The main problem, besides his voice, is that DLR isn't respecting the songs. He's improvising over them like some corny lounge singer. If he can't hit the high notes anymore, the songs can be "tuned down." Lots of older singers do that, from Robert Plant to Ozzy. No big deal. But he could at least sing the lyrics correctly, at the right place, in the right key. I don't know how getting older causes a singer to completely lose their sense of rythym and pitch.
My mic sounds great today the EQing on my voice is pretty good shout out to my long time engineer which is me by the way I do a studio show 12 times a week and when I'm on the road I have to set up a studio wherever I can as I've been doing this for so long I can do this from the studio don't forget my show on Sirius 540 and we'll get in to that later but first, let me tell you the headline of the day and this will be everything you need to know about what we've been talking about and I have to tell you where I'm going to be, this is my detailed travel schedule, because you need to know I hosted the Miss Buttermilk event in Ponca City, OK and it was amazing you all missed out on a great event and this is what I've done the past two weeks, but first I'll pick this up by commenting about something I saw at the airport when I deplaned from my first class seat because I had to take a red eye from LA after I hosted an after party for the pre-grammy show when I was in Hollywood so I had to hop in a limo because the time between the pre-grammy after party and the beginning of the pre production meeting was so short we actually had to have a security guard police escort to get to the artist entrance and I barely made it because my conversation with this lead singer oh, and by the way I have been really tied up with things, that because of my great hosting of the pre-Grammy after party I've been invited by this grammy-nominated artist hmmmm I've always said this and anyone who has listened to my show knows this and I was the first one to comment on this waaaaay back in the day when it came to "running with the crowd", I was the one who told ALL OF YOU, FROM THE VERY BEGINNING that this was the way it was going to be and an un-named source really corroborates this story and the bottom line is this I thought it was exactly what I thought it was going to be and I want to remind everyone of this I was there first when people starting talking about this and let's be honest what I saw met my expectations and nothing more did what I hear meet my expectations well I will tell you this if it was that good it can't be real and we'll pick this back up after this break
The thing that drives me nuts us2 that David Lee Roth is capable of singing. If would stay in his range and just sing he sounds pretty good. I was not expecting how bad this was though.
This is the exact reason Robert Plant no longer does LZ material. He's smart enough to know he doesn't have the chops that he once had as a 20 something

I went last night. And YES they are. I was telling my buddy that I think they’re the actual tracks from the Van Halen albums. Did anybody care though at the show? No.
@@reaganbrowne6373 Yeah, You're probably right. The original background vocals. You can hear the old DLR actually in the mix of them while he's not singing live... Just Like Paradise, you clearly hear old DLR track mixed in.

I still like how David Lee Roth still gives jobs to commentators like this guy,David set the level back in the day and your saying it never was.lol give it up buddy.you talk because Dave lives remember that
The whole “David Lee Roth was never a good singer “ thing is so bogus. In the 80’s , the Van Halen live shows were totally ok vocally. He was a WAY better singer live then than he is now . He may not have ever been a great live singer, but he was a million times better then than now , when it comes to live singing .
Fuck that was when VH were just getting into 3rd gear & picking up momentum.you lucky dawg. ( my 1st concert was ' women & children first' tour, also saw ' em at ' monsters of rock' '88, & f.u.c.k. tour '90).
It's so easy for everyone to comment. DLR is doing his thing. Some may like him, some may not. 1st show seemed on the fly. 2nd and 3rd were pretty good. The band kicked ass. Glad to see that whether DLR is 35 or 65, he is doing what he loves!!! And the buzz having been at all 3 shows, it wasn't as bad as all these comments. Maybe you should have been present, rather than watching and hearing videos clips that are not true in sound.
Bubble gum, get some mouthwash. I don't fantasize about DLR. For the record and not that I have to justify myself to you, never really followed DLR. I was in Vegas attending in order to show support for the band. So, much like Eddie Trunk, you know nothing. Don't get your panties in a bunch over my comment of trying to remain fair stating to let the artist be. At the end of the day, no one gives a crap about all these options or comments. Have a great night!
