  • This is the list of the most underrated PROG bands ever. The methodology employed here is pretty basic: where a band is in the collective consciousness versus where they actually belong and the difference between the two give us this:
    1, Soft Machine
    2. Gentle Giant
    3. Van Der Graaf Generator
    4. Nemo/JPL
    5. Camel
    6. Anekdoten
    7. Happy The Man
    8. Kaipa
    9. Le Orme
    10, echolyn
    11. Nektar
    12. Solaris
    13. Jade Warrior
    14. Renaissance
    15. Yuka & Chronoship
    16. Finch
    17. Cast
    18. Anyone's Daughter
    19. England
    20. Magenta
    21. Birth Control
    22. Family
    23. Audience
    24. Starcastle
    25. Man

    One of my favorite underrated prog rock bands is pretty unknown, it's an England based band called Morgan and they only came out with two albums back in the early 70s called Nova Solis and The Sleeper Wakes, definitely worth listening to and checking out if nobody has ever heard of them. Another one is a more modern prog metal/rock band from America just called 3 with albums like Wake Pig and The End is Begun, a band that changes styles and makes catchy songs with a prog flavor in my opinion.

    Hi Scott thank you for earlier recommending Nemo, I’d never heard of them until you mentioned them previously in your Top 100 bands. I’ve now remedied that in double quick time.
    I can wholly endorse Anyone’s Daughter, Nektar (esp. Recycled; Tab and Remember the Future); Camel (as you said, not so underrated by us here in the UK); England; Solaris and Echolyn.
    To add some other names: IQ; Threshold; Shadow Gallery (the latter two are prog metal but they sacrifice neither song nor melody).

    VDGG gets underrated because some folks can't stomach Peter Hammill's vocal style( an acquired taste, to say the least)...I had that problem with them at first listen, but the music is so superb/great/wondrous that I learned to roll with it. And on the later albums, his style actually is appropriate to the lyrics Gentle Giant and Camel definitely belong to the " underrated " club.

    Yes, I agree with Kellywann - Gentle Giant, despite their resurgence, still ought to be ranked up there with Yes, Jehtro Tull, ELP and King Crimson. Other contenders might be
    Deus Ex Machina (Italy...although possibly more jazz-rock than prog);
    UNIT (Scotland...although not technically a pure progressive rock outfit);
    Curved Air...we need more violas and less guitars and that's official;
    Wolf (the Darryl Way ensemble, especially when they drafted in that singer from IF, you know, what's his name);
    Caravan...perhaps
    and a couple of others but then if I go any further, there's liable to be a list of 20 groups and I have to stop somewhere!

I was expecting a good band to perform.I was dead wrong! They were INCREDIBLE! Their musicianship was off the charts. They played a miscellany of originals and covers sung by their first lead singer Cliff Fortney, who had a style a la Pete Hammill and Peter Gabriel. Oh, thank you those 2 chaps below (or above, wherever they appear) for giving shout-outs to GENTLE GIANT, partly because they are my favourite progressive rock group but primarily because they really do belong (in my evidently biased opinion) within the top six...in which case it'll be the top seven, of course.
    Also, I think Van Der Graaf Generator merit more recognition. Here I cannot be accused of bias because I dislike intensely about 90% of their music which I find grotesquely slow, dreary and tedious but, after all, how many other groups sound like them? Their lyrics and texts are often strange and generally intelligent plus the contributions from David Jackson and Hugh Banton are inventive and original. I think I can be objective and recognise their importance to the history of prog rock despite my aversion to most of their work. I do like Killer and Theme One!

    if you wanna mention Van Der Graaf Generator, I'd say you should also include their Long Hello albums they did outside the band. I've only heard the first one, but I really love it!
    otherwise, some music acts that also stand out to me as being very underrated (though I'm not sure they should make this top 25):
    IQ and Pendragon are pretty well-known I think, but I'd still consider them underrated since they are simply my two favourite progressive bands of all time. I literally rank them up there with the likes of Yes and Genesis.
    Ezra Winston. I just listened to them again, and holy crap I forgot how good their two original albums are (I've yet to listen to their new one from 2021)
    Willowglass. Not much to say, I just really really love his music
    Night Flight. One album ever released, and so obscure they are not even on Progarchives at all and Prog Line couldn't even get the band's name right (yet they were just released on Tidal, which
    really shows how far streaming services have improved when it comes to their selection of progressive rock), but wow that album is amazing, I always love coming back to it. They're not the best ever, but they're just so obscure they are very underrated by default.
    Canamii. Another obscure band with only one album, but to me there's something about their sound that makes them stand out from other bands. Feelings in particular really transports you to a different world
    North Star. I can see why one would dismiss them, but I genuinely believe the brotherly duo of Glenn and Kevin Leonard was one of the most underrated power houses of progressive rock. Their music can feel hit or miss to me, but when their music hits, it hits HARD
    for my last one, this is half-meant as a joke, but I still wanna bring attention to them:
    Kiss. Yes, that Kiss. Crazy makeup-wearing Kiss. Hear me out: everyone knows Kiss for their hard rock, and they were immensely successful at it, but here's a fun fact: Kiss once released a progressive rock album. It's called Music From the Elder, and I was shocked by how much I liked it, considering who made it. Odyssey in particular is easily my favourite Kiss song of all time. While Kiss in general aren't an underrated band, I do feel like their foray into progressive rock deserves more attention and credit.

    I saw an American band called Mckendry Spring in the early seventies, they were billed as a country rock band, but were more prog playing extended instrumentals such as God Bless the Conspiracy and a version of Niel Youngs Down by the River. ‘Acid in Wounderland’ is a little one-off gem by two ex members of Eloy calling themselves Ego on the Rocks. The bonus tracks on the cd version are very good but probably would have been best served being put on a follow-up album as they alter the feel of the vinyl experience a bit. I love Anyone’s Daughter’s self-titled album. For brilliant instrumental stuff from Europe it doesn’t come much better than Schicke Führs Fröhling. ‘Sunburst’, ‘Ticket to Everywhere’ and ‘Sunburst’ are amongst their best. ‘Ammerland’ by just Führs Fröhling is a lot mellower but still great - Schicke must be the lively one in the band. While you are in Europe why not check out Grobschnitt and Holger Czukay, ex of Can. I don’t know if they would come under the title of prog rock but a little musical wandering never hurt anybody.

    I was pleasantly surprised that you had Soft Machine in the #1 spot. They're my favorite band, well the Wyatt period is my favorite. I love Fifth because Phil Howard was a beast on drums. I love the BBC recordings with him. I still dig everything up to Seven because I'm a big fan of Hopper and Babbington, plus Marshall is such a great drummer. I find Bundles overrated even though it's a fine album. I like Holdsworth, but I find his lightning fast playing too frilly and cold. I really like what he did with 'Igginbottom though.
    Softs is a cool album, probably their most traditional prog sounding record. Etheridge is a great player.
    Anyway, Soft Machine as the Wyatt Hopper Ratledge trio was just mind-blowing and loud and in my opinion, bared the roots of noise and punk. I'm also a huge fan of the quintet with Dean and Dobson. I wish Dobson had stayed with them longer. He was sooo awesome.
