    The conclusion at the end, 'it's like magic', is pretty unsatisfying for a science channel.

      True, but that's about as accurate way to describe it as we can do. Unless you can explain how a human distinguishes a cat from a dog? Because, well it's the same thing. You know the difference "because you do" it's.... instinctive, or it feels like it is. You dont have access to the underlying reasons, you just know "That's a cat, because it looks like a cat and I know what cats look like, and that is one."

      This site is mainstream and for people who don't know. You cannot perform an algorithm by seeing this, you only understand the main thing about it, like if a person like soda or not. Find other channels or forums if you wanna understand more.

    Mendeleev’s table is a cyclic algorithm with periodicity, where particles are rules of algorithm. Feinman diagrams are graphic representation of algorithm. Amplituhedron is graphic algorithm. Music is algorithm of brain’s processing. DNA is algorithm (program), it is fragmental. Every alive creature is puzzle of fragments of ancient, present, and next animals. Evolution contradicts to the second law of thermodynamics (entropy), it means we are inside a process of restoration of system. Sequence of time makes sense only inside process, but processing is simultaneous, parallel.

    A series of steps to solve a problem. A fine set of instructions performed in a sequence to achieve an end result.

    An algorithm is NOT a recipe for a computer. It's just a recipe. A culinary recipe is an algorithm. The boy got it right, the "scientist" seems to be very limited in his views.
    This is probably the most misleading video from WSF.

      @@tbz1551 What is IKR? I'm Dutch and have no clue what that abbreviation means.
      The word algorithm derives from the name of the mathematician, Mohammed ibn-Musa al-Khwarizmi, who was part of the royal court in Baghdad and who lived from about 780 to 850. Al-Khwarizmi's work is the likely source for the word algebra as well.
      If this is true they indeed exist prior to computers.

    Will ML ever be able to self-program a computer to abstractly reflect upon itself in order to make fine self assessment adjustments in a manner which humans can easily do (for the most part)?

      yes. But why would we want that?

    • @hrgwea
      @hrgwea 4 года назад

      I can't answer a WHY.
      But the trend in clear. Machine learning is a just a way to automate the process of writing programs.
      Programs are traditionally written by hand. But when the complexity of the task is beyond what a human programmer can handle, we must automate the process.
      i.e. take the input of the problem, then take the output of the problem and instruct the computer to figure out by itself what the program should be that gives those results.
      This process is called learning by example or just "Machine Learning".
      All that's left is to keep feeding ML algorithms with more and more data about the world and the day will come when machines will have enough information to understand the world in a way that's comparable to humans.

    • @merlepatterson
      @merlepatterson 4 года назад

      I don't know. I'm not so sure that abstraction of thought, much like genetic mutation, isn't a purely organic and biological function? Time will tell if a machine can replicate that process. Not to mention that abstraction also brings about the possibility of deception (just like humans) and a machine could abstract a selfish reasoning to lie.
      For Instance: We currently realize there must be safety guards programmed into future machines which give it a prime directive not to harm humans. However, what if the machine abstracts this possibility and writes a counter program to monitor for and then halt prime process runtimes just before they can be executed? In certain situations, this could be a good thing. A machine could find itself under the sole control of a nefarious human being who doesn't see a problem in harming people and the machine overrules its nefarious owners' dictates. On the other hand, the opposite could be the motivation.

      Jimmeh B Not surprisingly, that is logically flawed. Would you care to try again?
      Think about my premise
      *that most people questioned didn’t know what an algorithm is*
      Based on that you can then conclude there is a inadequate knowledge/education level of the respondents. Extrapolate that out to the population and you can generalize theoretically. Now, it is commonly acknowledged outside of the USA that trump’s election was based more in misinformation and lies than facts and is arguably one of the most partisan and uninformed electorates on the western world.
      Debate any of that and we can see where we fall on the intellect scale friend.
