Geoff explained that this song doesn't appear during the film, but after it, in the credits. He describes it as a beautiful song. And he wanted to return to The Hobit in some way so he recalled his compatriots from The Misty Mountains, who were fortunately all available, to join him once again. :) Lovely to hear all their individual voices in this one. But that's Geoff.
What I really love about this one is that he didn't get as big as a lot of his other things do. He kept it in the kind of space that suited the song, because it _isn't_ a big, triumphant song, it is much more of a "something is coming to destroy us" song, so he keeps an appropriate level of... solemnity to it. It is the calm eye of the storm.
Whenever Geoff drops a new video on Patreon I get excited & sometimes he does one of my favourite songs & makes me like it even more. When I heard this I knew you were going to love it. It's Saturday afternoon in London & I've got things to do but I heard the ping that you were reacting to this & decided they could all wait 20 minutes!!!
This song brings tears to my every time as the images of what the dragon is doing as they sing their death dirge. The music always sounded like wings pumping in the back ground the deep deadly sound of the wings up and hitting low. The deadly shadow think of not being able to do anything but watch your friends and family be burned alive, eaten or drop from the sky by that deadly greedy Smaug dragon. Greed begets Greed in this deadly moment. All you can do is accept the inevitable of a horrific death. Smaug came because of the massive amount of gold and gems the dwarves had collected never happy with what they had. In the end Smaugs Greed was his demise by the greed of all races. Fabulous version he holds the tremble of fear in his voice along with acceptance of it all. I think it is now my absolute favorite.
Hey, I don't normally comment, but I just wanted to let you know that I watched this on repeat since it came out, but watching your reaction made me feel like I was watching it for the first time agian, your making good videos and please keep going
In the movie, Bard had some special bolts to use in his ballista that could pierce a dragon’s scales. In the book, Bilbo Baggins sees where there is a scale missing over Smaug’s heart. He tells a bird, who tells Bard where to aim his arrow to kill the dragon. This was shown in the animated version by Rankin-Bass.
Dave, thank you for wakening my inner nerd. So, to give this song it's real true context, it is a lament of the dwarven people. The dwarves mined deep enough that they happened upon the hibernating dragon Smaug (dragons can sleep for thousands of years at a time), the dragon was so enraged by being awoken that he destroyed the entire dwarven community, burning them inside the mountain, and those that fled were burned on the mountainside. Smaug nearly made them extinct, out of thousands of dwarves only a double-digit amount (someone nerdier than me will know the exact number) survived. The movie The Hobbit is the quest of the last sons of Durin to retake their mountain home from the dragon.
I never heard this before now, but I love it. I understand Ed Sheeran sang it for movie and I love Ed's voice but can't imagine a better version than this. Geoff makes you see it in your mind and feel it in your bones and soul. Dave, I love to watch you react to Geoff's dragon voice because you hold your breath and get orgasm face! LMAO! 😂😂😂 I LOVE your reactions! ❤
Geoff's secret for that snare drum sound? Using a shovel on sand and dirt. For easy identification, the dwarves (and clones) are, from left to right: Kili (Geoff), Bofur (Jeff), Fili (Goff), and Thorin Oakenshield (Daryl). Geoff says that clone, Jeoph, took the video off.
I have always felt that this began with the previous generation of dwarves, who had settled in the Lonely Mountain,& built a beautiful inner city of stone halls cut from the living rock, discovering gems and ore,& by their crafting enriched both themselves and the(mostly) human inhabitants of the town on the Long Lake. When the dragon Smaug came, drawn by the accumulated hoard inside the mountain, he came with merciless flame and destruction. Those dwarves living on the lower, outside slopes of the mountain saw this,& knowing that the majority of their friends and relatives, living in the mountain deeps, could not escape, flung themselves into a battle they knew they could not win, out of solidarity and love for their kin. ("Would you fight until death, for that which you love? In a cause surely hopeless, for that which you love?" R.A. Salvatore) Their only thoughts, knowing they would die, were that they would do so together,& perhaps future generations would remember that,& avenge them. And so it was, that the company of dwarves(& one hobbit) came to the mountain,& while Smaug was in the air, wreaking havoc with his flames upon mountain and town both, the human named Bard, given a tip by a crow, who had of old learned the language of Men, successfully shot Smaug in the hollow beneath his breast, in the one scaleless place where he was vulnerable to a heart-shot. In his death throes, Smaug did indeed fall crashing upon the town, destroying nearly all. And so, the vengeance that had been awaiting the dragon became as tragically deadly as Smaug's original massacre of the dwarves... The moral being: Avoid the touch of dragon's gold; it corrupts all,& brings the curse of violent death to those who would possess it. 😞💔
I found U by a Dan Vask reaction - being a fan of base singing myself (kind of my range since I was 8 (girl)) - apriciate the way U brake down the harmonics - Dan, Geof and U are Amazing. Thank U 💓
Thank you Dave for another great reaction to Geoff. Would you please do a reaction to Voice Plays cover of " Peaches" (Bowser, Mario, Luigi & Toad ? Geoff really unleashes his inner Rock God in this one. Look out Eli, Geoff is coming for you lol. This was done live. At the end one of Layne's daughters makes a cameo appearance as Peaches.
Did anyone else spot the Easter egg ? Geoff on the far right is wearing the same key around his neck as he did in " Misty Mountain Cold " But in that one the Geoff on the far right is wearing different clothing.
Ok I'm surprised no one has mentioned that Dave was talking about The Lord of The Rings when that song came from The Hobbit!! No disrespect I'm obsessed with your reactions on bass singers. ❤❤❤❤ Keep doing what you do best. ❤
VoicePlay has 'opened' a new effect on YOU Dave.......at 3:07....your eyes rolled up into your forehead.....keep a screenshot for Halloween.....lol........>^^
Dude, we need to call your stink face something else! I propose the Dragon face because that is the look you have every time a dragon breathes fire on your channel!
I like the higher voices better on this version of this song, but as usual, Geoff's amazing! I still like Dan Vasc's version the best, and I'd love a collab between these two guys. Another excellent reaction Dave.
How the Hell do you reach that low of a bass!? I've got a deep voice myself but even I can't even imagine being able to reach that depth without a cold.

