Excelent review! And I am also glad your books do not have the Disney "legends" stripe on the cover, which is the only proper way to have a clean Star Wars Expanded Universe collection 😁

Love this book! Introduces my favorite EU characters Talon Karrde and Mara Jade. Admiral Thawn and Pallion or evil Sherlock Holms and Watsons deductive reasonings through the books had me hooked as well. Just finished this and Dark force rising. Currently reading the last command and gotta say, I had more fun reading these a second time than I did all those years ago. Great EU jump in read! Waiting for a dark force rising review.

Doesn’t that technically make Thrawn more of a Moriarty since he’s already an evil Sherlock… although he did not have his own Watson. Semantics aside, I agree. Karrde and Mara Jade were definitely stand out characters that were great additions to the Star Wars canon (before Disney nuked it, but we’re not discussing that), and I think the way they handled integrating the new characters, both heroes and villains, in with the established cast was very well done. Also, while we DO have a Force wielding villain here with C’baoth, it is interesting to see a villain who is just as menacing, who’s UNABLE to use the Force. Thrawn is every bit as scary as Vader, because while Vader was a smart combatant… he was more of a powerhouse with the Force and with his lightsaber. Thrawn gets in your head in a way no other character before has and almost makes you believe he can somehow read your mind, but in reality he’s two steps ahead.

Really enjoy this book. When i saw this video drop, i decided to listen to the trilogy. I think i still prefer the canon Thrawn trilogies because I like that depiction of Thrawn more. But still an excellent book

Great reviews! And a great starting point...as this book literally spawned the Expanded Universe. It was also the first SW book I ever read.

Nice review! I read it like ten years ago or so, and while I thought it was good I never felt pulled in enough to finish the trilogy.
I like what Timothy Zahn has done with Thrawn in the new canon novels. I feel like he might look back at the original Thrawn Trilogy as a rough draft or template for how to characterize him today.
