17:32 That's called heel and toe downshifting. It's used since using the clutch to match the engine speed to the tyres takes too long, so when downshifting, people use the left foot for the clutch, and hold the brake with their right toe (or a bit more of their feet, as most people do), and stab the throttle with their heel whilst the clutch is depressed and you're gearing down, as this, when done optimally, brings up the engine revs in order to match tyre speed, which means you don't upset the balance of the car under braking and potentially lock up the tyres when you release the clutch.
Lmao that undercover brother orange soda scene you mentioned is a reference to initial D, this anime is fairly old and it's widely known, a LOT of car fans have seen it, so it has pop references. (Undecover brother was 2002 and Initial D's anime was 1998, manga was even older)
Yes. I'm aware of which came out first. I was just saying what it reminded me of. Its basically like the motorcycle powerslide from Akira. Many have gone on to reference it.
Initial D is THE racing IP, as far as I am concerned; this is the standard by which everything else is judged. The series creator, Shuichi Shigeno, is a huge motor enthusiast, becoming obsessed with motorcycles in his youth and even giving the protagonist's the first car he ever bought (the Toyota AE86). The hallmark of Initial D is in its celebration of rural Japanese street racing culture as well as its the physics and techniques of real-world motor racing. Initial D is to motor racing what Hajime no Ippo is for boxing: the creator was so passionate about his subject that the drama of the characters is frequently secondary to the engineering and physics of the cars and the specific techniques of the drivers. Is is over-the-top and not 100% realistic? Absolutely, but there's more truth to it than most other sports or shonen stories. Heck, there's more discourse within the initial D fandom about the portrayed performance of the cars than there is about the characters!
all i can say is, Initial D started as a dream and ended up as one of the biggest masterpiece in anime world. you can clearly see the influence IRL how it's giving birth to entirely new culture and printed new generations of race scenes. to me it is one of the most hype anime without some superpowers, fighting or some conspirations stuffs. it stayed humble from the start to finish
m.o.v.e.'s music is incredible.
