    Thank you for explaining your process! Am just about ready to start 'playing' with decals! Am feeling a bit more confident now about using decals in my microwave kiln. 😊

    Thanks again for your advice and for sharing your experiences, know how. I think they'd look great hanging in a window so that the colours show, because you can't appreciate them without the light shining through, although they're still lovely, especially the fish!

    Have you tried the decals that are applied with heat to see if it will transfer properly? I am just learning about working with glass and have much to learn.

    • @CaptMike
      @CaptMike 3 месяца назад +1

      I have not messed with them much. Some turnout good and some don't, but it's probably the small items I am trying to use them on.

    Off topic a bit, but do you know how to make smoked glass? I've always thought that the brown and black smoked glass, like you might find in a mid-century pendant light, is eye catching. I have never seen a video on how to produce that effect.

    • @CaptMike
      @CaptMike 5 лет назад

      Jerry, I don't know how to make it, but I know it is available in 3mm sheet form from the major glass makers. You can also sand blast glass for a mat finish. Go here and see if this is what you are talking about shop.bullseyeglass.com/sheet-glass/streakies.html

    Could I please ask how do you put a hole in the glass or the split ring to make a pendant?

    • @CaptMike
      @CaptMike 4 года назад

      April, you can drill a hole in the glass with a diamond drill. They make them in all sizes and they are inexpensive. However, my preferred method is to glue on a bail www.amazon.com/Scrabble-Earring-Fitting-Pendants-Making/dp/B07CDV68DP/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2Z7VLTEN3IOXO&dchild=1&keywords=pendant+bails+for+jewelry+making&qid=1594342754&sprefix=pendant+bails%2Caps%2C155&sr=8-1. You can get them on many site, this is just an example.

    Have you used “Fired-On” decal paper in the microwave kiln? I’m wanting to fire decals to ceramic tile.

    Great video. I have a question. Ik tried to use decals. But when it looks oke but once the glass cools down i can scratch the decal off. How long do you fire the glass with the decal on it?

    • @CaptMike
      @CaptMike 2 года назад +1

      Usually the decals come wit firing instructions, but here are a few guidelines. Preheat slowly to 1000 degrees to allow the clear backing to burn off then heat soak to 1325 F for about 10 minutes. Some decals may vary. If instructions do not come with the decals ask for them.

    would like to know your experience of using kiln paper, in the microwave kiln,
    thankyou

    • @CaptMike
      @CaptMike 2 года назад

      Of course I always treat a new kiln bottom with kiln wash first, then I cut shelf paper to the size I need. I always use shelf paper when I do glass.

    Excellent video Captain, those decals are special for glass or are they common.

    Ma queste decalcomaie, le metti in fusione o le applichi semplicemente. Grazie

    • @CaptMike
      @CaptMike 4 года назад

      If I understand your question, you simply put the decals into water and when they are ready you slide them off onto the piece to be fired, wait for it to dry and fire it in your kiln.

      So far that is all I have used. Because it is so difficult to control the heat itmight be a good idea to test at lower levels and work your way up.

    help! have you ever had a kiln crack? Now the kiln paper burns up in two minutes, and smells like burned paper.Mine cracked the second time i used it! unusable now!

    • @CaptMike
      @CaptMike 4 года назад

      Jean, do you mean a microwave kiln? I have six and none of them have ever cracked. That does not mean one won't. The kiln paper is designed to burn(decompose). The binder if the paper is made of a substance that burns leaving a thin, white layer of shelf paper. You have to repl;ace the shelf paper every two or three uses, depending on if it comes apart or not. If I was you I would contact the company I gort the kiln from and tell them you have a crack.
