@@katchibediako7036 Probably because it's nothing to do with American history as Gannibal lived in Russia. I assume most countries don't teach much about other countries history if it has nothing to do with their own country or doesn't follow the major world defining events of history.
Another crucial contribution of Gannibal is not mentioned The recruitment and enlistment of Generalismmo Alexander Vasiliyevich Suvorov into the Russian military. The young Suvorov was frail and weak, and taunted by his father (A Russian General) and family friends (Russian nobility, military officers) that a military career was not cut out for the young lad. One day the young Suvorovs intense arguments with his father who refused to let him enlist brought him the attention of Gannibal who lived nearby. After conversing and finding an affinity with the young Suvorov, Gannibal convinced Suvorov senior and thus begins the career of one of Russia’s and indeed the Worlds greatest Captains of War Suvorov went on to fight 70 battles and win all of them, the latter battles were fought against the French Army just prior to Napoleons reign.
Minor correction; Suvorov didn't win all of his battles, but he was never defeated. Which is still an insane record to have. The fact that Gannibal, a fascinating character in his own right, is also linked to Suvorov, arguably the best military commander in history, is just about as cool as it gets.

Man this guy was insanely well traveled. Not many men in his time can claim to have lived in Sub-Saharan Africa, the depths of Siberia and two imperial courts and Paris.
When you dig a little bit deeper you will find out that blacks is already there and Europe before the Moors came the Moors came to Europe to Enlighten the black Christians that lost a way to provide services to the black sultan which is white gold which is white women white was slaves all the way to the the Ottoman Empire got whooped it you just have to dig a little bit deeper it don't accept the hijack and deception like one of for instance that Queen Charlotte when the only black queen in Europe mostly all the Queens in Europe was black I have proof so don't go for the hijack
In France, we have the same kind of family : lord Pailleté was the French father of général Dumas (a mulato, born from his black concubine). Dumas served alongside, and under Napoléon Bonaparte. Then Dumas had a son : Alexandre Dumas, who wrote The Three Musketeers ("les trois mousquetaires"). Alexandre Dumas's son, also named Alexandre (in french, we say "Dumas-father" and "Dumas-son" to distinguish them), was a famous writer too. =)
I recently read "The Black Count". It was so chocked full of historical information about General Dumas, France and Haiti. Very good book to read about his life.
Aaron Sochaczweski swinging from trees lol we taught y’all hygiene and so much more. By the time white people stumbled off the Caucasus mountain we had already built empires don’t fool yourself
@Alex F It all comes down to societal views, as race is constructed depending on the culture. You can't really compare 19th-Century Russian views on race to American views. Hypo-descent was (and still is, to a degree) huge in Anglo-America, particularly where slavery was rampant, and having just a "bit" of African descent would designate you as part of the black underclass. Even racially-mixed people who looked white were still labelled and discriminated against in the South. In Southern Laws all the way up to the 1960s, Pushkin would be considered an Octoroon/negro and be treated as such. Also a fun fact: Homer Plessy of Plessy v Fergusson fame was just as black as Pushkin.
@@BifronsCandle except for colonal French Louisiana where mix race people was considered another race.. as a matter of fact the one drop rule was created after slavery! During slavery it really dint exist. That's why many people say that black confederates exist, of course they was mulatos who did not see themselves as "black".. krazy huh?? Lol
Kujo's Vision That’s the stupidest comment I’ve read today. I’m black like you and my blackness comes from the fact that my ancestors came from AFRICA. You can deny being African all you want but if you have any noticeable amount of melanin in your skin, it comes from Africa. But you can and should keep deluding yourself like that, us African-Americans do not need another self-hating person in our midst.
I wouldn't have been surprised if he actually fathered a black child, given that Peter was notorious for sleeping around, and made no attempt at concealing it.
Wow instead honoring the acheivements of this great man, or even dare to be inspired you all make trifling and incredibly stupid comments. Congradulations on missing the point of this important piece of history.
Not surprising that Peter elevated an African to such heights, considering he himself married a literal random peasant woman despite basically everyone in Russia being against it. The guy did whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted.
6:16 The "imposing red walls of the Kremlin" were probably not red at that time, because from the 1680s until the end of the 19 century the walls were painted white, although some towers remained red.
You forgot an important addendum to Gabbila’s story - his neighbor son was sickly but wanted to join the military. Gannibal encouraged and helped him. That boy became the most celebrated general in Czarist Russia - Generalisimo Suvorov (who also trained General Kutuzov, my ancestor, who defeated Napoleon’s Russian campaign)
@@MaxGogleMogle I don't know where that dude comes from, but I can say that he is right, our history before the first proto-statehood of Rus was acquired essentially began with the fact that we had to migrate to the northeast from central Europe due to the invasion of the Huns and then have constant conflicts with all our neighbors
As a fan of history, I'd never heard of Gannibal. I am glad to say I thoroughly enjoyed this video, and learned about someone completely new to me which was an absolute delight. I look forward to more videos highlighting ingenious individuals from history.

