This is beyoond my imagination. Sometimes Pletnev shocks me with dramatic contrast, he has special abilities to refresh the music. In year 2000, he was one of the most powerful pianist In that time. I love this recording, thanks for sharing :)
Liszt's Totentanz is truly the greatest take on the Dies Irae of the romantic era, next to Alkan's Morte from Trois Morceaux. Pletnev's playing as usual is profoundly good; Pletnev is quickly becoming one of my favorite concert pianists of all time!
This performance made my hair stand on end and make me want to run to church for confession. Fully equal to the genius of Orcagn's frescos, a pianist without limitations. Another Totentanz to look out for is Ogdon's live performance from the '70's. Completely "off the wall" and as wild as humanly possibly, I think he also captures the spirit of the Triumph of death.
A fantastic performance. Vladimir Fedoseyev is always a very exciting and charismatic Conductor, too. As well as the Tchaikovsky Concerto cycle- it would be really something special if they were to collaborate in a Rachmaninov Concerto cycle! DG- and RNO. Living in hope...
I don't like to make comparisons, nor to say that someone is greater than someone else, but maestro Pletnev is in a league of his own. I don't know who the greatest living pianist is, but Maestro Pletnev is second to none!
This is by far the greatest performance of the Totentanz I’ve ever heard, even Liszt’s own students don’t compare. Pletnev has so many amazing ideas about this piece (8:37) and I can practically hear his excitement over being able to express them. One of the greatest pianists alive, I’ve wanted to hear him live ever since getting into classical music
I cannot listen to another ‘Totentanz’ after Pletnev’s came to my life... this is just Unhunam kind of rendition! Every small details I love so, but especially that small ‘canon section’ is really scary.
NO WAY 'old' parts are there!!! Quality of recording makes me think of 50 years before the 00's. So strange... and those old parts which is good... so double-brutal strange..
Great performance 👏
Absolutely fantastic! I hadn't heard this before.
Que músico ! Por favor !

I would have to add Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances to that Dies Irae list of yours.

Hair rising playing, feel like Inferno is about to terrifyingly swallow me...
Amazing! Piano theatre at its very best. Thank you
Great music making!
Thank you for sharing. Extremely perfect!
Pletnev’s Liszt is too underrated.
If you told me that is Nick Nolte looking at the score with Pletnev, I would have believed you
A little different from the other versions I have heard, but still absolutely fantastic!
From 7:44...wow!
