- The Twilight Zone was a great show. I just finished watching the 156 episodes over the past few weeks. It's one of those very old shows that you just don't mind watching again and again. The Twilight Zone I have seen most of the episodes more than twice over the years. I was watching this episode and saw a very funny moment that reminded me what others are going through in a day to day job. I thought I would take a break from the marketing videos and post something I find funny. Enjoy. Thanks CBS of yesteryear.
This episode warns against the rise of automation. Today we have corporations replacing even more people with computerized automation and even AI
Rod serling must have had a hunch of what our present time would be like.
Man, I love this episode. I have watched every single one of them multiple times. Such good writing. Not bad for me being a 31 year old man. I have never missed a 24 hour marathon since I was about 11.
Wow, I love that back-hand right across the face.
His head came back like a bobblehead
My boss when he fired me! Fooled him! I retired and he's still working! Awww too bad!
You should have went 5 seconds longer to hear Hanley say, "Because when I walk away from you I walk away clean! And that Mr. Whipple is one hell of a trick!"
"Because when I walk away from you, I walk away CLEAN! And THAT, Mr. Whipple, is one helluva trick!!!!" {Rod had to convince CBS not to censure the word "helluva"}
If I’m not mistaken, that was the very first time a swear word was said on TV.
Found it!

I always end up replaying this at least 5 times! Too damn funny!
I laughed so hard. He BITCH slapped him!
He deserved the backhand. Watch the episode and you'll see why.
Okay, but would Hanley REALLY just give up his severance and pension just like that? He'd be an idiot to do so. Much better to leave with a handshake than a slap, knowing you'll be siphoning off some of Whipple's money until the end of your life!
These are the players - with or without a scorecard. In one corner a machine; in the other, one Wallace V. Whipple, man. And the game? It happens to be the historical battle between flesh and steel, between the brain of man and the product of man's brain. We don't make book on this one and predict no winner... but we can tell you for this particular contest, there is standing room only - in the Twilight Zone.
Three words, Mr. Whipple...Tower of Babel.
You KNOW what happens..........."Has it ever occurred to you that you MIGHT be trading efficiency for PRIDE?"/"WHEN YOU'RE DEAD AND BURIED, WHO DO YOU GET TO MOURN FOR YOU??????"/"I think it might be a good idea, if you ran an 'equipment check'-- on YOURSELF!!!!"/**REPEAT AND COMBINE ALL INTO ONE ENDLESS, SPEEDED-UP LOOP**
I don't personally consider this scene funny. It shows Hanley as being a man of principle, who can't be bought.
Finally, a voice of reason. I can't tell you how many times I've had tromp through the misspellings, the shitty grammar by the misguided idiots who never picked up a history book, or listened to writers, poets or statesmen.
It's funny because it happened so fast with that fake sound. It was a serious moment made to look ridiculous
That's what I like about 1964
Mr. Hanley, went a little 'POSTAL", before it was, in "STYLE".
This may be the greatest moment in television history.
Factories had their own bars back then??? Wow the 60's were some great times.
lokeymexican I don’t think factory had bars; It was just the local watering hole
Oh ya lmao
It was a bar across the street in the episode.
I just found out that USC has bars. Awesome.
Take this job and shove it... literally.
great episode! loved the series!!
Don't squeeze the Charmin!
How things have changed since classic Sci-Fi TV days now that machines are taking over the work force.
NICE! LOL!
It won't be long, I watched this episode a couple of months ago......worth watching. It gave me chills, this is not good. These people are playing God !!
1st prototype is expected last 2022 . We are living the Twilight Zone!!
When are people not playing god? this method of communication is playing god.
Mankind has been living in "The Twilight Zone" for 6,000 years---you're just very late on the uptake.
Unfortunately, this is only half of the story. The other side to this coin is if Mr. Whipple didn't innovate and replace human labor with machine labor, he would eventually lose his company to another company that did.
We are coming to a time now in human history where machines are more efficient than men. Maybe one day, with enough compassion, we can bring in a Universal Basic Income but it will be after a lot of misery, shame and anger.
Says the Chinaman
AND WHAT WILL MEN DO?? Do you really think leisure time is the only thing people want?? What an utterly shallow view of life.
@@paulpena5040 I'm sorry you don't have any hobbies besides making money for someone else. To a sufficiently clever mind, there is no limit to self-improvement. How's your hours looking after the COVID lockdown?
Dag. Handley brought wood.
This episode was on MeTV, today, 5-10-24.
I would have taken the money !