I find these kind of stories on this channel particularly interesting: An African playing an important role in Russian politics of the 18th century, an English or African Samurai or Greek states in modern day Afghanistan and India. Things that you rarely hear about and that sound too ridiculous to believe once you hear them.
It's only ridiculous if you've been taught a history that didn't include people of color and is told from the vantage point of people who have a lot to hide in order to maintain a false status of genetic superiority.

No wonder, the entire aristocracy was repeatedly related. Pushkin's great-grandmother on the father's side and Leo Tolstoy's great-great-grandmother on the mother's side were sisters. Pushkin's maternal grandmother also had the surname Pushkin in her maiden name. etc. You can find many more family ties.
He did not have several wives... but two; one was an arranged marriage which was broken after his wife gave birth to a white child(adultery) the other was a happy marriage with 10 kids
@@REgamesplayer extreme success is a mixture of hard work and luck. You have to put yourself in a position where you can get lucky and become successful. Hannibal worked hard his whole life and he also got extremely lucky simultaneously.
@@REgamesplayer Bill gates started with a garage. Gannibal started with less than nothing and got lucky while working hard simultaneously. Napoleon wouldn't have been half the legend if he had just chosen to use his inheritance to rot in bars and brothels and go on prodigal sprees. Almost all people who are born as lucky as Napoleon are now forgotten. Again, I am not saying no luck is involved, but that there is an equal or larger measure of hard work.
@@REgamesplayer I am pretty sure we agree. It requires both luck and skill. Without all those opportunities they probably wouldn't be where they are, but at the same time, if you gave me all the opportunities Napoleon had I wouldn't become Napoleon. Extreme success is when hard work meets opportunity. Gannibal could have just not payed attention and not chosen to learn and maybe he would have just gone back to being a slave boy. In other words we agree. It requires hard work combined with the opportunity of which you speak.
This is the third story so far on kings and Generals depicting a black person who rose to historical prominence far away from Africa. I have so far not found no other historically devoted youtube channel present even one such a character. K&G is also excellent otherwise, but this adds some extra flavor. Keep up the good work guys and I hope to see more of this!
There was also an Caribbean-Bonapartist named Thomas-Alexandre Dumas but the French were always enlightened like that. He was also the father of Alexandre Dumas of the Three Musketeer & Count of Monte Cristo fame.
Well this is a Russian way of naming. It usually indicates your father. For example. Peter's son could be Ivan Petrovich and his son could be Vladimir Ivanovich. Peter the great was his god-father thus it would be logical that he has the middle name Petrovich.
@Peter Langley I am not an expert either, but I would say it can be viewed that way. Although the Norse way of doing it affects your last name, but the Russian naming system lets you keep your family name because -vich or -vna part is a middle name.
What a truly extraordinary man; I can hardly believe I had never even heard of him before. This is exactly the sort of awesome content I am subscribed for!
The city of Algiers in Algeria had about a million white slaves at one point owned by north African black Berbers. From as far afield as Britain and I've even heard that they have made forays into Newfoundland, in Canada. Slavery was not only a black phenomenon.
We learned about this man at school in Russia, mainly because he was the great-grandfather of Alexandr Pushkin (the father of the modern Russian language and literature). But I never knew the details of his life. Thank you very much for the fascinating video! 👍
Considering that there are stories like this that exist in history. I don't understand why Hollywood has to force diversity in historical movies and series even though no such diversity existed in that time period.
The Soviets made a movie about Gannibal - he was played by a white guy in blackface. The make-up is so unconvincing too that you'd just think he was a Russian with a dark tan.
Peter the Great: "Hey bro, can I copy your answers on the birth certificate?" Hamilcar Barca: "Sure, but change it just enough that nobody gets suspicious." Peter the Great:

