    This is Cindy, a completely broken and terrified dog we just rescued, she's so scared, we struggle to even get her into the house.
    She's going to be meeting our two dogs, our golden retriever Kobe and our doberman Moki, how will a dog this terrified react to them?

    I kid you not, my girl from a Romanian kill shelter who spent the first 4 years of her life on the streets was far worse than this. And she was so skinny it was hard to believe she was still alive and I've never seen any creature so utterly mentally broken, bless her wee heart. 4 years on and she's doing great now though. 😊

      Mine too. We gave him a duvet covered crate with door open and back door open to a small courtyard. Took over 2 weeks to just touch him and he froze and licked his lips. No TV, hair dryer, washing machine or visitors, took months to actually stroke and handle him.

    Animal welfare professional here 👋🏼
    Just FYI, dogs (and most all animals) *hate* the smell of citronella. It’s very offensive to their highly sensitive sense of smell and is more likely to work as a deterrent when trying to encourage her to eliminate on the pee pads. It obstructs her sense of smell, which is the opposite of what you want for any new dog, but especially a fearful dog, as it impedes their ability to gain a better sense of their surroundings/decompress/feel safe in a new environment (to boot, one with other animals).
    Imagine, trying to feel comfortable in a stressful, new situation, but all you can focus on is the putrid stench of ____ (ie; freshly sprayed skunk, rotten fish, ammonia, etc) in the area you’re meant to feel most secure.
    It can even cause adverse behavioral effects, if it becomes too overpowering or irritating to them - which doesn’t take much considering their noses are up to 100,000x’s stronger than ours.
    I would definitely advise against using anything like that going forward just because it works more against you, rather than for you in these situations and it genuinely seems like you’re trying to make her as comfortable as possible otherwise.

    • @FurnitureFan
      @FurnitureFan Month ago +125

      Many thanks for your advice. I love citrus candles & had to stop having them in the living room because our dog wasn't happy with the scent.
      There's another spray called Neutradol, and maybe that would help without being lemony?

    • @moviebuff6924
      @moviebuff6924 Month ago +65

      @FurnitureFan There are enzyme-based pet mess cleaners specifically for this purpose. Any good pet supply store should sell them. The enzymes do all the work of removing the smell without leaving ammonia smell, because to cats and dogs ammonia smells like urine and only encourages more using of that spot as a toilet. I realize you had a non-urine related problem, but it should still work the same way.

    You NEED to let her find her own spot in the flat. Then set her up (bed, blanket, water/food bowls) where ever she picks. Then leave her alone to DECOMPRESS.
    Your Golden will be the one to help her, not humans. When she starts to venture away from her SAFE space, then you can greet her. My Dasher was worse than her. It is a slow road to recovery.

    I have a little Romanian rescue thru Barking Mad Dog Rescue. She was handed over to me covered in vomit, trembling in fear from her three day trip to the UK by a lovely and apologetic van driver..😍
    I put her in an armchair and just let her be. I wasn't fortunate enough to have a resident pooch to help out.
    After 24 hours she broke out of her shell, ate and drank and I just let her wander the house and garden.
    Within a week she was beginning to chill.
    She'll never be a go-getter, but she's confident with dogs and people, adores her immediate family and is living her best life.
    Calm surroundings and no misplaced pity for terrified behaviour is the way to go.
    Good job, everyone!

      I have two Romanian rescues, two sisters. Yuna was trying to connect after maybe a week, and by that I mean she would look at us from a distance and wag her tail and when I sat somewhere she would slowly crawl towards me. Noor it was within a day that she would just sit next to me but it took almost 2 months for her to not be terrified of my parents. I would just sit on the ground and read whatever news I found on my phone and not look at them and that really helped. We've now had them for 7 years and they still get panic attacks and we still find triggers (like shining a flashlight towards them in the dark, or whistling). A little while ago hunters were shooting deer and they smelled the gunpowder and completely panicked, I don't even want to know what experience they've had with that

      I’d have taken her with the harness into the house and put her on the dog bed/crate.
      It’s like ripping the bandaid off.
      Afterwards I’d have closed the door and let her decompress.
      Also, dogs don’t generally pooh after eating. It’s usually around 2 -3 hours.