Love DLR's band-They sound great! Best wishes to DLR. He's out there and he's working hard ( so far ). Can't say the same for Eddie/Al. But, I prefer Sam/Mike than to this. I know Roth can sound better ( especially on the 2015 tour ). But, I'm not getting my hopes up ( at least, not yet ).
@@Cesar_73_Jefe HAHA! I'm not a hardcore Trunk fan either but sometimes, ya gotta make a living ( haha )! Still, all the best to DLR. Seriously though, Roth's out there, he's working with what he has and he's working to keep the VH flame alive, like Sam/Mikey. More power to them all.
Eddie Trunk takes soooo long to make a point, and I don't like how he constantly softens his opinions. "This is not a diss"..."I'm not saying they're bad players, but..." "Was it good, no...but was it the worst thing I've ever seen? No." Come on just come out and say it, DLR was terrible. And I do not agree with Trunk constantly stating that DLR was never a good singer back in his prime, so we should never expect him to sing well. Bullshit. Just look at some RUclips videos of Van Halen onstage in the 1970s. Roth sang the hell out of those songs, even while dancing and jumping all over the place. And he sang them correctly. Nothing like his terrible "lounge act" style these days, where he improvises constantly and it sounds like he's making a joke out of the songs instead of delivering what people want to hear. An awful performance and an awful review.
I too get tired hearing Trunk saying Roth was never a good singer live. Those early VH videos show what a great singer Roth was, even when drunk. Sure, he would miss a few words here and there but that's how rock 'n roll is when played live, it's never perfect.....if you wanna hear a song played exactly like the record than listen to pop music instead.
@@aussieboy77 I would say that Roth was a GREAT singer, while also being one of the most exciting rock n' roll frontmen we have ever seen. The way Roth sings now is embarassing. I don't understand why he is still doing it. But in his prime, Roth was arguably one of the greatest Top 3 rock frontmen of ALL TIME.
It's not true that it sounds live the same way has it does on a cell phone. Rob Halford sounds like crap on videos posted but great when you're live in the venue with Priest. For one, you're probably drinking at the concert, so it sounds better for that reason. But two, the live performance drowns out the vocals in the mix, and they are way more audible on a phone recording.
On a Different Kind of Truth tour Dave was still doing his thing and he was good as Dave has been. Eddie was sober to do this special thing with Wolf and Alex.

In this day and age I just dont care anymore we are old now its over we have the Videos and records to remember what it was THEN !!!
Diamond David Lee Roth was, is, and forever will be the greatest hardrock frontman while in his prime! His vocals kicked ass live along with his incredible kicks!
the fact he's not doing Yankee Rose on this tour is ludicrous. If he can do VH songs with Eddie, he can do Yankee without Steve Vai. Love DLR but maybe he's in denial.
Backing vocals are real! Al Estrada sings the Michael Anthony parts perfectly... Eddie Trunk has no respect for the hardworking Musician... Cry Baby Eddie 🐘 is mad at DLR for not letting him see the early rehearsals. Daves singing is not good, the band was excellent.
People expect things to be like it was back in 1984 but that's just not reality! At least Dave is doing something even though most think he should just retire and hang it up. It's more than what Eddie and Alex are doing. Eddie want even talk about Van Halen as a band and sure he has cancer but fans who made him famous and rich deserve to know at least something. A 5 min Twitter or Facebook post is not too much to ask! I am seeing Roth on the Kiss tour this summer and I hope he does improve but only time will tell.
I went last night which was the second show I believe. Here’s my honest review of the show. It was good, and a overall fun entertaining night. I was right up front about 10 feet from Dave and the band, and a lot of what you hear on those videos (for better or worse) you don’t really notice as much when you’re there in person. His vocals get drowned out by the band and loud crowd that’s around you. He actually had moments where he sounded great like on “Pretty Woman” and a select few other cuts like Just Like Paradise. If he just sticks with his middle register and doesn’t try and do that out of key belting things he’s developed he’s fine. I notice that he’s toned it down thankfully than on the previous VH tours. Over all if you have a chance go to the show. No merch though which was weird I thought. :/
He will still pack in the crowds. A lot of acts that have seen their better days are playing theatres in various places these days. But Vegas is the honeyhole. Most of the acts in Vegas are raking in the cash. And Dave was a decent singer on the first two VH tours. Never again after that.
