- With a wealth of picks, and young players like Juraj Slafkovsky, Kaiden Guhle and Samuel Montembeault proving they are good NHL players, is the time now for the Habs to shift their focus from rebuilding to winning? Mike Johnson and Craig Button discuss.

The Habs need to put together an effective 2nd line but even more importantly they have to fix their defensive structure.
Hughes has been open about 2025-26 being the season where he wants the team to start competing...
Suzuki and Caufield will have requested trades by then lol

@@Kevin-qg2vs suzuki and caufield tasted a Stanley final with the CH, they both signed long terme with the CH. They know they are the core of the franchise at the moment. No reason to drop that when we have so much prospects to help them in the near future.
@@Kevin-qg2vs Both guys are locked for the next 8 years on team friendly contracts, and are the Habs main core offensive producers that the new management are trying to build around. Stop talking out of your ass thinking they'll ask to get traded.

Disagree with Button as usual - we have Lane Hutson and David Reinbacher who will need time to develop. We need Kirby Dach to have a full season and we need Alex Newhook to develop some chemistry with someone. We need Joshua Roy and Owen Beck to take further strides in their development. We need to see if Florian Xhekaj is having a unicorn season or if he's the real deal. What we do NOT need is the pressure of winning on all these young players in the city of Montreal NOW.

Yea Lane is definitely 1st, don’t think anyone thinks otherwise. Pretty sure he just had Roy there because he has some NHL experience now.

I agree, I think Montreal next year can compete for a wild card spot. The team took big strides this year, unfortunately, players like Dach and Newhook have missed time, but I believe another year under their belt and continuing to learn how to win in this league has been super beneficial to the team's overall development and I think they are on the right path. What is hurting the team is their cap, they have players who don't play up to their contract and are quiet frankly pulling the team down

@@Whatdoingdog44Stats don't always tell the whole story. Yeah sure, statistically this season Habs right now are one of the bottom 10 teams of the league. Mainly due to dealing with injuries yet again, some veteran guys who are underperforming, and having to deal with a 3 goalie system throughout the year. But despite all that, the Habs as a whole have significantly improved compared to last season in terms of performance. This year they've competed harder and keep games close for the most part against the top teams in the league, which has been more entertaining to watch, and the younger players development seems to be moving in the right direction. If the Habs can build a solid 2nd line with a better balanced bottom 6 compared to what they have currently, and continue to strengthen the team defensive coverage, I don't see why the Habs can't compete for a playoff spot in the near future?
@@Whatdoingdog44 no doubts the stats are awful, I can agree on that, I am looking at the improvements from the start of the year where let's be honest were a lot worse than they are now. The PowerPlay has improved, the PK has improved and 5v5 is much better than it was at the start of the year. Also doesnt help having a 3 goalie rotation with mid goaltending at best. Montreal also has if Im not mistaken, gone to overtime the most in the NHL this season. They are far away from making the playoffs in their division, but that second wild card is the one I would be aiming for next season. Like they mentioned in the video, they have a ton of draft picks and a deep prospect pool so its time to move those pieces and start bringing in players who will contribute and strengthen the weak points of the team.
As a long time fan of the Bleu-Blanc-Rouge, who by the way thought that they should have been in a rebuild mode as far back as the 1990s, this season is going like I expected. Within reach of the playoffs for part of this season, but fading in February. It started happening late in January . They should use the rest of this season to improve defensively, and have at least the resemblance of secondary scoring line. Losing Dach as early as they lost sure put a monkey wrench inyo things.

We need 2 perfect and 1 solidly competitive lines. We have one perfect yet. We have to start to use prospects in the NHL.

