I recently had a gilt that didn’t know she was a mother. You described the exact thing mine did. 12 in 3 or 4 spots in the pasture. I gathered them all up , took every one to the barn and had to literally hog tie her to let them nurse the first time. After that she was perfectly normal. Thanks for your videos. I learn something from every video seems like.
The 🐖 looks great in their little 🏠 sitting, eating, and walking around with Mom .The 🏠 looks so amazing and they do look like they are in a safe place .Great job I see that you do love them and don't want to let them go.
nice work. We used to have a bunch of sows when I was in high school. biggest mistake was getting out of them instead of going bigger. someday, sooner than later I hope, I want to do this pasture deal.
I watched the video were Justin Rhodes visited your farm, and wanted to see more baby pigs! I am not a farmer but just a retired lady from Atoka Tennessee and am fascinated at what all you guys do! Good luck with your pigs!🐖🐖🐖
Awesome vid, very informative. Too bad about the losses but bintheredonethat I had a sheep who, despite my providng her a fine shelter decided to have her triplets outdoors in the middle of winter and before I got to them all three were frozen to the ground.
Does temp get down to negative territory where you live? I built a cattle panel hoop house for my boar and two gilt. So far one of my gilt have delivered us 8 piglets in December.
Hi! I love your videos! You are so helpful to this newbie pig raiser! We are raising Mangalitsa pigs. We have 2 pregnant gilts outside with the boar. They have calf hutches but I'm worried they will squish their babies as they all cram into one shelter to sleep! What are your suggestions?
Hello Sir, Do you ever run a mixed group of sows and gilts together? So perhaps the older gals can show the newbs how its done? Or would that not be a good idea?
Big topic. No, this system does not smell. In my opinion, any livestock system that has a stench I can smell half a mile away is a gross mismanagement. I prefer to capture every nutrient possible through adequate rotation or high levels of carbon.
FarmBuilder well let’s take into consideration that’s farmers are moving to slurry lagoon or have manure piles than build up than spread on crop ground in fall and winter. That will increase the manure scent
Share your shelter plans? We've tried several other options, still not happy with any of them. Your collapsible feature (genious) along with that lower line at the back for the piglets with that bump bar is awesome.
FarmBuilder I am also really interested in your shelters!!!! They look amazing!!!! Please let me know if I can get plans or at least maybe a general outline of how to build them. Coop156@gmail.com
We got into hog breeding for the first time last year with the intention of farrowing in pens instead of crates. We have discovered the high incidence, however, of smashed piglets, and I wonder if you have any recommendations for finding good mothering genetics. We've thought about heritage breeds, but they do tend to have less muscle, and I'm wondering if the best way to fix mothering is really to make that sacrifice.
4:35 - it looks like that pig is also about to become a couple dozen pork chops, 2 honey glazed hams, several pounds of bacon, and several pounds of sausage patties.
Richard Loch I have fairly big Sow’s so I made mine 8ft long and 6ft deep. I also made mine high enough so I can walk inside. Easier to clean, add straw etc. His look like they are about 8ft wide (full sheet of plywood) and approximately 4ft high.
each paddock is roughly 1/3 - 1/2 acre. Under normal conditions they are moving every 7-10 days. When farrowing though its about 3 weeks or whenever the piglets are ready to walk over to the new area.
I haven't been raising farmyard pigs maybe more then 7 years now, it seems after the second litter of piglets they don't conceive after that, so my question to you how long do you keep your sows, or maybe this would make more sense after being a Gilt how many more litters does she have after that?
@@FarmBuilder maybe I get to brag, my sows might be over producing, the most I had so far out of one sow was 18 and they all survived and the last litter my sow had 16 only 13 made it out of the 16, but I am into Heritage breed old spots , large black, red wattle, I think you are right on conditioning, disease no 2 my knowledge, I am suspecting it is the feed I am feeding them they're not getting the minerals that they should in their feed, it's just a mixed ration from a feed mill I believe I should start supplementing my feed

Do you have a video on how tall feed and mix etc... in one I saw a ibc turned into a scoop for tractor. If you could do one that would be really helpful
To the sausage house for the rejecting pig mothers, huh? The piglets will be put in a more loving environment while the heartless sow will become a dozen pork chops, 2 honey glazed hams, several pounds of bacon, and several pounds of sausage patties. You can probably get even more than a dozen pork chops from a pig that size, I'm guessing. Actually, would it be 2 hams, or 4 from one pig? Do some hams also come from the front legs?
FarmBuilder a gilt is a female pig less than six months that has never farrowed. Those pigs that you are calling gilts are in fact sows. Any female pig that has given birth to piglets is a sow.