    I think these folks really mean well, but I think they misunderstood her body language at the beginning with the car ride. I think she puked and was drooling because she got car sick, not from stress. Our dogs have always done the same. If you give her some water and let her stand outside for a bit, she'll be fine in a few minutes to an hour.
    I think it's great what you guys are doing though! Thank you for putting in the work to save these animals and improve their lives =]

      @iymdisshe came from a horse farm. She is half Rottweiler and half cane corso. They dumped her at a shelter and she sat there six months. She wouldn't bond with anyone. Thats why we took her out of there. Not many people want a dog like that. She wasn't even two and was very thin. She opened up to me immediately but took some time for my husband. She is now 103 pounds of pure puppy joy. Lives to play with toys and having her ball thrown over and over. I love her dearly. I can only guess that she was not treated very well. I think it was probably a male that did it.

      @nifflofair6685 It's true, unfortunately old people teach young people that dogs are just animals. There are few who don't learn that dogs/cats are pets that are there to help us, to be our friends, or to be members of our family. If we look at pets like that, unfortunately they think that something is wrong with us. But there are certainly a lot of better people who help, as well as the organization❤

      It might not be on topic, but when I watched the above video via Google there was an add every 3 minutes,
      Then I copied the URL and opened Brave, then pasted the URL in its search bar. No adds.
      In Brave under Settings > Shields > Trackers & ads blocking, one can choose Standard and there will be no interruptions for an add in the video. Settings appears by tapping on the 3 horizontal bars in the top right corner.

      Some times you just don't know. It's not like they can tell us. Our dog has some sort of PTSD and missing It's front leg. All we know is the dog was found in a dich with a terrible wound requiring an amputation.

      I think it can just be personality to a certain degree. I have an 18 year old cat who we have had since he was 6 weeks old. He was part of a family of kittens found in a warehouse. Nothing scary had ever happened to him, but he has hidden from everyone except my husband and I his whole life. With us he is a purr monster and just wants to be stroked and tickled 24 hours a day. In the last year he has become deaf and yesterday came down for a tickle from our cleaner! A previous cleaner was with us for three years and she never saw him except when she Hoovered under the bed when he would hiss at her.

      We adopted a dog just like that 2 years ago. If they have been street dogs, they lived a life opposite to being indoors and close to humans and are as confused as they can be and have never learnt to trust a human. It is a slow process. 😊

    • @katharineastley290
      @katharineastley290 Month ago +2

      @golfo5057she wasn't a rescue, we've had her since she was 12 weeks old, her brother is an absolute delight, loves everyone and everything, her and her sister are just the opposite, hates the outside world. She's gotten better slowly, if she was to be put into a kennel situation or rehomed, she'd be the exact same as the dog in this video, although she's always been treated well. She's absolutely fine in her home, don't get me wrong, shes a delight, but outside where there's people and noises she doesnt know she can shut down

    Such a sweet girl. With my nervous or shut-down rescues, I try to keep things calm and have little interaction; let her set the pace, especially the first few days. You can also drop a treat in front of her several times a day and walk away. No eye contact, no talking; no pressure. This often results in her looking forward to seeing you.
    I hope this helps. Dogs are very sensitive to how we're feeling, so I try to be matter-of-fact about interactions. You two are doing such a good thing. I can't wait for the next update! ❤

    I had a dog like this, it took her almost 2 weeks before she'd let me pet her. I eventually just sat next to her crate and read for a few hours and she came out to meet me. It took her years but she eventually recovered. It's a long process but it was the most rewarding experience I've ever had with a dog

    3:30 --> You're trying to get her to go inside a house that smells strongly of dogs she *doesn't know* . I'd have arranged for one of yours to meet her outside, let them sniff, then come indoors together.

      A dog like that needs to be with one person. No other animals or people, it needs to be quiet in the house, lights need to be dimmed; for as well intentioned as these people are, the poor dog is getting sensory overload on top of her trauma.

    Thank you for rescuing Cindy! Remember Dogs have a great sense of smell-thus they're very sensitive to intense/highly aromatic odors. Ok to disinfect the area but you must do a water rinse/wipe down afterwards. That's an intense smell right next to her and may cause her to avoid the area.
