So hanging around that golf course for several hours when Trump had nothing else on his schedule was a pretty good bet. We don't know if he had been scoping out the golf course even before that day, increasing the odds of being there when Trump came through.

Was this not a case of "prepared" to kill rather than "tried" to kill? Not sure where the ATTEMPT occurs on the facts as we know them -? Or does any step towards the proximate physical "attempt" count as attempt? In other words, what are the elements that constitute "attempt" in this case?

Intent is mens rea. Elements of an offence (US"offense") are the series of facts required to have occurred to constitute the offense. ( eg compare theft, burglary and break and enter. Each crime is made up of a unique set of elements. Or "assault and battery" - you can commit assault without touching a person - assault is the threat /fear part, battery is the striking) .
It seems to me (lawyer, AU) that the guy had assembled the MEANS to commit an offense, and was loitering, and had priors, and had an obscured serial number - to me this is preparatory to an actual attempt. At trial, it goes to prove mens rea. But what is the precise "attempt" here?
In AU we have some codified criminal law and some common law case law. I was really after a more technical answer re attempt and facts indicative of men rea.