Remember she is someone not something, instead of slaughtering her because she can't provide you some piglets why dont you consider bringing her to a forever shelter to a sanctuary. make a call I promise you'll have someone there rather expeditiously and maybe you'll understand what it's like to feel good for the doing the right thing. I know what it's like personally not to be able to have children and it's very painful and as you know or maybe you don't know, pigs are highly intelligent not far past humans. let her live her life probably another 20 to 25 years at a sanctuary where she can be who she is and be happy and be free not saying you should do this with all your pigs but every now and then there is something that is right and just about it. My Hope Is that one day you'll switch over to another type of farming that doesn't involve slaughtering of highly intelligent sentient beings
obviously I disagree with your assertions here but take no affront from your beliefs. The fact is all life is built on the death of other life, even down to the microbial level. Our task as farmers is to steward the land, resources and animals for a better tomorrow than today. I firmly believe animals play a key role in this process and are integral to human nutrition.
FarmBuilder well said, we don’t need to be offensive in the defence of good farming just polite and informative like you have been. There should be room for all opinions. Thanks for what you do keep it up

Pigs have a right to live long lives .
Very educational. Thanks
Excellent video brother
Thank you for this video. What keeps the piglets from leaving the pasture? Is the electric wire low enough that they stay in?
Thank you for sharing
So nice form sir
I love it baaaaaaaad Dat is so great love it

Occasionally but not often. One or two cold snaps a winter.
Good job wish I had space to practice this kind of pig farming back in Kenya 🇰🇪

They will, you will need to isolate the sow when she goes into labor. Also the Boar will get real frisky. Best move him out while they have piglets.
Hello Sir,
Do you ever run a mixed group of sows and gilts together? So perhaps the older gals can show the newbs how its done?

This is my plan in my area when I go back to Manila philippines. I try to make this style
Is there a place to get plans for your huts
Thank you for the information shared. Does this system reduce the smell of the pig waste. How do you handle their waste in this system.

how many litters do you get a year? and do you sell piglets or grown them for meat sale?
Will the mama pig attack you if you hold one of her piglets? And if she does, how dangerous can it be?
what about predators? fox or coyote? excellent videos!
+Rollin Tebbetts not an issue with pigs. Poultry is another story!
On pasture piglets like in the video do you clip eye teeth?
No.

I have been looking all over your web site for this, am i missing something? relly like your stuff, hoping to make it to a class at some point
How do you keep the piglets inside of the electric fence? Or do you trust that they will stay with their mommas?
We don't but they don't go to far away from the moms.
Good thing they don’t crush the piglets?
What's considered a good litter of piglets?
8 at weaning.

We've thought about heritage breeds, but they do tend to have less muscle, and I'm wondering if the best way to fix mothering is really to make that sacrifice.
Have you any problems with coyotes and foxes killing the just born pigs? Especially during farrowing when the sow cannot fend them off.

I am wondering will the woods and 2X4 be saturated? since it is not waterproof with all those woods?
Not a factor.
@@FarmBuilder sorry, I am not getting it? So it is safe from water?
Great video. Thos shelter were a lot of work but i bet they helped a lot. How often to you breed the pigs? And do you have one mail pig for breeding?
Thanks! We breed to two farrowings a year. We have 8 different boars at the moment.
I would love to see some plans for your shelters. Is your website up yet?

What keeps predators away from the baby's ...?
600 lb momma with teeth!

How do you keep them in the paddock? Is the paddock hotwired?
that's explained in the previous video "Part 1"
how do you tell if your pig is pregnate
+Michael Gutierrez you can watch out for a recycle, have a vet ultrasound her or wait 3 months after the boar went in!
HI what is the size of the farrowing boxes

New to the channel... do you AI or do you keep boars?
Boars. They do the deed with pleasure.
I guess the sisters will need a semi-detached shelter with no party wall ;)
Gostei, vou implantar esse sistema de casas pras porcas aqui no sítio. Parabéns. 👍🇧🇷
What are mummies?
Half developed piglets that died in utero.
Do you ever assist with the actual birthing process?
If needed of course.
may i ask how large the pasture is that the gilts are on ?
each paddock is roughly 1/3 - 1/2 acre. Under normal conditions they are moving every 7-10 days. When farrowing though its about 3 weeks or whenever the piglets are ready to walk over to the new area.
