to milk her (by hand) it took a while for her to get used to it, but she was a sweet cow and no problem after she learned. And when he had to quit, he was able to sell her to a local farmer that he knew.
We have a tradition of naming animals Molly now. One of cats was first named Half & Half because of her coloring and later I called her Molly. Then when my dad passed away, we inherited some of his cats, and one of them was named Molly. So, we ended up calling the first one Half-a-Molly and the other one got to have the name all by itself. Still have her, although she is now blind. Names are fun. Can't remember if you name you cows or not. Would be interesting to hear all the names people have given theirs.
The hills there are so beautiful and the pond area is looking great. Thanks for the video.

Tim from Canada.. I grew up on a farm, but I had beef cows.. and pigs and horses.. this is what I needed to do to get them in a stall or into the barn. Feed them a little bit of green or corn to start them out just so they are familiar certain times of the day when you need to bring them in or let them out Vanessa get used to the corn you were feeding them hang a bucket in the stall rattle, I can every time you were going to feed them they know the sound you start smacking two cans around every time you were going to feed them or bring them into the barn and then put a little bit of green or corn. in the manger or a bucket they get used to this and they know the sound you start smacking the cans. Eventually you will get them in the barn. This is the same way for putting them in the stall. I know this is a long speech, but only way I can explain it. This is the way I used to do it because it was tied to me by old farmers that dentis you pick up a few tricks from the old farmers on how to deal with stubborn animals… hope this helps with suggestion

Good variety in the video. Makes life a lot easier when cattle are used to being handled on a daily basis. My in-laws used to milk in stanchions. The cows seemed to pick their own spot and it was a waste of time trying to get them to go into another spot. The seeding and pond are coming along nicely.

I milk in a flat parlor, I’m a gate guy. Jig up a little alley, then for the rowdy ones I use the gate like a squeeze chute. They relax quick and rarely kick afterwards.

  • @MorganOtt-ne1qj

And to think, I would hate breaking a hiefer to a parlor. Dad would always want a big cow in front and behind the hiefer, and let them kinda squeeze her a bit. Some of those mature Holstein cows filled the 1970 herringbone pretty full, and they worked well limiting 2 year olds movement.

  • @danw6014

I never believed in the word stubborn.. That to me means I got out smarted. I begin to see that I just have to make my idea her idea. I figured out the hard way to make my idea my horse's idea. If I forced her then there was no way she was going to see it as her idea. We have a parallel parlor. With new heifers I set it so she follows another cow in. Sometimes I set a gate. I always stay calm and quiet. Sometimes I may have to let her move back around the holding pen and then take a fresh start. Same thing when if she doesn't understand the turn. I may back her up and then start again. I focus on trying to get her to look for the open area. Most of the time, the time the heifers I taught to go in take right to it. The other handy thing is those tails can be a steering wheel. Twist it to the left should get their right eye. Twist it to the right should get their left eye. Their feet follow their eyes.

Cows do that on purpose you know. Crap all over I mean. When I was a kid I and my kid friends used to talk to cows. If you're not from a farm you probably don't realize that but it's true. They think it's funny. They watch farmers cleaning their barns all the time and just do it to irritate them and then they laugh about. It's true. Both that kids can talk to cows, which ends when they reach about 12, and that cows laugh at farmers. A lot actually.

"Better is in the eye of the beholder. They just finished repairing this barn, so probably "no" on new build. But if it ain't broke, don't fix it. And this barn doesn't seem to be "broke." This farm also has some serious constrictions on siting of facilities....it's very "up and down" land there....we "flatlanders" (Fl.) would consider the whole unworkable.

Its a good question, but he has talked about how restricted his land is. Very little of it is flat. Even the big shop sits on an incline. Bet it would be great sledding in the winter though. Love the view of the farm buildings from the hilltops.