@@aidansumner8364 eh. I really don't think we talking about a research enthusiastic group. We're in still the aftermath of the riots about a black roman soldier in a documentary, despite that character being based on a real black roman soldier stationed in britain. If you inspect history closely you will notice a pattern of rulers employing gifted foreigners such as Pargalı Ibrahim Pasha, Gannibal Petrovich, Eugene of Savoy, Yasuke, Harald Hardrada, El Cid, etc.. In my opinion there are 3 reasons for this: 1. These people were all talented leaders. A good ruler always appoint the most talented personal. 2. These people were not members of the established aristocratic families. They didn't "inherit" centuries old feuds. They didn't resort to nepotism. 3. They owed everything they had to the ruler who elevated them into position, so their loyalties were guranteed. (ofc some of them betrayed their masters)
After everything black people did for non-blacks, y'all ancestors still betrayed my people in the most inhumane ways, and hide our history culture/identity/language etc. because your ancestors wanted to be seen as superior. Every nation that greedily reap from my ancestors, shall be reaped by the most High God as well. My people destroyed themselves, and are still destroying themselves and bloodlines to be liked by other nations on this earth. My ancestors and people were taught to build for others, give, be nice, but to turn our backs on our own. This was caused by the degradation of my people's minds for generation after generation. We can read now, but many still choose not to obtain knowledge about themselves and look to the Wicked media for their false identity/culture.. Sad smh
Even in reading the BIble, you see this as well that captive Jews/Hebrews would be placed among the highest officials and serve their new king. Yet for the commoners it may not be the same way they looked at the captives, they might still see them as the slaves and the ones captured by THEIR military.
I believe you've got an anachronism at 6:21: Moscow Kremlin wasn't always red, it was white at the time which is confirmed by paintings from this period. Upd: The fortress on the image at 11:30 is of another fortress built a century later. You've got an image of an Alexander Fortress, the other fortress which Gannibal wight've worked on is called Kronshlot. I'm not a historian, it just felt off. Really interesting episode though!
@@Overlord734 Most fotresses in Russia were build with bricks and painted white. I'm not a historian and I don't have evidence of Kremlin being white at this time, but usually it's considered being white, like it's presented on the painting "Morning of the Execution of Streltsy" where it has this washed out look with a hint of red brick underneath.
@@paulkoulikov no, white Kremlin was a different fortress, built of white (gray) stone. It lasted from XIV to XV century. Ivan III invited Renaissance Italian architects to reconstruct a fortress and they build red Kremlin. If you look at the Kremlin walls, they look similar to the walls of Italian fortresses of the period.
Teo Danko You’re right that’s how it was built. At least in 19th century it was white, and that’s the time when we get most of our pictures of it from. So it’s assumed that for the most it’s history it was white like other brick fortresses. Another thing that adds to confusion is that word “Red” also meant “pretty” in those times.
If you start running out of these stories of historical figures of African descent in unexpected places you could look up Polish nobleman and general Władysław Franciszek Jabłonowski "Murzynek". Also, regarding the XVIII century military engineers with interesting lives and careers, you could probably make a whole series about Tadeusz Kościuszko (like the ones about Tecumseh or Cochrane). Interestingly Kościuszko's story also has some little-known elements linking it with the "Black History", like his abolitionist views and the issue of his unrealized last will, the person of Agrippa Hull who served under him during the American Revolution or his butler Jean Lapierre (the aforementioned Jabłonowski was also his subordinate).
@@stormbringer2840 Oh yes, Dumas absolutely deserves a video. Chevalier de Saint-Georges (Joseph Bologne) would be cool too, even if covering him would be a bit of departure from the military theme. i find it amazing that pushkin who is considered to be one of the greatest poets and novelist has a striking ressemblance to Alexandre Dumas in France in terms of career and ancestry. Alexandre Dumas, son of a mix General(considered to be one of the greatest general with Bonaparte) was one the best novelist and poets in France and had a son also called Alexandre Dumas who was as brilliant as the father
There is even a ridiculous conspiracy theory that Pushkin WAS in fact Dumas, i.e. he faked his death in the duel, escaped Russia for France, assumed the identity of a half-African French guy of about the same age, and kept on writing novels in French (as a Russian aristocrat of the time, of course Pushkin spoke French at a native level). This is a joke, of course; I don't think even people who had invented it, believed in it seriously. But the facial semblance of the two authors is striking, and the first Dumas' novels started to appear not long after Pushkin died, so who knows…

