    Doug Irwin was my neighbor. That guitar was built a few miles from me near Cotati California and I remember the time well. The thing about Jerry's guitars is that they sounded good only when he played them. They were both boat anchors, weighing 13 and 15 lbs. respectively. The guys who have played them haven't raved about them other than about the aura. Apparently, they're very hard to play.

      yep cosmo, both axes were heavy and difficult to play. and this is why i am amazed how great of a guitar player J Mayer is on the night of june 23 2019 when he had the honner of playing the wolf

      @@anna42059 I'm glad that you are enjoying the Dead with Mayer. My guess is that you never saw the Dead with Jerry. Mayer is good but no magic IMO. Jerry brought the magic, at least up to 1980. Steve Kimock would be a better fit. He was one of Jerry's favorite guitar players. In fact, based on this pic, Jerry's probably turning over in his grave Lol: i.imgur.com/ro2wQ0b.jpg

    You often see Duane Allman's 57 goldtop get passed around to artists of today's time (Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, JD Simo, Marcus King, etc.) for a show or two, and it's awesome. I like to think most people (and myself included) portray that as a tribute to Duane and all of his great music. Now... you look at this guitar, and you wonder what are these two boneheads doing with something like this?? I know John Mayer had an opportunity to use it with D&C once or twice, but come on! The fans deserve to continue to see Wolf get played on stage by today's artists too! I doubt Jerry would have wanted to see his guitar sitting in a glass case in some rich lawyer's man cave...

      Jerry wanted dougs guitars returned to Doug. I'm sure Jerry had put dead $ and his own personal money into all the Irwin projects. The guitars were basically split between Doug and the dead. To say Jerry would roll over in his grave is probably incorrect. He would probably be upset all the guitars were not returned

    Jerry in many interviews supported the idea of freedom even at the expense of others comfort. He supported the Hells Angels , he refused to tell dead heads how to behave at concerts when the fans got out of control, even when many were pressuring him to say something. He was absolutely anti authoritarian and has said that many times. He believed people should have the freedom to think, believe and say whatever they want and there's no way he would have liked the idea of a joke of an organization like the Southern Poverty Law Center getting the proceeds for this guitar.

    • @rhmayer1
      @rhmayer1 5 лет назад +17

      Isaac J - you've got it all wrong, for the exact reasons you describe. Indeed, Jerry supported freedom, even at the expense of others, refusing to tell people how to behave, was anti-authoritarian, believed people have the freedom to think, believe and say what they want (unless inciting violence or racism - Jerry never supported that). With this live and let live philosophy - this is why Jerry would SUPPORT the SPLC. They both have tolerance as driving pillars of their philosophy and behavior. Jerry wasn't a white supremacist. He wasn't anti-LGBQT. Etc. The SPLC has a long history for fighting for tolerance, fighting for the rights of minorities, for equality. Just look them up in Wikipedia for just a partial, yet long list of wonderful accomplishments they've made. They've done enormous good for this country.
      That said, they are not without legitimate criticism. They have, at times, been over-zealous in their fight against racism and hate speech and hate crimes, like putting Majid Nawaz on their hate group list. They had to recognize that was a mistake - they admitted it, took him off their hate group list, apologized and paid oodles for that mistake.
      But my point is that the SPLC's goal is to protect that "live and let live" philosophy that Jerry believed in, from those that don't want to let people (minorities) live and let live - in equality.

    Don't forget, Doug Irwin was an employee of Alembic when "Wolf" was created and assembled, under the tutelage of Rick Turner and Ron Wickersham. Rick Turner played significant role in the design of the wood work and electronics of all guitars and basses produced until he departed for Turner Guitars. Wolf originally had an Alembic logo in it's headstock, which was removed and replaced by Irwin in conducting a significant repair after the guitar had fallen of a stage. Irwin then replaced the original Alembic logo with his own eagle type logo. (perhaps a little disingenuous)

    The transfer of jerrys guitars over the years are really, every ine of them, truly, strange and unexpected as far as who is in possession of all of jerrys guitars. Those guitars are all akin to a wizards staff and just how significant those things were to the making of jerrys history and his life. As chaotic as his life was, those guitars were all a certain sort if constant for him. Considering he rarely if ever changed his guitars throughout a show, every one of those classic and significant instruments ie wolf tiger rosebud alligator travis bean tophat lightning bolt etc , every one of those were essentially jerrys wizard staff of choice at one time or the other. Its a shame whats happend in terms of them being auctioned etc. Its a real shame, douglas irwin and or the guys in the band, bob phil bill mickey etc, between those guys they deserved the opportunity to be the keeper of some of those instruments. None should have ever ended up "auctioned/sold" in this sort of manner . Its a real fucking shame. Bob deserved one of jerrys guitars at least. Money rules and can buy everything, apparebtly even jerrys legacy. He would have fucking flipped out! If he knew his instruments wiuld be sold privately/publicly and entirely based on the highest bidder using MONEY as the primary driving factor in who ends up with jerrys guitar. Its disgusting.

I heard many credible stories of Jerry's adventures around Golden Gate park in his black BMW bumping into a random Dead Head and then snorting dope smoking freebase and talking life. I really think the onky reason people get bent over this is simple jealousy. And I thought that was Mayers playing Wolf. Thanks for the confirmation. The other band members make me sick disrespecting Jerry's wishes. At least Bobby was enough of a stand-up guy to (steal ? ) half the ashes and disperse them in the Ganges. There were, I believe, five guitars Doug Irwin made for Jerry. Jerry willed all of them back to Doug, but apparently, Jerry for the band using checks drawn from the Grateful Dead's corporate account. Therefore, "the band", not Jerry himself paid for them, and thus, "the band" owned the guitars, not Jerry, which meant Jerry wasn't entitled to will to them anyone. So there was a great big court battle over the guitars. And yes, over the course of the last 25 or so years, it's become apparent that, Grateful Dead management, at the very least, if not the band as a whole, aren't the "hippies who didn't care about money" that we've always been led to believe they were.

    iMO Jerry's best sound came from his Travis Bean guitar in 1976-77. Then his '57 strat, then Wolf, and then Tiger. Just my opinion but I think that Jerry's tone suffered as he got into solid state amps, effects, synths. He sounded best with a Gibson or Fender into a tube amp like a Twin Reverb or Mesa Mark I turned to 11. Natural overdrive. Not a bunch of effects to have to deal with.
