Dan you're living the life,but you've earned it.I have the Serpent on my watch list so now I have more reason to watch it.Speaking of recording,as someone that did quite a bit of anolog recording in my day I'm trying to learn about using DAWs.I'm having a rough time of it as the computer world has passed this "techno-boob" by.I keep trying though.
If I can learn to use one then you can too! There’s about a million things you can do with one but only a few that you actually need to get started. Plenty of RUclips channels will get you started. Good luck and thanks for the comment!

That fretless sounds so responsive! :) I was just in the studio last weekend finishing off some tracks, had put a lot of thought into which bass suited which song, ended up using a P with flats for old school and my Wal for the more driven songs. Thanks for you're insight.

Great video as always! Simple and informative. Do you ever find yourself needing a rosewood fingerboard P-bass perhaps in cases where a 70s maple can't get the sound your looking for? I've always wondered if it's essential to have both.
Thanks. My '68 is rosewood. Despite having all these basses I try not to think about it too much. It's more about the performance and the line than it is the bass. But, of course, it's nice to be able to choose the tone too. The two P basses cover a lot.

Thanks, Matt. That's just a practice log book I wrote to help organise and plan practice sessions. It starts off with some tips on how to practice then the rest is space to track your sessions with blank TAB/manuscript, fretboard and chord diagrams for ideas. There's a link to it in the video description.

The tone from both of your precision basses is gorgeous. I have a USA 63 re-issue precision with flats and I can't get the tone you have, so frustrating.
It will sound different as my pickups are old and yours are new. You could try something like replacing the Fender Custom shop '62 pickup.
even on You tube audio you can make out the subtle brightness distinction between the 2 P basses which only demonstrates how good your 'Flat' recording sound is. That warm fretless was lovely to hear, will you be presenting more using it perhaps some tips for playing and staying in tune? Thank you for sharing them.

Nice tips. Can you do a video on how you set up a track in Logic, Ableton Live, GarageBand? I am interested in how one automates this process so you don’t have to do a lot of treatments before recording the bass track. Same for vocal tracks. Thanks.

Thanks so much. To be honest, I only have two 5 strings and haven’t weighed them. The SR5 is light enough to gig with though. My 78 P is pretty light too. I play a lot of them sitting down though!

This is a question you should be asking a producer. But having said that, all you need is 'talent' (you wouldn't be there if your reputation didn't support the call) in the form of musicianship, rather than technique. That being the case, 'propose' don't ask: producers hate musicians that ask them what to do! Have confidence to do your job, or step aside until you do.
If you have to be told that you need something for a vintage sound (of the P bass school), and something that 'sounds' last-century modern, preferably something that 'looks' like a J bass (because producers like to think they know stuff) but doesn't sound like one (because they expect it to sound 'more' different from a P bass than it actually does), say...like a Music Man (as long as it doesn't look like one, LOL), you shouldn't be on the gig.
If he's got skills, the producer will be able to take it from their. If he is 'that' particular, the session is screwed anyway, because he's posing and name dropping and has no actual idea what the sounds he's referencing sound like or how they might be achieved. 'Good' producers never tell musicians their job, and no producer worth his salt would actually deign to 'copy' too closely another producer's (LOL) sound.
Great collection. So iyo which basses are the bare minimum to get covered any types of music? (Probably most gigs I play are rock, pop, kind of jazz/blues type of thing but other genres too... maybe except some metal stuff and all those "extreme" genres). I have StingRay 4 on roundwounds. Pretty versatile and I can tweak many sounds from it. Does it need to be Fender or maybe it could be "fenderish" custom bass with good electronics similar or the same as Fender? I consider to build some custom "studio/gig workhorse" bass and I want to get the most from it not just "one sound" thing. I assume that 5 string is a must today too... but anyway. What is your opinion? Thanks!
My main workhorse is a StingRay 5. It’s not actually that versatile but it does the job great. Most busy working pros seem to go for a Jazz style 5 string to cover everything. If it’s one bass you want, I’d recommend a 5. They’re so useful on gigs.

Very useful video as always and making me question having my Stingray5 up for sale at the moment. May I ask what strings you think work best for this bass? I don't just mean round wound or flat wound but the actual model of string. Thanks
Thanks. I use Elites. That doesn't mean they're the best, I've used DR and Rotosound on it and, to be honest, they all worked well for me. I also haven't tried every single string brand. I know what works for me (and I also have an artist deal with Elites). I wouldn't worry too much, just get a decent set and you're good to go!

Hi Dan, fan of your stuff, was just about to visit the Bass Gallery in Camden today actually. I'm fascinated by the economics of being a working musician. I was wondering, is it similar to acting? Where there is a union and you get paid residuals/royalties as the piece is played? Or do people charge a flat rate for the job? (Or a bit of both?)
Thanks. Do you mean specifically for recording? You get royalties if you write, a little bit on some stuff you play on (but didn't write). That's never enough to live on unless you've played on a lot of big records. Recording tends to be a flat fee, at least the stuff I do. I played on one song that has 100's of millions of streams and the record company didn't even credit me on the track. That's pretty common...
@@OnlineBassCourses thanks Dan. Yeah, from what I read about the streaming residuals paid to artists, it seems incredibly unfair. I think there will have to be a massive change to the model in the future, but we're stuck with this for now I suppose. Have a good weekend!

Trevor. Good question! I'd check out your favourite players and replicate that. Pino used a P bass a lot with D'Angelo. That's an incredible tone. Someone like Hubert Eaves IV used a StingRay 5 on the Erykah Badu live album and that tone is amazing! So I'd listen to your favourite player and work from there.

@@OnlineBassCourses I must admit...I don't play it much at all. It belonged to a collector that passed on and it was sold in his estate sale to a guitar shop here in Arizona. Tha'ts where I bought it about 2 yrs ago. I have played it a handful of times. I took it to stage once to hear how it would sound. I must say it doesn't fit what I need for the music I play. But...it is downright GORGEOUS! You are the 1st one I have heard that knows what it even is. Most peeps give me a weird look. 😂
I became pretty obsessed with that bass last year before doing a session that required one (I had to use something else...). Have you heard of Dave Richmond? If not, check out his playing. He used one throughout his career.

Вы не могли бы подсказать, - вот пришла мне новая бас-гитара Squier Affinity Series Precision Bass PJ Laurel Fingerboard с интернет-магазина, - красивая и внешне качественная, НО - довольно сильно фонит! Прикоснёшься рукой к крутилкам или к струнам, сразу тишина, убираешь пальцы, сразу высокочастотный фон! Дело не в шнуре, и не в усилителе, так как менял по всякому, не помогает. При игре стоит шорох и раздаются щелчки от прикосновения к струнам.. Такая картина - это же ненормально? Гитара стоит 400 долларов.. Или же и другие гитары, подороже, также создают фон!? И можно ли что то теперь сделать с этим? Очень жаль отправлять обратно в магазин эту гитару...
