I thinked before that it was whistle or a mix between whistle and head voice.
When I saw videos of vocal coaches saying the soprano notes of Dimash was head voice, i couldn't agree because I'm aware that in my phonation it is different when I sing alto/contratenor or soprano parts.

Great video! Thanks so much! sooo.... can you explain how do you determine when a note is in head voice and when it reaches flageolet? Because flageolet is also connected, I don't know how you tell. Especially it's difficult if someone like Dimash is mixing head voice and flageolet. You said sometimes flageolet sounds squeaky and not very useful. However, that soprano singer in your example and also Dimash in "Sinful Passion" both sounded very clear and strong. By the way, Dimash also has some whistle notes that sound very strong with a vibrato. I don't know how he does that. But I think he does spend a lot of time practicing in his flageolet. There are lots of videos of him walking through corridors or behind the stage singing very high. I saw a couple of clips where he was singing segments of "the magic flute" for example. So when you say that to increase your range it's important to spend a lot of time in head voice and flageolet, it makes total sense. Loved your video! Thanks again!

I'm no expert, but I've heard of the term "3rd passaggio". Many people out there disagree that male singers have this transition of head voice to flageolet/whistle register, and say that only female singers have this passage. I'm a young male who've only started singing roughly 1.5yrs ago, and I still haven't unlocked my mix & head voice (only reinforced falsetto, but I'm not giving up!!). I also feel that I'm hitting a ceiling at around F5/F#5. That's the 3rd passaggio. It really takes specific exercises to unlock or find that feeling for flageolet. There are some RUclips videos explaining about this, but certainly not much. Tell me about your progress!

Finally! An analysis of the vocals of Dimash from someone who knows precisely what is going on and doesn't just sigh and gasp and witter on about aliens and dolphins. Thank You! Already you sound like you are well beyond a Masters level. Are you heading for a PHD? Good luck with whatever you choose. Meanwhile ... A question: I read a comment on another site where the person was referencing an video clip of an interview of Dimashs' former vocal teachers. They reported that these teachers described Dimash as having a very unique (abnormal ) Vocal {Chord?} structure that was very rare and this placed him in the category of; not a Tenor, nor a Countertenor; -but what they apparently termed 'a True Male Contralto'. This, it seemed, provided him with a full Tenor range extending up into/including the Mezzo-Soprano range. On the face of it, this seems to accord with so many reactor vocal coaches saying they are not hearing a countertenor but a true female soprano sound. But YOU are saying what we are really hearing is a Head Mix seamlessly moving up into an extremely well trained Flageolet. So do you think any of part of that commentators story 'holds water' - or like a leaky sieve is actually complete nonsense? The other question / hypothesis going the rounds is about Dimash having this enormous range through some kind of specialized training pre and post adolescence. Do you have a view about this? Cheers L
Dimash just trained hard during the stages of puberty on how to not lose his upper range while naturally our voice change over those years. he cant be something like "male contralto". His low notes are so round and deep like a baritone would sound. I'm a tenor who trained to extend my low range and dont have those rich low notes as he has, how could he be in high extremes above tenors/counter tenors and still have way better low notes quality?
Ps.. I keep thinking it would be fun to sent the TARDIS back in time and collect Farinelli and bring him here to also 'react' to Dimash. Although that might be a bit cruel to him... :)
I found my flageolet pretty early (I think I was 14 or 15 years old). My problem is, I can only access my flageolet register very early in the morning, usually after I woke up, for like 30 minutes. But it completely disappear for rest of the day. Sometimes on good days I can access the register after I sing some easy songs for my voice. But it's very rare. Early in the morning it's so easy for me to reach a d6 but for the rest of the day I can extend my head voice to the B5 but that's the point where I begin to strain. I just start to get husky really easily there. Could this mean voice damage? I know how to access the flageolet, in the morning its nothing for me but later in the day... It's just frustrating. Im working on that for 3 years but got nearly 0% progression.

Hello, That’s a very specific question. Flageolet is beneficial for your whole vocal instrument, but the male mid range (C4-G4) needs other things as well in order to strenghten up. Woke up with it really gritty, and five minutes of very quiet, airy flageolet made it clear as a bell. I believe it is some form of chest voice. I think of it as the perfect vocal rehabilitator. It brings my voice back in a way that falsetto doesn't.
Like any other passagio, it's not exactly determinable which note is the 100% bridge to flageolet. In male voices, that's my experience, it starts to kick in around Eb5-F5. Then you can choose to mix it with head voice, keep on doing full head voice, or just tiny full (sort of) flageolet. It's also voice dependant of course. Actually this also valid for lower registers. For example, growl is connected and vocal fry is disconnected.

dimash without using technique takes an E2 in the chest voice and an F#6 in the head voice, this is already something abnormal.