Ultimately, it can be said that Gannibal truly triumphed over his enemies, as his name and memory live on, while they lie forgotten. Truly he is amongst the most fascinating lives I’ve ever had to pleasure to research.
That Moment! 8:19 :D a great video showing the fascinating human side of the History. I am glad to live in a time where this channel is opening the eyes of many and constantly keeping up the good work. Well done!
The career of Gannibal in Russia reminds me of another black person who made waves in eighteenth century Europe but in the field of classical music -this was the chevaliar de Saint-George was was a son of a French landowner and one of his African slaves. His father ensured he had a full education in all fields and besides music he was a top archer as well.Saint-George was born on the French caribean island of Guadeloupe and made a big mark on late eighteenth century European music -influencing even such top figures as Haydn and Mozart. He did of course come across a lot of racism especially when he was appointed head of the Paris opera when some of the sopranos there were indignant that there boss was a black man.
Champ, you mentioned my favoriteblack historical character, Josef Boulounge, The C hevalier de Saint George who was the greatest swordsman in France not an archer. The nobility learned fencing or sword fighting, lower classmen were archers. Saint George was also the greatest violinist in France as well. And a great poet, equestrian, ice skater and is written about as the quintissential Frenchman of his day I have researched his life a little as well as Jean Louis a slave or poor black boy who became the greatest swordsman after Saint George, survived the Revlution, opened his fencing training school where his status allowed him to prosper as instructor to nobility. I learned of these people when I was a kid reading my fathers library which included volumes from the Journal of Negro History which was published between about 1909 to about 1970. One of these days I'm gonna immerse myself in in FR. REV. history, wear the 3 corner hat the tight pants, short waistcoat and prance around with my nose high up in the air, and get non historical by wearing cowboy boots!! Hey there were horsemen weren't they???!!
@@douglasrobertson1330 Thanks for correcting my mistake that he was a swordsman not an archer -I saw a documentary about him about 20 years ago and some of the details of his life have become a little fuzzy.
@nathan smith You say but it applies to all ethnicity and nationalities, why do many French people idolise Napoleon so much he is long dead and the ideas he advocated have become commonplace long before they were born? It is not strange for people to venerate people they feel they have some sort of connection with. The thing is no race is a monolith and should not be treated as such after all it is not so long ago many did not consider Italians or Irish people truly white.
@Knee Grow You know if actually paid attention to your history books and not cherry pick. You'd know that at the time of the Ottoman empire. Many Europeans especially protestants preferred living under Ottoman rule as opposed to the Habsburgs because you know, the Habsburgs brutally persecuted protestant minorities in Europe. You would also know that during the 2nd siege of Vienna. The Ottoman invasion had a considerable amount of protestant VOLUNTEERS. Claiming that the Ottomans were a vile and evil empire is as asinine and ignorant as claiming that only white people get dementia.

Another crucial contribution of Gannibal is not mentioned
The recruitment and enlistment of Generalismmo Alexander Vasiliyevich Suvorov into the Russian military.
After conversing and finding an affinity with the young Suvorov, Gannibal convinced Suvorov senior and thus begins the career of one of Russia’s and indeed the Worlds greatest Captains of War
Suvorov went on to fight 70 battles and win all of them, the latter battles were fought against the French Army just prior to Napoleons reign.

Hypo-descent was (and still is, to a degree) huge in Anglo-America, particularly where slavery was rampant, and having just a "bit" of African descent would designate you as part of the black underclass. Even racially-mixed people who looked white were still labelled and discriminated against in the South.

Did Alexandre Dumas liked to kill husbands of womans which he seduced?
There is even a ridiculous conspiracy theory that Pushkin WAS in fact Dumas, i.e. he faked his death in the duel, escaped Russia for France, assumed the identity of a half-African French guy of about the same age, and kept on writing novels in French (as a Russian aristocrat of the time, of course Pushkin spoke French at a native level). This is a joke, of course; I don't think even people who had invented it, believed in it seriously. @@TheTranceCartel yeah but at the same time your nation is incredibly racist towards other non white russians. If he wasnt a great grandfather of Pushkin you would think otherwise no?
Why wouldn't the Russians be proud of this side of their history?

Really awesome vid! Loved the one about Yasuke, so this was a nice treat :)
Incredible, I've never heard of this account before, in all my historical research involving Tsar Peter, though I've mostly read on his military ventures and mainly on the Great Northern War as a Swede myself, so maybe it isn't all too strange this has bypassed me. I can't believe this hasn't become a film or series yet!
Why did my history teacher never mention any of these incredible history. Well presented & thank u 4 taking time & sharing. Be blessed.
Cause the history you learning in school not a History, World History, or History of Society Evolution. It's actually "History of your country" and "Historical world dates and people names which you could hear later anyway", just opinion of government or Propaganda. You literally must not know anything about world that doesn't support you country government point of view. Same for your teacher: "Not allowed to know". Lessons should make you proud of your country and being a part of your society not a kosmopolite. Or how would they rule you if other countries wouldn't be a far mysterious, barbarian enemies. The same thing happens in any country.
For example we in Russia didn't learn every single USA presidnet, how many dynasties were in China, who was certain premiere in UK at a time, or idk even what else i shouldn't know. Literature that you read in scholl, science etc. aren't the same.
Every country have position "We are leaders! We are powerfull! We are good! And we must rule the world!" kinda. )
They were not taught this
