The way he looks the older voice suites him better, but he's just an adorable goofball with the younger voice.

Nanaki is one of the characters I hold closer to my heart. It’s so sad to see what he has to endure at such a juvenile state of mind yet, Hojo is a monster and he damaged his eye, and traumatized him for life 😢 I’m so glad Aerith and the others help him so much to trust people again, he’s just a baby pup
Hojo caused so much pain to everyone, and he's responsible for his creation going mad and trying to destroy the planet by transending time, over and over again.
Aww I noticed Cloud is all smile with Red XIII. I think Cloud really care for him the most .
Red is honest and straight forward guy, cloud is bad at reading the room hence why he must feel ok with red.
I mean, who wouldn't smile with an dog, especially an talking dog!

Red can playfully exited but also quiet while the others barely ever shut up.
It's easy to be yourself with an animal. I know Red is more than just an animal, but same principle. Humans can be deceptive and cruel, so it's natural to be on guard around them, but animals are more straightforward.
It's like what Steve Irwin said. (Paraphrasing from memory.) Gators will eat you, if given the chance, but humans will pretend to like you first.
I gotta hand it to Max Mittleman. The fact he can do two voices in one character and change from adult to child and the other way around is impressive.
Barely even recognized it. Heck, he even voices Ryuji, and His Ryuji's/Itto's voice is way different than Nanaki's 2 voiced tones
The fact that it's the same voice actor makes it far more appropriate that Red's voice can change like that. Because if the VA can do it, then so can Red.

Nanaki is such a sweetheart. I personally loved his character development throughout the two games so far. Excited to see him in part 3
You often forget that he's really just a kid. He's been through a lot.
I like how both Yuffie and Red's dates have more of a vibe of Cloud hanging out with a younger sibling (well, despite the bit where Yuffie kisses him on the cheek)

When I first heard his new voice I thought my game was glitching. Nope turns out the wise old man voice was just an act and this is the real him.

Same, I lost my Golden Retriever at the end of her 13th birthday on the first of April (no joke). She was completely fine in the morning, and in the evening we suddenly had to say goodbye. She and I went through so much together during those 13 years, good and bad. But this reminded me of her. And while it didn’t ease any pain, it was at least nice to think of her again. Don’t regret ending up with Red.

Oh my god i wanted a Red date for so long since the original and it's the cutest damn thing i seen 😭 Seeing him act like a dog and the paw shake made my life complete
I find this so adorable. Red xiii acting like playful puppy, seeing him switch his personality/voice from Mufasa to young Simba makes him more interesting to me as I liked him in the original but seemed to eventually blend in the background later game.
And Cloud giving him a pet, so cute. Maybe he'll wanna adopt a dog of his own someday - he doesn't seem to like cats anyway.
Apparently Red was always meant to be like this, the original english text just didn't do a good job portraying it. In the Japanese version his dialogue shifted to sound more like a younger person then act he was putting on.

His voice makes perfect sense really, when you consider that, to his own people, Red is just a kid of 15.

I confess that, although I agree with the Cloud/Tifa couple, I did EVERYTHING to get this scene with Aerith, because I wanted to make the most of it with her already knowing her destiny. But, curiously, the character I had the most coverage with was Nanaki, perhaps because he was the character I used the most after Cloud, and this scene ended up happening to him. At first it was a huge blow for me, but I couldn't help but be happy, seeing Nanaki so happy, and showing that even though he's the oldest in the class, he's just a kid, having fun having an adventure with his kids. new friends. I didn't like this change in Nanaki at first, he seems too young, mainly because of the perception I had of him in the original, but after this scene, I started to accept him more, he's our boy! :)

You know, it's really interesting how both Cloud and Red are pretty much the same. Both are teenagers trying to act like adults.
Red is 48 years old, but in human years he's 16, Cloud is 21, but he was kept in a Mako tank for 5 years since he was also 16.

Actually he did save her, Aerith changed fate with the white whispers for her to be killed, since that’s required for her to save the planet from meteor. That’s why she’s doing an extra effort to make Cloud think she’s fine, that he succeeded (because he did) and that she’ll just have to stay at the Ancient City to pray to Holly. She doesn’t know yet that there’s another Aerith from the future, because just as Nanaki said, the black whispers did took the memories they had from the future. I suppose that, based on Zack’s foreshadowing and the conversation Cloud had with Aerith at the beach, that the Aerith from the future is coming back in some way, because who says world can’t collide once again?

this is why I love the cosmo canyon song (from og PS1) because of nanaki. I wasn't expecting the voice switch when I played the the remake. it kind of caught me off gaurd but I got used to it. 😂
Thought this (and the Yuffie one) were so sweet and heartfelt. I esp love the end of this one when Red thanks him for listening and tells him he's good company and the way Cloud kneels down to pet him.
Considering Red's backstory seeing so happy and acting his age for once is super heartwarming.
Cloud was definitely way more talkative and expressive here than with the girls lol

I just got this on my furst playthrough, I wanted tifa as the date but honeslty I'm happy with this one, honeslty feel that it fits with the rest of the story and not fan service.

