#BTMunderwaterfilmingtips We love this underwater video tips playlist!
We dive daily with a Sony A6000 (APS-C sensor + 16mm f/3.5 kit lens) doing both photos and videos. What would help the most to improve our video quality: 1. a wider lens (10-18mm); 2. a clearer lens (f/1.8); 3. a bigger camera sensor?

#BTMunderwaterfilmingtips I think most of people have a simple gear for shooting their dives. It will be nice if you will make an episode showing how you can extract the best of our footages made from a simple GoPro and a red filter. It could be a challenge for you to shoot with a GoPro and a red filter and see what you can do with this stuff.
I, personnaly, have this camera and I don't want become a professional film maker. But I want to have the best result with my editing software. FCPX in my case.
To finish : As you want some details : I will go in Polynesia in september. So it will be with blue water at 20-40m with a GoPro Hero 7. And if you can do the video before my trip It will be nice ;)

#BTMunderwaterfilmingtips I like to shoot wide angle big animals underwater.
For my next underwater video camera that I want to buy in the next 6/8 months should I:
1/ Go for the next Lumix S1H not yet released
2/ Go for the just announced Blackmagic pocket 6K camera
3/ Go for the Lumix S1
    4/ Go for a classic GH5s
5/ Go for something else (but in the same budget)
(All those cameras would be in my budget, I’m looking for the best underwater results)
Thanks a million for your help!!

Should I set my white balance to match the temp of my lights when filming video? I'm unable to change it once I'm in the water.
Red filters, or no, when using lights?
    - Backscatter flip filters x3
Should I run the lights at their brightest setting, or would I use different settings at different depths. Details below...
    Details -
    Diving the Caribbean, 30 - 130 feet (10-40 meters)
    GoPro Hero 6 Black
    GoPro Super Suit dive housing
2x Orca Torch D910v video lights
    * CREE COB LED

    Question on white cards use.
(I use a Canon G12 with Recsea housing and dome)
To fill all the picture with the white card I have two options, to bring the white card very close or to use a huge white card!
I would know how to use white cards with powerfull video lights? In this case the white card becomes too bright.

Hi there, thank's for the Q&A video! I'm wondering about is there anything I should care about when I'm using two video lights. How much should I overlap two lights for nearby creature or little bit far things? Isn't there any problem from overlapped intersection something like overlapped part is too brighter than doesn't overlapped part? Please introduce us about best setting (something like direction) of two video lights. Thank you!

On lower-end housing, they often have external threads for wet lenses, which means I could attach a filter. Have you tried an external adjustable filter (530 nm to 750 nm/$20-30))? Theoretically, the 530-580 nm lets you push the green to red channels, and might allow you to adjust depth, then set the white balance accordingly. This might also be useful with the action cams.

After years of using gopro cameras for stills and videos i decided to switch to a more sophisticated gear and i am in the process of buying it.
I am watching and reading as much as possible to learn more but I couldn't find any decent information about wet wide angle lenses and red filters so my question(s) is:
Do you use red filters in your underwater filming/photography or purely rely of white balance?
Is it even possible to use red filter together with wet wide angle lenses?

I always wondered why there is the option between port. and wetlenses. Because when you shoot with wet lenses, it's much more versatile than beeing fixed to only one way of shooting. Wouldn't it be easier to just roll with a flatport and additional wideangle and macro wetlenses instead?
Or are there important benefits to consider if you shoot with ports?

I would like to hear about stabilizing a video in the post-processing. I am sure it is always best if we manage to capture a smooth footage in the first place, but I have seen different software that helps to stabilize a shaky video and the results seem to be pretty decent to me.

    My 2nd question is:
"I'm a Freediving Instructor so I shoot on a breath-hold, only using natural light. I'm currently using a Canon 5dMarkii and a Canon 15mm f2.8 Fisheye lens with a Hugyfot housing."
Since I shoot in one breath many times I can't keep the distance between my subject and myself consistent, meaning I might loose focus on the subject. Some shots are swimthroughs/lowlight I can't really close the diaphragm to much (getting a more "focused" shot in general)

I'm a Freediving Instructor so I shoot on a breath-hold, only using natural light. I'm currently using a Canon 5dMarkii and a Canon 15mm f2.8 Fisheye lens with a Hugyfot housing. My common subjects are freedivers diving down/up on a line (between 0-30m, I don't follow all the way down so I can shoot descent and ascent), and also shoot a lot of shallow fundives / swimthroughs /reef shots / marine wildlife and similar recreational footage, many of the divers or subjects I work with have very fancy smoothskin/opencell wetsuits colors ranging in (gold/green/silver/purple/red and all kinds) is there any tip for working on the post-processing of this shots for balancing these particular subjects colors without messing TOO much with the general color grading of the video. Most times I get too deep in fixing my subject's color and the general feel of the final result is not as pleasant.

