Most players go with the media wave and say what will not cause them problems.
Do you really think players with the killer mentality like Bird, Magic, MJ and Kobe would let a flopper and whiner as Lebron play with them???!!!
They would destroy him just with the trash talk and make him cry during training, then they would go to the coach asking "WTF was that idea, Who TF is that crybaby?!"

For a good overall view of how effective this man was offensively, I highly recommend watching a video titled "Larry Bird Was LEGENDARY During His Prime! 1985-86 Highlights | GOAT SZN". The main thing about Larry is that he didn't have the word "quit" in his lexicon. You NEVER saw Larry Bird give up. He was hustling until the last buzzer because there was NO QUIT in his soul. If you were a teammate and you quit before the last second, you can be sure that you'd hear about it from Bird. Today, you see the self-proclaimed "greatest player of all time" (who shall remain nameless) simply give up on defense, or go to the locker room with time left on the clock. Larry Bird would rather bleed out on the floor than do that.

Bird played in a tougher era than today's NBA, so not only could he hang with them, but he would also be even more dominating. That era in the 80s had more Hall of Famers than any other era. A lot of NBA fans these days, don't have a clue on how good Bird was. Just show them what these superstars who actually played against him have to say about Larry Bird.

For me top 3. Just his versatility, will, sacrifice has no parallels. The haters or deniers argue that he only played 12 seasons (13 but sat one whole season because surgery). Actually he played 7 seasons healthy and what he accomplished in 7 seasons is goat like accomplishments. This accomplishments get diluted in the stats across 13. But if you actually analyze his first 8 seasons you will
Find that he made the conference finals at least 7, 3 consecutive MVPs 2 finals mvps, 2 second in MVP voting and 7top 5 in mvp. People said that MJ had a flu game, well bird had a broken back seasons, a broken skull game and many others. His level of sacrifice has no parallel. He made HOFers (McHale and Parish) said by them. Bird today would average 40

Absolutely top three. Knowing what pain he endured just to play a game makes him in a place all his own. When you learn everything about him and all of his injuries and still see him dominate the best in the league I don't think there is an equal player to even compare to Bird. He will always be number one in my book. If you haven't yet, react to the 5 times Larry Bird was injured but refused to quit and the 4 times he was hurt but showed male toughness. There is a lot of coverage in his highlights of a game against the Pacers when he fractured his right cheek and got a mild concussion. The night before that game he spent in the hospital in traction. His teammates said he struggled to get dressed out to play that night. In the first or second practice of his sophomore year in high school he broke his ankle in two places and tore the ligaments. While on crutches he still went to every practice and worked on shooting left handed. He was just phenomenal.

  • @unity1016

Yes - top 3. I don't get into the discussion of who's the best. Too many ways to determine that. Larry didn't care about stats; he cared about wins. For example he was once one steal away from a quadruple double be the end of the third quarter. He sat down and the coach asked him if he shouldn't go back in to get one more steal. He said no, I've already done enough damage. He was fun to watch. You never knew what amazing thing he would do next.

Lol, you'll have to make you a list of Larry Legend videos! I say that, because there are so many. 😂
    Thank you for this. 😊
Nah, he has a 60 pt game! Think it was against Dominique (Atlanta Hawks). Even crazier, he was "1" steal away from a QUADRUPLE double, in the "3rd quarter" of a game!!! There are only a few in NBA history, that have achieved a quadruple double!

Bird used to be so good at basketball and winning that he'd get bored. To keep himself motivated, before going into an arena he'd ask, "What's the record for points scored here," then he'd go out and break it. One game he got bored and decided to play lefthanded. He said, I'm going to shoot everything with my left hand and proceeded to get 27 points. He had all kinds of things wrong with him, a hand injury that he got before going to the NBA that would put most players out of the game. He also had to deal with a bad back in the last six years of his career. It was so bad that he couldn't sit on the bench, he had to lie on the floor. He even broke his cheek one playoff game, went to the locker room, played the second half and Celts won the game. They don't call him Lary Legend for nothing.

Larry wasn't 'ahead of his time' so much as he was the definition of 'his time'. Bird and Magic changed the NBA in the 80's together.

Bird could do anything he wanted on the court. He was a rebounder, assist, shooting, passing fool. He could have averaged 40 if he wanted but he got everyone involved to win, not show off. Remember the era he played in. Just to get out of the East was hard. How many HOF'ers have to tell you he was the man. Larry is the GOAT!

Even more amazing about the story from John Stockton in Utah is something he omitted in this telling of the story. Not only did he walk by the bench and tell them how many points he felt like scoring; he did it in three quarters and pulled himself from the game since the Celtics were up by 20. The GOAT!