I agree. I even mentioned in my comments to this on patreon that I was glad they each got a solo this time.
Lol!! That pulling out the speed stick and using it as a “smelling salts” was brilliant 😂 still cant believe you did it bahahaha
Eli with the awesome lighting work.
Geoff took Smaug to the dungeon and told him to pick on someone his own size.
BOOM!
What I really love about this one is that he didn't get as big as a lot of his other things do. Geoff could slay a dragon with just his voice! 😂 Love your reactions, Dave! ❤
This one is just so moving and gorgeous. I adore what he's done with it.
When Geoff sings Sauron looks the other way
"That was a chew right there"
Your reactions to Geoff are irreplaceable 😂

I don’t watch Geoff. I watch Dave watching Geoff. Makes his music that much more immersive.
Thank you for explaining the song's context. That made the lyrics make sense.

This song is beautifully haunting

LOVE your reactions and wait for them. I have no concept of Lord of the Rings and some games he has covered but love and appreciate his talent.

Try singing low when you wake up. Then remember that feeling after your drink some water.

Smaug? Geoff is too deep to be Smaug, that has to be at least Ancalagon the Black levels of deep
The first part of the song is very contemplative... a bit sad...
It's the knowledge that you're probably going to die, but you do it anyway.
4 videos in one day? Make sure you take some time for yourself my guy
Would you be willing to react to the version by Feuerschwanz?
Specially the one with Tom Winkler (ex Angus McFife, currently Angus McSix)
That would be a cool reaction.