Eddie, do you get paid by the word? It doesn't take many words other than "Dave, it's over!"

It’s amazing people still go see him.Its a shame because his band kicks ass.His voice is AWFUL!!!!
Ok Sammy lover. You van Hagar lover with lovey dovey lovey lovey tunes. Sammy ruined Van Halen
Kevin James when you assume you make a bigger asshole out of yourself because I can’t stand Sammy Hagar how about that!!!!! Your New Year’s resolution should be go get your ears checked
Steve Alexander Right on Steve great post. Please check out my link about Roth making the top ten best rocking roll singers
It’s that big ego he has, he is a very smart guy but can’t sing anymore
Diamond Dave. Lmfao. Eddie Van Halen & Sammy must be laughing their asses off.
I saw the Van Halen's "Fair Warning" tour, the band was on fire, and Roth was a rock god..
@@thomaskemer8109 I can do that math, thanks, anyway, professor.
Their best album if you ask me!
This is the exact reason Robert Plant no longer does LZ material. He's smart enough to know he doesn't have the chops that he once had as a 20 something
DLR can't sing, because he's smoked two packs of smokes per day, for fifty years.
You can't sing either and you didnt smoke😂😉😉😂😂😂😂
Kevin James
True statement! 👍🏻🇺🇸
The Dave VanNewton show doesn't do anything for me but on a much higher note please Get better Eddie
Took this dude 13 minutes to say 3 things: David Lee Roth could never sing live, His band has no name players (prob to make more money for himself), and that the show was no good as he expected. There ya go, in 5 seconds without repeating and rewording myself continuously
can you imagine waiting in line if he is taking a dump?
The Backing vocals are 100% canned. No doubt.
Absolutely love VH, my favourite band in the world! That said, the band sounds good, but Dave sounds worse than the last VH tour. To say that Dave sounds like a Mastodon that got trapped in the tar pits, would be a disgrace to Mastodons.
Jeff Davies Mastodon is a killer band.
"To say that Dave sounds like a Mastodon that got trapped in the tar pits" lol
It is what it is....Entertaining. Not a monster show, but Dave havin fun. Id go when in Vegas! Why not. And Ive seen Van Halen since '82 a dozen times.
Actual review starts 8 minutes in, Dave Roth, Paul Stanley-- if you don't have your instrument, don't tour !
If he didn't over-sing everything, kept his voice in the low register, dumped stuff like DTNA and put in stuff like Damn Good, Black Sand, Ain't No Christmas and One Piece Thermo Molded Country Chair he would be 100% totally fine. It's just the lack of planning and foresight that's killing this. What a damn shame.
I can only hope the best for him. He's just a likable dude.
Yes, Eddie is!!
He is a likeable dude, lot of self deprecating humor.Jeesh,he doesn't claim to be Pavorotti. If people are having fun at his shows,so what?
@@carlsaganlives5112 I don't know maybe they put on a happy face because they've spent so much money? Then when they get in the car, it's a different vibe.
Make NO mistake, DLR is the best interview. The wittiest rocker. .......And a once upon a Time great front man. Sadly, speaking I'm past tense.
What the hell is up with that guitar on the rights headstock?
justfine77777 😆, right?!?
77777 - Wow,good eyes! Your handle and apparently the # of keys are the same. We need ANSWERS!
carlsagan lives I’m a guitar player, and it’s bothering me worse than watching a left handed guitar player. 😆
He doesn't need Steve vai at this stage of the game ,why share the money
Please....while we are still young.
Eddie: You are the DLR of podcasts. This was as horrendous as anything DLR is doing on stage.
Van Halen should have had Dio front them and gone full metal instead of that keyboard bubble gum pop shit.
I still like how David Lee Roth still gives jobs to commentators like this guy,David set the level back in the day and your saying it never was.lol give it up buddy.you talk because Dave lives remember that
Bullshit Bullshit. I went to a concert in the late 80's and his vocals were great.