Also look into Pete Maravich.. then think about how strict dribbling rules were back then.
Bird was really something special.. if he had the athleticism of someone like Jordan would unquestionably be the GOAT.

Larry Bird plays and talks like he's playing pick-up at the local park. I mean this as a compliment. He had more than just routine moves learn in school teams. He was not a one trick pony. This only makes his trash talk funnier.

Larry Legend is my goat.....I love watching you react to him, you are bright and more importantly, are able to see, accept and give credit when it's earned and deserved because you are eager and excited to learn. Dude, especially learning something about past generations that points out how unaware about those times and people you were, I love when that happens, I feel humbled and a bit ashamed over how mistaken , uninformed and disrespectful my opinion and thoughts were but also mixed with feeling the sheer joy of the awesomeness I just found out about like I found buried treasure! Lol hard to put into words , obviously. I'm now a fan of yours😊

True story; the Celtics went into Utah in 1987 and after 3 Q's led the Jazz 91-60. The starters were done for the night.
Between Q's the Jazz stat guy went to the BOS bench and told them Bird had 30 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists and 9 steals. Only one other quadruple-double had ever occurred in NBA history (with blocked shots.)
Told Bird about it and asked him if he wanted to go back in and he said "nah, I'm done for the night."

Yup, he's a goat!! I got to attend some Celtics games (Boston) back in the day, and he played all-out, all the time, every game!! It's true~ he was a magician on the court. When he called his opponent "Homs" he was not being disrespectful~ it's because he grew up playing primarily with Black players and had nothing but respect for them (which is why he was known to say "Don't put a white guy in me~ that's disrespectful", Lol. Thanks for the reaction! If you haven't seen his greatest passing highlights, you must check them out~ you'll see why so many of his opponents refer to him as a magician, or savant. He was a genius on the court. 🍀

The Celtics were a 29-win team before he was drafted. His rookie year he led them to 61 wins with just the addition of Larry. His 2nd year in the league he won a championship[. He was a leader from day one. From 79-88, the lowest he finished for MVP was 4th and that was his rookie year followed by 2nd 2nd 2nd 1st 1st 1st 3rd 3rd...One of only 3 players ever to win back to back to back MVPs and the last player to do it . Keep in mind this was a league with Jordan and the Dream Team in it!! Larry was hands down the best player in the NBA in the 80s and the reason why MJ never won anything until Bird retired. MJ said that Larry taught him everything he knows about trash-talking and also said Larry was the greatest SF he ever saw. As a kid I went to a game Larry had 36pts 16 boards and 11 dimes. He could do it all...Fun fact He pioneered the 50 40 90 club 50% from the field 40% from 3 and 90% from the line

The GOAT conversation has too many variables to call anyone person the GOAT.
Jordan is probably the greatest all around player when you take athletic talent, skill talent, and heart talent.
Shaq is probably the most dominant big man that performed well in the playoffs while Wilt was probably a little more skilled in regard to shooting and in better shape. Hakeem is probably the best power forward to play center, because he was more finesse and raw skill than Shaq or Wilt. Kareem was a combination of Wilt and Hakeem. Then you have Russel who was really more of a Forward since he wasn’t 7’0” but was the greatest winner of all time.
Lebron is probably the best regular season player ever, but is really not a Batman but really by far the great Robin of all time. He lacks the killer instinct and clutch gene.
Nobody was more clutch than Larry Bird. Jordan may have been equal in clutchness, however Larry Bird is the only person to sweep Jordan 2 times in the playoffs and never lost in the playoffs.
Since big men are more of a weapon and not a general I would lean toward a guard as being more likely to be the true GOAT, and you can not even easily say who the greatest big man (center) was without it being close in debate.
As Pat Riley said, for a shot to win the game I take Jordan, but for a shot to save my life I take Bird.
In a small snapshot of time I think you could say Larry is the GOAT based on his clutch ability, and his ability to make others better by his play off the ball, but when it comes to total career backed with accolades and clutchness I would say Jordan. But remember Bird swept Jordan twice.
If Bird would have lasted 20 seasons without injury you could probably definitively say he is the GOAT.
Bird vs Jordan one on one Jordan is probably better, but if you hand Bird and Jordan the exact same team head to head I think Bird edges out Jordan 55-60% of the time due to Bird being a better team player.
One game with all in their primes? I take Bird.

Dr. J misremembered Larry's immediate impact as a rookie. Celtics when from 29 wins to 61 wins...a 32 win swing...
Without McHale, Parrish, Ainge, DJ, Bill Walton..etc. same players...Larry was THAT good.