#BTMunderwaterfilmingtips I am just starting out with UW video. I am using my existing GH5, have purchased a Seafrogs housing with dome port, using Leica 12-60 F2.8 lens (wont be able to zoom with this economical housing) fixed at 12mm most of the time. In one of your videos you mentioned something about calculating what you would need for weights or buoyancy arms. My Question is - do you have a link to a website or calculator which will allow me to figure out what buoyancy arms or weights I would need to achieve neutral buoyancy? I don't want to spend a lot of money experimenting. There are no stores where I live that would carry this type of gear, so I need to order away for it.

Ive thought about using a joby gorilla pod for the flexibility of placing (and underwater the tripod doesnt have to hold to much..) your thoughts/opinions?

Concerning the video you discussed trim: i was told adding weights to the port might make it leak since the weight "pulls" on the top side of the seal. Your opinion?

    Hey Behind the Mask Team,
how do you focus underwater in videomode? Do you do it manualy or do you prefer some special automatic settings to follow an Animal.
For example you have some sharks circling around you with random intervals.
How do you Focus in the same situation with lot of particles in Water?
    Depth: around 20 m
Light: Daylight more or less bright
At the moment iam just taking pictures underwater, but i want to start filming in future. At the moment iam using a Canon 7D in an Ikelite housing and i have no option to Focus manually. Iam about to upgrade my System in the next 2 Years and iam not sure on which Focus system i should focus. My Future Camera will be a mirrorless like a Canon Eos R or Sony 7III or some equivalent.
At the moment iam using for photo mode just point focus cause every other mode will give me to often blurry pics due to the particles in water.
Thanks for ur Tipps in advance!

#BTMunderwaterfilmingtips Hi , congratulations on your tutorials , they are amazing
I use a gopro hero 7 black and I would like to buy a tray and mount it on the tray along with 2 lights as powerful as I can budget permitting ( around 1500 €). Diving up to 30m deep, Main objective: wide angle, macro on ocassion.
Im new to videography so I apologise in advance if my questions do not make much sense. Well, here we go:
1-Do I have to set a minimum distance between my camera and the lights ? ( i would like my rig to be as small as possible) Is this distanc anyhow related to the power of the lights?
2- Flexible arms , regular ones or no arms at all? ( my intention is to be able , if possible, to fold back the lights and make the whole thing as compact as possible and clippable to my bcd when needed). Also, for macro, I have to point the light directly to the subject, right? could I do that without flexible arms?
    3. Should I worry about buoyancy on this so intended compact rig? how could i fix it netrually buoyant without comprimising size?
4-As I cannot change the settings of my g pro during the dive , correct me if Im wrong:
    Scenario 1: shallow depht shoots = daylight white balance+red filter+lights (+ambient filters?)
Scenario 2 : deep/dark dives (wreck, caves) : white balance matching the colour temperature of my lights.
    5. Should I consider ambient filters for the lights? what if I Cant find the right size?
Thanks A MILLION in advance for both your tutorials, your time and answers. I know it is a long text but I wanted to include everything on a single comment rather than storm you with a few of them. I care more about your reply than including my question in the videos ( it would be nice tho)
    Keep up the good work
    Regards
    Jorge

#BTMunderwaterfilmingtips Hey, if you're deep under water but still have sunlight, you have a red filter on your camera, you have two lights shining 5600k. Why don't you just do a manual white balance with the white balance card and your lights on? It should analyse the mix between the sun light (with less wavelenght) + the 5600k light and make an "ok" white balance?
Instead of making your white balance with your lights off and then turn them on? (which add red colors)
Could you explain the difference between this two methodes? (With shots exemples)
Your videos are VERY helpful understanding the complexity of underwater filming ! Thank you for your work !!!
