- We just got the news figures out of the ATF on Suppressor ownership in America. You people are crushing it out there. With the processing time of NFA paperwork at an all time low Americans added 1.4 Million suppressors to the registry in the first half of 2024. that is more than the first 83 years of the NFA combined. 'Merica! There are many people on the fence waiting for the hearing protection act to pass. We have been here before. My message to you- don’t hold your breath; we have been here before.

Folks, I know the devices are expensive; however, this idea that deregulation of the devices is going to drop their price 50% overnight is just ludicrous.
Maybe in 10 years after deregulation you will see that kind of reduction but these are not all aluminum tubes.
Actually, once they're deregulated the cost will go up due to higher demand. It was never about the cost for me. It's about the infringement of paying a special "tax", begging extra permission, and most importantly, being put on a special list. If confiscation were ever to occur, this is a defacto registration list and the fastest and easiest to find.
deregulation will have a big impact on prices for cheaper cans for sure. 50% might not be that quick, but certainly something that is just a simple baffle stack with a hub mount will be incredibly cheap and available. those are easily mass produced. and you know someone like PSA would buy some company and pump them out like daggers. sure they won't be as good as like an RC3 or survive that kind of fire schedule, but it won't cost $1700

But, with the end of regulation - home construction will likely take off exponentially, this ease of availability and crowd-sourcing of designs will conceivably push prices lower and performance up naturally.
This is the effect of deregulation in just about any space - without the bureaucratic and administrative overhead creating an artificial price inflation, the market is free to find its own price.
Eh, I think we'll also have an explosion of new manufacturers making them if they're not regulated so heavily. So the price will probably drop somewhat. The big thing is now anyone with a bit of know how will be able to make their own! This would drop the prices of things like .22 cans especially and maybe some types of pistol suppressors. I think the extra cool high speed super performing stuff that's full auto rated will probably stay about the same price as now.

If a poll tax violates the Constitution, why is it legal to require the payment of a tax to own a firearms component?
Because laws are only words on paper unless they're followed. The anti gunners have gotten so good at ignoring the Constitution, that everyone thinks we need bills like carry reciprocity. Such a bill shouldn't be necessary because the 2A says KEEP and BEAR arms, yet here we are that if you carry into a state like Jersey you'll be arrested and jailed in violation of the constitution.

I'm confused on how they decided that it counts as a firearm, what part of their legal definition does the suppressor fit under? (3)The term “firearm” means (A) any weapon (including a starter gun) which will or is designed to or may readily be converted to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive; (B) the frame or receiver of any such weapon.
In the second half of their definition, how do they get away with using the defining word in their definition? Does that not defeat the purpose of a definition?
(C) any firearm muffler or firearm silencer; or (D) any destructive device. Such term does not include an antique firearm.

The eFile AND the The Silencer Shop Kiosk was a monumental step to make this process easier.
I wasn't able to use the kiosk but I am really happy they have that. Making the ridiculous process easier is value added, for sure.

how many states just passed voter ID? voting is a constitutional right. if you have to pay for an ID and you need an ID to vote, it's a pole tax.

It's still prohibitive. The price of an average can doesn't look too bad until you figure in processing fees and that $200 stamp.

The reality is that the ATF purposefully changed the process in an effort TO THWART A LEGAL CHALLENGE TO THE NFA. The didn't want to have to explain to a court why americans were paying $200 and waiting over a year to own something even the 1934 congress(and SCOTUS in Miller) said were 2A protected arms.
Fact is that case law on poll taxes and the Minneapolis Star Tribune SCOTUS case invalidate the NFA. Year-long wait times just give the courts an excuse to heavily restrict the application of the NFA by the ATF or so away with it entirely.
Its crazy how lowering the wait time made so many more folks buy suppressors.
The first 80 years of that was more likely the actual cost of the tax stamp

Which doesnt make sense to me. People using wait times as an excuse to not buy one were just lying to themselves, theyd spend 8 months wishing the wait time would be lower meanwhile I spent 8 months waiting on one.

How is a silncer registered as a firearm? It wont kill or destroy anything. You could leave it in a childs cribe and know your child is not in danger. The simple fact that this govt thinks it can even create a law that keeps you from freely owning something without their knowledge is tyranny. Theres thousand if not millions of laws like this.

I will wait until I can buy these as easily as the firearm itself. I refuse to pay a $200.00 tax to the government, for a right, when that same government once said, you can't tax a right, referring to voting. Which is less of a right and owning firearms and accessories, as far as I'm concerned.

I totally agree with you. I like NFA items, and I have been dealing with them for about 25 years. Throughout that time, I have heard the same thing over and over about the tax and regulations. At this point, you either pay to play or you don't. Yes, NFA items shouldn't be taxed or regulated, but we also shouldn't have to pay so much in income tax or sales tax, especially since a huge portion of our taxes are supporting other countries. There is not much we can do about either.
Imagine what the numbers would be if there weren’t barriers between a potential owner and a brand new can. I’m talking about the government introduced barriers of process and tax.

Suppressors are any type of device that muffles the sound dampens. The sound reduces the decibels of the sound of a weapon, which should be absolutely mandatory in order to protect your hearing.

Used the silencer shop kiosk at local shop. Process was more involved than i had been led to believe. I am just shy of 1 month and i believe i am very close in the process. I ordered what i did based on what my dealer showed was in stock and could get timely. Turned out they were out of stock. I hope this is what has caused my delay and not the process! Your milage may vary…good luck!