We don't need your subtitles, thank you. We adults can follow dialog and plot just fine without your attention hijacking fingers in the pie
It seems everyone wants to stick their finger in the creative pie! The person who posted this clip would be the jerk who's seen the movie before and sits next to you, whispering, " Watch this part! " in your ear every ten seconds.
I love the twilight zone. LOL this is hilarious. Oh snap a slap in the face..yikes.
BoyScout1960 "Okay, but would Hanley REALLY just give up his severance and pension just like that? He'd be an idiot to do so. ..."
That's OK... Whipple gets his comeuppance in the end (watch the full program) along with the rest of the community. A hazard of taking things out of context.
Is there a clip of Ted De Corsia’s “I’M A MAAAAAAAAAANNNNN, MR. WHIPPLE!!!!!!!” speech anywhere?
As an engineer, this sort of comforts me that I'll be the very last to go if the machines take over.
No, that will be entertainers to keep the obsolete former human capital complacent and occupied
Episode 154: Hanley busking for food at the bus depot
Saving them from doing work ? How is that a bad thing.
Seriously. This is a rare dud in the Twilight Zone canon. Absolutely everything about it is defending the practice it's supposed to be attacking. Whipple's critics all sound like raving cranks who act like they ENJOY work, and WANT parking lots to be crammed full, and hallways noisy with the voices of copious co-workers. Hanley slaps him, showing he's totally lost the argument, and Whipple just smiles and shows him how the elevator works. He's portrayed as such a sensible, relatable character, it's baffling that we're not supposed to side with him.
Audiences in the 60s should have been able to remember what it was like working hard labor in factories BEFORE automation. That black guy should have remembered that his grandfather's freedom came from people deciding maybe manual labor isn't the best backbone for an economy. "who's going to buy" the products the company makes? Probably a lot more people, as their prices plummet.
Kairu Hakubi.
I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not. Just in case you are serious, I visited your channel to see what kind of person would make such a statement. I listened to voice over demo, very nice work by the way. However have you heard some of the advanced text to speech software. One day they will have that technology perfected. Will that be a good thing for you? In this day and age everyone can potentially be replaced by a machine.
Amazon all the way!
Mr Bezo's in the near future!
Hey that one guy is Mr. Rutherford he’s Lupe’s dad and leave it to beaver I’m not certain but I think he was also on the Dick Van Dyke show
looks like his name is Richard Deacon, and he died at only 65. His filmography list is pretty long. He's been involved in a lot of projects.
TECHNOLOGY WITHOUT MORALITY. WE PEOPLE WITH THE ABILITY TO CREATE TURN THE TABLE MAKE YOUR OWN COMPANIES AND USE THE BARTER SYSTEM .
Knick knack paddy whack give the boss good smack...
I have never seen this episode.
Car Dealers of the future.
I thought it was funny in 1964 when I was 10.
The machines firing him is even funnier.
Mel (I mean Whipple) cries in his beer.
SO many people I wish I'd done that to before I retired.
Many liberal so called journalists deserve a back hand like this one.
I Know a really big famous retail place I'd like to tell that to
Weird, the funny part of the video seems to have been deleted. And I so wanted to laugh. Thanks for getting my hopes up with your dishonest title. :(
This is about replacement by automation but wouldn't society social consequences be the same if replacement was by machine, slave labor, off shore production or mass imported labor of those willing to work cheaper.
The Brain center at Whipples, not Mr Whipples...
What's funny is that I have always been and still am a Mr Whipple supporter, sometimes these Union/Marxist sensabilities do seem sympathetic to some!
Don't worry, we'll fight for your severance pay just the same.
Ew
Where are the men of principle now? Why are we allowing greed to shape our world?

Forget the overlays, they ruin the whole clip.
Irritating dialog on screen. It does not need it. I am not 10 years old.
A whole Brave New world: robohub.org/envisioning-the-future-of-robotics/
This was silly, not funny, not educational, barely entertaining. Now don't get me wrong, as a kid I loved watching Twilight Zone, but this particular episode was one of the more sanctimonious ones. Besides, as one of the commenters pointed out, Hanley would have had to be an "idiot" to have thrown away his severance pay and pension, not to mention end up in jail for assault and battery! High morals are fine and dandy when you're rich, but they're too pricey when you're trying to put food on the table or keep a roof over your head. Plus Violence Is NEVER An Acceptable Option!!!
What was there to laugh at? I've seen the full episode, and there wasn't anything to make anyone laugh there, either. Someone has a seriously warped sense of humor to think there's anything humorous here.
Mel Cooley has a second job?
