I have had great success by putting baffles below my bluebird houses and my bird feeders. I watched a squirrel one day climbing up the pole trying to get to the bird feeder. It could not get past the baffle and finally gave up the quest. Sparrows do try to nest in Box #1 every year before the bluebirds arrive. Their nest building is quite messy. So, I take out the mess they put into the house each day they try to claim the house. I clean it out each evening until the bluebirds finally come and find it clean one morning and the female begins building her nest. I also have a baffle on that house post.
I’ve been extremely lucky with the sparrows because they have never been a problem so far. I have since added baffles to all the birdhouses. Thanks for sharing and watching, much appreciated. Larry
No wonder,Sir can you do me a big favor by providing for me the plans for the bird house? I want to make one but exactly the way you make it, is there a way you can do that, thanks and may God bless you and your loved ones
I noticed you place the Blueburd houses on trees; I've seen many experts say n I t to do this because of predators. I attach mine to a pole. It is about 5 feet from the ground si I can also check their nests.
You did it right. The notches go on the inside for the babies to be able to climb up to the entrance hole. The adults do not need notches or a perch on the outside. They cling on to the rough surface.
I’m sorry but I don’t know where to buy the plans but I found these plans that might be helpful. www.nestboxbuilder.com/pdf/Peterson.pdf Good luck, hope it goes well for you. Thanks for watching, Larry
I rarely get bluebirds in my garden, but I plan to make a few Peterson-style nestboxes and install them in different locations around the garden. I've read that the Peterson style of nestbox is less desirable to House Sparrows or Starlings, while a variety of native birds will make use of it readily. I can see that it is a very complicated design, with unusual angles and uses a lot of wood, but I'm hoping it will be worth it. Oh, and if you feed squirrels, all you get is more squirrels. Deterrents work if used properly, but them digging up the garden is another battle to be won.
It is more difficult to build and it does take more wood but I do think you’ll find it worth it. I have a pair fussy over the one in the video for several weeks now. They haven’t started building a nest yet but they visit it several times a day. Good luck with your build.
Bluebird boxes. We need them. How much do you sell yours for or ... Maybe with a small drill I can make them.. Up here north of Asheville. I've got tons of bluebirds. Love all birds but. During a long illness..bluebirds were my company . I buy Harvest..bluebird food at Wal Mart And finally squirrel frustrating feeders can be had for reasonable prices there. Have a good day.
I’ve never sold one. I hope to make a basic traditional bluebird house soon. The Peterson house takes a lot of wood. By friend that made a bluebird trail on a golf course made a ton of the traditional style and swears by them.
@@LSatch you should. Bluebirds are finicky. A tree had to be felled .we moved their house . And they abandoned the moved hpuse....so I'm reading all my bird books in preparation for them. They stayed this winter.Dont know if they hightailed it to S.C. during snow..but I saw a huge group just a week back.. The one good things about the socials is the wealth of knowledge about everything that can be found there. Having a discussion about the proper way to build a bird house just seems par for the course. Meanwhile, I put up little houses I want the birds to stay away from.
What do you want them to stay away from? My granddaughter was walking up from the barn the other day after riding and said to my wife, “you have birdhouses and bird feeders everywhere.” My wife nodded and smiled and I’m sure was thinking, yes that’s my crazy retired husband keeping busy.😄
Nice remodel job. thanks
Thank you.

Thanks.
You say the inside floor should measure 4"x4", but I live where there are mountain bluebirds. Perhaps the floor should be 5"x5"?
Yes that’s correct. A quick google search shows these results