Should be 2 guns per person in your household should be 100% tax deductable. With lights, optics, slings, and suppressor included. And 1000 rounds for each weapon included.
In other words if you owe 50k in taxes and you spent 30k on guns, then you only owe 20k.

Pro tip: the NFA ONLY applies to dealers and manufacturers. As an individual they can't control what you do with your personal property. For a long time they've been able to convince the general population that they have authority over private citizens and very few actually read it 😂
I was going to wait until they were not regulated and finally said no and gave up my finger prints. I now have my suppressor and am so happy.

I applied for a suppresor the old way by filling out the paper work. Took them 1 year and 7 months to deny my application because i used the word suppresor instead of the word silencer. They also stated they could not confirm my identity and would have to supply my own background check whatever that means.
Also took 13 months to get the tax stamp refund.
I wont get one until its not taxed or registered. Its common use now, time to remove them from the NFA.

"Suppressors" should be SO LEGAL that near EVERY GUN should actually BE a "Suppressor" ITSELF. In other words, the Barrel etc. is actually designed to "suppress" sound.
In other words, so we don't have to "add" one to a gun. We have a Right to "Safe Hearing".

In 2012 I got a physical federal stamp. Last month all I received was an email with a picture of a federal stamp… I want my stamp!

If you saw what shops pay for cans, you'd be pissed at the shops that sell them. 50% over cost to the retailer is common. I can't even imagine how cheap they are direct from the manufacturer to the distributors like SS and Allen.

I HIGHLY recommend getting the electronic fingerprint file! You can take it to your dealer on a thumb drive as many times as you like. This means getting your fingerprints ONE time. Last time I bought a suppressor it took 3 days to get the tax stamp total.
I haven't had the opportunity to pony up for one yet, also hesitant to even get on that nfa list they keep of everyone who has one. I feel that is 1 infringement too far for me to want to do.

If you’ve ever completed a 4473 you’re already on a list, Dettlebach admitted that. Yes, the $200 is BS but the “list fear” isn’t a logical argument.

One instance the law reads you must be listed. In the other the law states that it's illegal for the government to keep such a database.

I hate hearing about these super short wait times when I've been waiting 3 months for a suppressor, and waited almost a year for another last year
I'm not giving the government $200.
What I've always wondered is why, two different states have my fingerprints on file, as well as the county sheriffs departments which issued my licenses, the FBI has my fingerprints from a background check when I joined the navy, and they still can't figure out how to ask the fbi for a copy and ask them if I'm still a decent guy.

Sure it's good for the suppressor industry and normalizing suppressor ownership, but it also represents a massive revenue stream for the government. The ATF thanks you for your generous donations towards keeping them funded. I don't see what's worth celebrating about this. Celebrate when the NFA is repealed.
@mcarpen89 the thing is when they become "in common use" they are required to fall off the NFA registry. And the common use standard has been as little as 300,000 units in the past. (I.e. tasers becoming common usage in court)
The $200 doesn't go straight to the ATF.

I felt this. When the “suppressor boom” started I went ahead and finally pulled the trigger on the SF RC2 I had been wanting and it came back approved less than a week!

You will be able to, methinks, sooner... than later, finally. However, SCOTUS does need to hear and get get rid of "AR" Bans and mag limit bans+, coming up! Also, the Federal Government, and it looks like the time is close, to pull The Supremacy Clause, using the National Guard and Federal Agencies... to Force Baronies, like "Pritzker's IL," to comply with Rights of the People!
If deregulation happens people wont be buying suppressors as much. They'll make their own for $40-50. Prices from manufacturers will remain constant or reduce over time.
They had all three branches of government before. The hearing act should've been passed in 2017.

I would love to have a suppressor for my rifles, but I refuse to be treated like a criminal and get finger printed. This violates my right to privacy, property, and the constitutions.

I'm at 80 days waiting for an e-file w/ digital fingerprints... Meanwhile I'm hearing some people get approved in 1-4 days.
Purchased a suppressor locally on a Saturday. Had it in my hand on the following Tuesday.
Right now, decent suppressors are still too expensive, and adding a $200 tax stamp on top of that just pours gasoline on a burning fire. Then there's the issue of crossing state lines on top of the add-on BS of transporting in a vehicle, use in defensive situations, local laws, yada yada. Then, there's the multi-cabiber issues, muzzle devices, and adapter issues. Last, what is the likelihood of the ATF showing up at my door if I have tax-stamped items versus if I don't.
They're worried because 300,000 tasers were considered "in common use" by the courts. Now there is absolutely no reason suppressors should be in the NFA and regulated.
I’m not sure that logic tracks. Though I agree they should just be able to be bought off the shelf (so should any gun,) I can’t see them correlating common use to deregulation. It will help prove common use in states that outright ban suppressors.
Well, I've been waiting over 60 days for the two I bought in early September. Not all of these take "3 days" $2500 sitting in the back room of my FFL.

I'm in the UK and I own multiple .22 suppressors. There are unfortunately restrictions on who can sell, but not who can buy and some companies even deliver directly by getting every driver registered as a licenced firearms dealer.

My first suppressor was 2 years and 2 weeks. After I got my UPIN I was approved for 2 in 24 hours. Suppressors are like tattoos you can’t get just one.

I submitted two Form 4's in October. Takes longer with my gun trust, but should be approved any day now. Got two SBR's to register soon as well. The process through Silencer Shop is dead easy once you've got everything set up.
I can attest to the quick times being approved. I've bought 4 since January. 2 of them were approved in 24 hrs. 1 approved in 48 hrs and my last one that got approved yesterday took 12 days.
This will make it harder for them to give up the income