I think the habs could make the playoffs this season, nevermind the next one. It would be hard to reach, but it is well within the realm of possibility to do it. They won't get past the first round, but it will turn heads around the league andgive a morale boost to the team, letting the current roster know that they can get there.
Next year they can easily make a playoff appearance....gunna need a d man though to help out these young guys....could a Ryan McDonagh be interested alongside of a Sarros can be very interesting. Nsh needs to cash in now during this retool of theirs....having 2 top 15 picks is huge... having McDonagh and Matheson sounds like a top pair to me...
After all, we are le Canadiens de Montréal, the best and most presitigious franchise in the sport. Every other fanbase = kneel.
They should be a playoff in 2-3 years
We can't make a lot of progress signing new players until we can get rid of our bad contracts. Gally, Anderson, and Armia. We have 16 million tied up in these 3 low return contracts. Hughes doesn't like to give players away for zero but he should with these players. We cannot bring up prospects, or sign some high-end talent, until these players are off the books. I would love to see Hughes and Gorton solve this problem asap, even though it will be hard to do.

Montreal has to trade for a guy like Draisaitl/Pettersson. I see at top 6 of: Suzuki,Caufield,Slaf, Celebrini,( Montreal has the assets to move up), Drisaitl/Pettersson, Dach/Newhook. That’s deadly. But for now, let’s hope that Fowler turns out to be our #1 goalie. With Monty the backup.
The answer is a simple one...focus on winning NEXT year, after this springs draft.

They have a host of players they need to get rid of, bring up the young players they want on the team long term, and pick up some scorers either by trade or free agency like perhaps a Sam Reinhart. Either way the holding on to guys to get the best deal situation is getting old and I agree the time is now to start splashing around in the pool.
If the Habs can land Celebrini or Cayden Lindstrom I think they’ll be ready to compete by 2025-2026. Their top 4 D pairing will be Guhle, Reinbacher, Hutson and Mailloux who all have great upside and their top 6 with Suzuki and Celebrini/Lindstrom up the middle with a matured Slafkovsky and hopefully Kirby Dach getting over his injuries has the potential to be unreal in 2 years. The only area of question is goaltending but they’ve got some promising prospects. They just have to get rid of the bad contracts somehow (Gallagher/Anderson etc)
I don't think gally is going anywhere, to big a contract and too old of a player. Anderson is more doable if money is retained. But I agree a whole host of players need to be removed first.

Not next season. Season after (25/26) is when they should be ready to make the playoffs, if not necessarily contend.
They better compete for a wildcard spot next year
Next year, compete for playoffs. In 2 years, compete for Division/Conference. In 3 years, compete for the cup for at least 3 years. You don't want your players to all reach free agency at the same time. You CAN compete for a Stanley Cup with a couple of sophomores and rookies. Maybe, displace plan for one year, but you surely need to stop tanking as soon as next year, I hope.
Roy ranked above Hutson is insane
Defense and goaltending are too inconsistent. Too many games lost to injury, which affects the consistency.
They need a solid 1A goalie (Monty and Primeau are 1B at best). They have young talent still in the AHL and NCAA and need 2 - 3 years in the NHL to develop. The current #1 line will have 3 - 4 years of playing together at the point when all of the other pieces will be ready AND they will be rid of the putrid Bergevin contracts that will allow them to sign 2 or 3 key free agents to fill key gaps and get them into the conference finals for a 4 - 5 year stretch.
Most important immediate acquisition is a training staff to keep them fit and healthy otherwise they will never contend.
Habs need a vet like a better version of Monahan that can bang good at faceoffs that could move anywhere in the line up guy like Trocheck and let the kids do the scoring. Fill the team with grinders and power fowards and rely on young prospect to score

They should wait. Winning in the NHL these days requires to have as many players in their prime as possible, which means wait until the core players are the veterans in the locker room
I disagree with Craig. The sheer numbers of picks alone, plus the current prospects that will be nhl ready next season, and the following season after that, and the current young core brings an exciting opportunity to build a dynasty. I'd rather see the Habs miss the playoffs next year but then make them non wild card for 5-6 straight years, instead of sacrificing part of the core to be a wild card next year and then miss them again.

This is a terrible take by Button (though that is not surprising). Competing for a playoff spot next year is NOT music to Habs fans' ears. We want to compete for cups, not playoff spots, and are more than willing to wait a couple more years before we start investing in the present. Does Button seriously think that sending away draft picks for players in their prime now would turn us into cup contenders? That is absolutely ridiculous.