What hell was with sudden voice tone change… other than that I guess the younger voice makes senses since he ultimately out lives everyone so being a younger voice works but still not what imagined what He’d sound like.
He explains that he was faking an older voice to not be treated as "Just some dog". In the original game (at least in Japanese) it was reflected with him using overly verbose and "old person" subject when speaking.
Everyone in FF7 is a subversion of their apparent character type: Red is the subversion of the "noble savage" trope, because he pretends to be like that, but isn't, because he's actually too young. This is just Red dropping the act.
I love how they gave Nanaki his own private date with Cloud like Tifa, Aerith, Yuffie and Barret instead of simply having him join Cait, Cid and Vincent
This feels like what an interaction between me and my dog would look like if he could talk and had human-like intelligence.
If dogs could talk, animal interactions would be a thousand times easier.

He was faking his voice the whole time, pretending/acting like some Noble Wise Old hero since that's what he thought he needed to do to survive, when he's actually still a young kid.
He was trying to act like a tough old man to get people to treat him seriously but he’s actually just 15 in human years.

Nanaki faked his more mature voice to try and gain more respect and to be treated as an equal. Once they made their way to his home in cosmo canyon he reverted to his original speech due to excitement. He actually does the same in the o.g ps1 game but its much harder to tell due to the english translation and lack of voice acting.

Granted, it was decades ago, and there was no voice acting, but I remember Red 13 as this brooding, introverted character. What happened to him? Also, what's the deal with the one line where he reverts to a different voice, and sounds more like what I would have expected?
He was talking in a deep voice so people would take him seriously (Watch clips of him in the remake). He is just a kid though who has been through Hojos experiments, occasionally he slips back into the deeper voice. They did this to match the original where his way of speaking changed after Cosmos Canyon.
The original game lost a bit of his personality on translation, but apparently in the Japanese version he sometimes would talk in a specific dialect that teens usually use.
He tells the truth at Cosmo Canyon that the "old man" voice was a front so they wouldn't just "treat him like a dog". He's 48 years old, but in human terms his about~15-16 years old (his species lives for a LONG time). Also fun fact since I've seen a lot of people get this wrong. It's the same VA doing both voices. As for being brooding and introverted, I don't really remember that. The first thing that comes to mind when I think red is the funny goofy scene of him wearing the Shinra trooper uniform and walking on two legs. And god I'm glad they kept that in Rebirth, and I LOVE how he rides Chocobos.

The older voice is him putting on an act. Red isn't even his real name. This is his real voice and he's much younger than he claims.

I dont know why everyone calls red a dog when hes clearly modeled after a cat. But the voice for him either way is horrible. Im still in gold saucer the first time about to have the dyne reveal and his voice doesnt sound like that. Probably changes around cosmo canyon i suspect but either way it ruins the character for me hearing his voice go through puberty.
My in-universe theory for why everyone seems to assume Red is a dog is that there don't seem to be many big cat based creatures in the FF7 universe, outside of rarer monsters such as couatls and the panther centaurs in the temple of the ancients. So everyone's first assumption when they see a large quadrupedal carnivore accompanying humans is "weird dog", because they assume a cat would be much smaller. But yeah, he's got at least as much big cat in him as he does wolf/dog, and I wish the game would acknowledge that more often.
The tail wagging, panting, and howling are all clearly cat like.
??? In the original FF7 he's revealed to be 14-15 years old by human standards. In the JP version he even drops speaking like an old man. Also cats don't howl, and Howling Moon is his level 3 limit. Did you even play the original?
Nanaki has traits of both. Even in original he was howling at his father's stone body. No cat does that. At certain angles he looks like a at and others a dog, he also wags his tail,pants. But he also growls like both animals do.Besides he has a flamelit tail and it is a fantasy game. Not too serious.

Yeah but...this is Cloud's date, and his story. This isn't some CRPG like Baldur's gate or an immersive sim open rpg like Bethesda games where you can literally roleplay anyone be anyone and do anything. Those games are great for that, but this just isn't. This isn't your fantasy lol (forgive the horrible pun haha). The two people who have a genuine interest in Cloud ARE Tifa and Aerith, none of the others do (Yuffie for ex, even tho she's a woman, comes off as pretty platonic imo), the game's story and characters shouldn't just...bend to your will because you want it to lol.

I got to this part on my playthrough tonight and was honestly really happy about this. It finally felt like Red was able to have some fun when he had been experimented on for most of his life. Seeing this guy so happy to finally be away from all that torture was really sweet.
