    I remember reading the postscript that Shaw was badgered into writing, Eliza indeed married Freddy, and together they borrowed money from Colonel Pickering so they could open a flower shop.

    She did, though. George Bernard Shaw said in the notes of the original play that she did marry Freddy and have a flower shop just as she wanted. The relationship between her and Higgins was always meant to be platonic, as much as they loved each other.

    • @12classics39
      @12classics39 Год назад +4

      Absolutely. Higgins and Eliza’s story works so much better as unrequited romantic love on his part. By the time he realizes how he really feels, it’s far too late.

    I'm gonna get in trouble for saying this , but too bad, here goes. I love this song , I love this character, I love this actor. I simply must say of all the men I've ever been attracted to he is my first pick. He is handsome in the extreme, has a noble bearing, this regal stature, perfect posture, gorgeous features, excellent speech patterns..... you name it, he's got it. I had this tremendous crush on him for several years, and I'm not a groupie, but I will say I'm a fanboy, and a hopeless romantic. He was just so beautiful, we'll miss him sorely, God bless and rest his soul. Ok I'll stop gushing now, apologies.

      Samuel Kirk: The beauty of movie classics like this is that even guys like ourselves can enjoy and envelop how these films enrich our lives........and they hold a special place in our hearts especially because our mothers also shared our enthusiasm in these classics. I lost my mother in 2013 and I share your sentiment. My mother was a 1930's - 1950's singer/dancer. In her later years we enjoyed watching old classics and musicals together. One of my favorite Audrey Hepburn classics is Breakfast at Tiffany's, which is a movie that changed my life. In a world full of such acrimony it is comforting to know that guys like you are gifted with true feelings and respect for art and music that otherwise would stigmatize us. No matter what anyone thinks, you keep enjoying the classics. Thanks.

      Perhaps in the future don't call movies "chick flick". It's a sexist term. BTW a movie that deals with emotions, love and has songs in it is not "lame" (as the use of "chick flick" suggests). Don't men also have emotions and fall in love too?

    When she mentioned how her aunt bit off the spoon,
    She completely done me in.
    And my heart went on a journey to the moon,
    When she told about her father and the gin.
    And I never saw a more enchanting farce
    Than that moment when she shouted
    "move your bloomin' "....
    I have often walked down this street before;
    But the pavement always stayed beneath my feet before.
    All at once am I Several stories high.
    Knowing I'm on the street where you live.
    Are there lilac trees in the heart of town?
    Can you hear a lark in any other part of town?
    Does enchantment pour Out of ev'ry door?
    No, it's just on the street where you live!
    And oh! The towering feeling
    Just to know somehow you are near.
    The overpowering feeling
    That any second you may suddenly appear!
    People stop and stare. They don't bother me.
    For there's no where else on earth that I would rather be.
    Let the time go by, I won't care if I
    Can be here on the street where you live.

Jeremy Brent was perfectly cast as Freddy, but I squealed like a little schoolgirl when I finally figured out the identity of that familiar, romantic voice. Mary Costa (the voice of Sleeping Beauty) claimed that she and all her friends had major crushes on Bill Shirley. I can imagine why...

    Freddy Eynsford-Hill, Mr. Brett, was lovely with this contemplative romantic gothic air on his face, in the late english victorian high society, these tender & serious gestures with penetrating gaze. Great and handsome actor. In Sherlock role; it seemed it was made for him, and it was perfecting. He could sing so well, why dubbed?. On this day in 1958 {June 27th} Vic Damone's "On The Street Where You Live" reached #1 on the United Kingdom's NME chart
    Two years earlier on April 21st, 1956 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; it peaked at #4 and spent almost a half-year in the Top 100 {25 weeks}
    Also in 1956 two other versions of the song charted; Eddie Fisher reached #18 & Lawrence Welk took it to #96
    And eight years later in 1964 later Andy Williams recorded it & his version peaked at #28

    Reading posts. I often questioned if the rendition of On The Street Where you Live was Jeremy Brett. I'm crushed - Not Jeremy.
    Frankly. I'm a big fan of Jeremy Brett of Sherlock Holmes British TV. Bonus to realize he was Freddy in My Fair Lady.
    One of my all time favorite Broadway songs/ballads of all time. Vic Damone has a beautiful recording of this song.

    What an incredible irony. Jeremy Brett (who turned 30 during the filming of My Fair Lady) was dubbed because his singing voice was considered too mature for the character of Freddy Eynsford-Hill. The dubbing was done by Bill Shirley, who was 43 at the time...

    • @tuijak4251
      @tuijak4251 3 года назад +3

      No, I don't think it was about "mature", but rather different kind of a voice. Shirley was tenor and Jeremy was baritone. And they wanted a tenor.

    a glittering gem from a bygone era when Broadway musicals and their cinematic adaptations were meant to make people feel good, not depress them and Al Hirschfeld immortalized them in pen and ink. I always suspected Jeremy Brett was dubbed.
    So, Bill Shirley was the male counterpart of the legendary Marni Nixon.

  • @MiTmite9
    @MiTmite9 7 лет назад +3

    It was a different man (Bill Shirley) who actually did the singing? I am crushed. It was too good to be true, that Brett would be so handsome AND have such an engaging, brilliant voice. Brett sure did a wonderful job of lip syncing.

    She should have ended up with this guy, I was so pissed that she ended up with that arrogant, controlling, misogynistic asshole Henry Higgins and not this beautiful gem of a man who sang On the Street Where You Live and accepted her exactly as she was

    • @3mdick

      The ending was obscure. She did return to Higgins but on a different level - certainly not romantic. She became "one of the guys", as it were.

    I randomly met the most amazing and beautiful girl I think I've ever seen a few weeks ago, I know exactly how Freddie feels! It feels nice to unexpectedly fall in love, basically I'm here watching this because I wish I could sing this myself (albeit not in front of her house, that would just be weird lol).

    The idiots thought it best to cut out his (gorgeous) voice b/c they found it too "mature" for Freddy and so we get this obvious dub instead. Neither Brett nor Hepburn were pleased to put it mildly.

    • @peoniesido337
      @peoniesido337 9 лет назад +3

      +xhaxha ....I heard and saw on youtube Audrey Hepburn singing the songs and i'm glad that she was dubbed by Marni Nixon as Audrey isn't a singer, but she shouldn't feel badly as she got the part she so wanted, i feel that Julie Andrews should've got the part but nothing can be done to correct that now.

    • @xhaxha1028
      @xhaxha1028 9 лет назад +5

      +peoniesido Singing was a major part of the role - had they told her from the start she would be dubbed, she might have passed. Instead she worked for weeks on the songs and then without warning, both her and Brett were informed indirectly their voices weren't to be used.

    • @brucepowell9252
      @brucepowell9252 8 лет назад +3

      +peoniesido I think the feeling was that Audrey was much more the kind of beauty they were looking for, and indeed, I feel the movie was made for her. Her voice was actually used in one of the songs quite effectively.

    • @mylesgarcia4625
      @mylesgarcia4625 8 лет назад +1

      Nah. Hepburn was signed on because of her box office power. She was really quite inadequate for Eliza. She wasn't guttersnipe enough.

    • @pashosemwengie5942

      Julie Andrews should have been cast instead of Audrey Hepburn in "My Fair Lady". Julie Andrews is a "triple threat" talented act, and it made no sense to give the part to Hepburn instead just because she had a "bigger" name during this time period. Oh well, Julie Andrews still went on from being a "nobody" to one of the biggest and most renowned stars in the movie industry after all.
