He was the bridge from the old jazz world to the progressive rock world. This composition for drum set stands as a fully realised but also evolving musical piece.
Unlike many drum solos, this performance of Toad is so well-structured. Ginger Baker wasn't rambling aimlessly. Whenever I listen to this, I listen to it in full and it is so well-crafted. Love it. My favourite drum solo ever tied with Mitch Mitchell's drum solo during Moon, Turn The Tides... Gently Gently Away.
Flow state drummer ....it just sounds effortless...and so naturally talented. You can absolutely tell he has the natural feel for the drums. Damn near a superpower!
Ginger Baker, I lOVED YOUR DRUMMING!! You will always remain alive and well to me in sprit. coming out of my speakers.. Out of all the great drum solos I've heard by all the great players over the years this is THE BEST and my favorite. I can definitely lose myself in this.
One of Ginger's longest solo's. Makes me wonder if this is what gave Pink Floyd the idea of a long electronic solo at a concert and roger & others sat at the end of the stage playing cards. I was 17 watching this live. At 70, listening to it on a computer. Sure like to see it again with my eyes instead of my memory.
3:48- 5:35 is Ginger’s finest moment as a drummer in my humble opinion. Incredibly complicated rhythms between his snare & bass drum while keeping his hi hat steady on the off beat
enorbet2 Sad but true. Luckily I got to see them live in 1968 at the Anaheim Convention Center across from Disneyland. I was 18 & only lived a few miles away. They did Toad and it sounded almost exactly like this version. The opening act was a new group called Three Dog Night. WHAT A CONCERT!!!
Best drum solo EVER. Noone on earth ever could or ever will compare to him. Coked and speeded out of his mind but thats beside the point ! If you dont get the goosebumps in the last 2-3 min. of this song , u have no emotions in your body !
Would never have guessed he would outlive Jack Bruce by five years. Ginger Baker & Keith Moon - the saltiest dogs in rock'n'roll. They gave their all, because after all, a concert cost $4 dollars back then.
@@greglawrencemusic No.....he was always more or less soloing. The goldfish solo is awful. I think Moonie should have joined a surf band and played "Wipe Out". Cobwebs and Strange is all we got.
My friend turned me on to this album in the late '60s. I was about 13 but this drum solo completely captivated me. It's what made me want to play drums; took lessons for a little while...

Ginger Baker is THE CLEANEST & ONE of the greatest drummers of all time. No gimmicks or double pedals... all syncopated with speed, accuracy & stamina ❤
Peter Ginger Baker, a ..? Him, his style, and a Ludwig kit... It's amazing what 12 drummers can do together. No! Wait! it's just one man.
True. Sounds like more than one drummer.

A lot of afro polyrhythm influences here. Wonderful and so musical.

RIP Ginger,
Toad was the precursor of all drum solos so God bless you.

This isn't just a drum solo. It is a composition for traps. it stands unique versus every other drum solo.
jaspernatchez okok my friend ..drummer !!!!!
FANTASTIC....!!!
Call me an idiot but I love the royal albert hall one and the farewell concert one just as much
I agree. This solo is a composition. Not just a display of lightening fast rudiments. Ginger Baker is taking us on a journey.
That's a fact! Truly a drumset composition of the highest order!!!
The greatest drummer of them all.
Ginger Baker was so talented! His technique was flawless, and I love the almost "tribal" sound of this solo.
One of Ginger's longest solo's. Makes me wonder if this is what gave Pink Floyd the idea of a long electronic solo at a concert and roger & others sat at the end of the stage playing cards. Les Cream.... Le meilleur guitariste, le meilleurs bassiste et le meilleur batteur du monde ...Ma jeunesse !!!
Watched a live gig in 1967, Eric and Jack wandered off stage for ten minutes. Came back on and played the last few chords - immense 😮
I heard Erics live tone would go up your spine so jealous
One of my favorite drum solos. It's obviously well-composed but *also* gloriously improvisational. Thank you, Ginger.
R.I.P Ginger, you were the best.
Thanks for the amazing drum solo, Ginger. You were truly a wonder.
Ginger, we miss you already !!!!!
MASTER OF THE DOUBLE BASS!!!
3:48- 5:35 is Ginger’s finest moment as a drummer in my humble opinion. Incredibly complicated rhythms between his snare & bass drum while keeping his hi hat steady on the off beat
And he holds the tempo at a steady 139 Bpm throughout that section.
That drum solo by Ginger Baker was amazing!

The buildup is crazy psychedelic
And he loved the cocktail of LSD cocaine and heroin in a shot 💉

You can't divorce the two styles of music.

Jack Bruce was the best bassist ever
WHO WAS AT THIS SHOW ?!
Greatest drummer of all time followed by Danny Carey and John Bonham.
Sorry Bonzo. I love you, but Mr. Baker is the man. This puts any version of Moby Dick to shame.
In reply to Struska, still has a long way to go to beat BONHAM.
Bonham studied Baker and could only get close. :) but he was still "Bad John"
Ya know, it's almost like comparing John Entwistle to Jack Bruce.
I know it can be hard to do but: stop comparing. It usually triggers arguments. Just take it all in and enjoy.
