I'm writing my master's thesis right now and arguing that Cather in her Prairie Trilogy and Death Comes for the Archbishop is practicing literary naturalism, show how the lives and identity of all are determined by factors beyond their control, by matters such as race and ethnicity, class and assimilation status, place of habitation and the economic relations characterizing the place and times where they find themselves living. Then there is there is issue of individual endowment another factor which powerfully affects the course of each person life, though still only in the context of the other issues. I don't see my point of view as being a popular one, but who is going to know about this side of my faculty or possibly the tiny number of people who find my thesis online and cite it in one of their own undergraduare or graduate papers.
I'm enjoying your Willa Cather lecture and wonder if you could share the text you are referencing--the book you use for the class. I have two copies of My Antonia, but it would be helpful to know the particular textbook you reference. Thanks for any help.
