  • The Alcazaba of Malaga, situated in the homonymous province of Andalusia, Spain, is a palatial fortification dating back to the Muslim era. It was constructed atop an earlier fortification of **Phoenician-Punic origin**. The Alcazaba is perched on the slopes of Mount Gibralfaro, closely connected to the city's historic centre, which once formed the old medina of Mālaqa.
At the summit of Mount Gibralfaro stands the Gibralfaro Castle.
Originally, the Alcazaba spanned a much larger area than its current 15,000 square meters, as evidenced by historical plans. Leopoldo Torres Balbás, the restoring architect, considers the Alcazaba of Málaga a prime example of military architecture from the Taifa period (11th century). Its distinctive features include a double-walled enclosure and an abundance of fortifications.
This fortress palace, known by its Arabic name meaning "citadel," holds immense historical significance. It is a popular destination for visitors, offering a blend of history and beauty within its walls.
The Alcazaba was constructed between 1057 and 1063, and commissioned by the Berber king of taifas of Granada, Badis ben Habús, as documented by Muslim historians. Materials were repurposed from the adjacent Roman theatre during its construction, including columns and capitals.
Over time, various dynasties left their mark on the Alcazaba. The Almoravids arrived in Málaga in 1092, followed by the Almohads in 1146. In 1279, Muhammad II Ben al-Ahmar conquered the fortress, and it eventually became part of the Nazarite kingdom. The subsequent renovation infused the Alcazaba with a distinct Nasrid architectural style. Its layout features rectangular courtyards, gardens, and ponds, emphasizing the interplay of light and shadow-a hallmark of Arab builders.
As one of the most significant Muslim architectural works preserved in Spain, the Alcazaba's strategic location allowed it to serve as a formidable defence, commanding views over the city and the bay from its elevated vantage point.