Spot on. The only reason I’d pay to listen to DLR live would be hearing the VH bro’s and either Wolf or Micheal on bass
Wolf on bass? Nepotism at its best...
Fbanz96 the dude can play and sing. Any fool can hear that
I contacted Ken Tamplin of Ken Tamplin vocal academy to try and get him some help 🤷🏼♂️
The Sun Dog as bad as your riff of the week
@@motorcity7137 hey I didn't write it buddy.
DLR put together a Las Vegas review show and could be a fly on act for cruise ships.
I saw Dave back when they were a warm-up band for sabbath
Fuck that was when VH were just getting into 3rd gear & picking up momentum.you lucky dawg. ( my 1st concert was ' women & children first' tour, also saw ' em at ' monsters of rock' '88, & f.u.c.k. tour '90).
Yep and they blew Sabbath out the building.
The good ole days ,Black Sabbath and Van Halen I think it was $10.00
My first.concert I was 12 was Dave Mason ,Rory ghallager and ambrosia when ambrosia was a rock band
Rory ghallager was pretty cool
Maybe Dave and Paul will sing together?
Robert Myers one things for sure ,Eddie Trunk won’t be backstage.
Steve Perry, look out !! LOL
I have a cookie, but let me tell you about vegetables for 15 minutes and then maybe you will get a cookie. Want a cookie? Want a cookie? Carrots!
Robin Zander just turned 67 and he still sings on point...
Roth can only afford his line up.
And DLR's set list is always played
In a Gutiar Center. Near you so
All kind of availability.
On a Different Kind of Truth tour Dave was still doing his thing and he was good as Dave has been. Eddie was sober to do this special thing with Wolf and Alex.
I watch tho old Van Halen Live with DLR concerts and he sounds fine as he did with his Eat Em & Smile group !! Eddie always hammers DLR vocals but there is proof he wasn't as bad as Eddie says go research for yourselves takes 10 to 15 minutes .. DLR as Important the VH as any of the other members Including EVH they just made Magic fucking period .
@tom smith it's possible he tweaks the set as time goes on but I doubt it. Probably knows he can't hit those notes anymore, idk...kinda lame
I’d go, if there was a show. I’d pay 30 - 40 bucks. And it was a 3pm show on a Sunday. 4:20
Jesus Christ Eddie spit it out!!
Or swallow it
Just flipped over to a video of opening night. Comments disabled on this one and for good reason. Good God!😬
Stone Philips Backing vocals include canned vocals from the original albums
Stone Philips - Eddie could care less what Roth is up to..
Spot on Eddy!!! I can’t fathom how people think his voice is anything but horrible.
roth should be singing in an airport lounge
People expect things to be like it was back in 1984 but that's just not reality! At least Dave is doing something even though most think he should just retire and hang it up. It's more than what Eddie and Alex are doing. Eddie want even talk about Van Halen as a band and sure he has cancer but fans who made him famous and rich deserve to know at least something. A 5 min Twitter or Facebook post is not too much to ask! I am seeing Roth on the Kiss tour this summer and I hope he does improve but only time will tell.
Dave is way worse now than he was just a few years ago. Tokyo Dome was like Pavarotti compared to this!!!
He's just grossly over-singing. Horrid.
He has always done that....
@@Fbanz96 No, he has not: ruclips.net/video/2DU11hyBEys/видео.html
Dave could never really sing. It has always been his showmanship & attitude.
Now....no idea..... He's Diamond Dave.
Band sounds fantastic
Thank you Patty. Agree completely with your comments. Well said. Band was great! And DLR, entertaining as always!.
Getting to the point 6:45 to 8:20
I went last night which was the second show I believe. :/
Fucking great recap!
Opening night wasn't quite as bad as Eddie makes it out to be, IMO
It was worse.
He will still pack in the crowds. A lot of acts that have seen their better days are playing theatres in various places these days. But Vegas is the honeyhole. Most of the acts in Vegas are raking in the cash.
And Dave was a decent singer on the first two VH tours. Never again after that.
Dave looks really old.
Hes 65 ..... he is
One show you want your ears ringing BEFORE you enter the venue.
Saw Van Halen on the last tour it was a great show. Not sure why you’re trashing him.
