This game is like when McDolanlds serves you a disgusting looking Big Mac but you eat it anyway because your standards were already so low as to go to McDonalds, and it tastes… good? Somehow? Like, yeah, you’re eating a Big Mac and that’s disgusting, and it LOOKED disgusting, no wonder other people refused to eat it. Sword and Shield are great games. But they are linear and have too much handholding. Hop isn't a rival to me. A rival should be one that rarely helps you and doesn't kiss your but. Two generations in a row those were our "rivals" : Hau and Hop. There was no linear order to Scarlet and Violet, it was ALL ABOUT exploration. The storylines dealt with real consequences. The storylines of Scarlet and Violet felt fleshed out. Not like the other games. Only Sword and Shield and Legends Arceus seemed to have some resolution to their storylines. The others made us think that was so but not really. You became champion, but were the evil teams disbanded or their leaders thrown in prison? Nope.

In terms of story quality, I feel that only applies to the base game and Teal Mask. It feels like a lot of basic questions about Area Zero and even Terapogos itself went unanswered in Indigo Disk, and the payoff of the Kieran arc just didn’t feel all that satisfying.

I think the story could´ve been better though, at least I wish they gave more of a resolution to the siblings´ relationship or show that Carmine is going to make more of an effort to stop being an abusive jerk to her brother. Everything from the poor world design, to the boring, extremely generic looking locations and biomes, to of course just how ugly and unappealing to look at most of the world is. The graphics are lacking, but it’s also just such bad and uninspired design, it truly amazes me it made it out of development with the world being so ugly. The Pokémon look so good too, so it’s such a shame the world is a big empty shell.
Nothing takes me out of the game more than how uninterested I am with looking at and exploring the map. 3D Pokémon worlds had better designs all the way back on the N64, and quite a few of the GameCube games not only had better world designs, they also just straight up looked better despite being on vastly inferior hardware. Making a world that looks good and people actually want to explore and interact with should be at the top of the priority list for their next game, but I doubt it will be.

Arven himself explained how Masbosstiff got hurt when first diving into Area Zero. Arven along with both Penny & Nemona get extra closure in their arcs through the multiple conversation mini academy stories for them that is unlocked after beating the Ace Academy Tournament. If you be ng Terapigis to the lake in Kitakami you extra story context. Not to mention the journal entries in the Area Zero Stations and the new ones from the new DLC related parts also give much more context. Briar is literally Heath's descendant and her actions are reflection based on how he was treated in the past. Team Star gets even more story after beating the DLC story in Paldea Academy. It's all there and plus another epilogue story that is not "officially" released yet until later in the year, that gives the main characters for both storylines a bit more focus.

Like there is no challenge at all and when you dont get challenged, the whole experience becomes boring. Why would i care about strong pokemons, when the game is so easy that i can beat it with my starter and a backup pokemon?

SV+DLC felt like the end for me with the games... I love the Pokemon ip but I just hate how the games are treated in terms of quality... I can forgive PLA cause it was something new, a spinoff that was quite engaging and felt a lot different yet something the franchise really needed imo. this is the main line game and should be treated with at least a bit more respect imo. it feels a lot buggier and feels like I am playing something worse than what a ps2 could output in terms of visuals and frame rate. idk how the world's largest grossing IP can't bring up a better performing product than this one to introduce their new Pokemon that will be the marketing for everything new in terms of merch and media. the overall main story was ok for a Pokémon story but I really hated Kieran, the kid's anxiety gave me a headache. even if the new quests reward me unobtainable legendaries from earlier games, I cant help myself to go through this game anymore. I was disappointed by all this tbh.

I'm gonna' go out of the way and be the weird one in the middle:
No I don't think Scarlet and Violet are the best games in the series if you just give them the chance.
But no I don't think it's a dumpster fire. It's a fire. And there's a dumpster right next to it. But the dumpster itself isn't on fire.
Played since Gen 1, played nearly every Pokemon game (skipped a few Mystery Dungeons and Rangers). Fave Gens were 1 and 6.
Fave Pokemon is and always has been Hitmonchan. Don't have any hate towards any of the new pokemon designs. Don't got a problem that they keep mixing up the formula - so long as, one day, they bring all of these mixes together into one cohesive game (here's hoping it's in Gen X).
Now that we got all that out of the way...
If you have Scarlet and Violet: The Indigo DLC is worth it.
If you don't: Then it's not.
    Simple, isn't it?
If you care about filling out your pokedex, especially for the following generations: The DLC is very worth it.
If you care about building your teams quickly for competitive or casual tournaments, including for following generations: The DLC is very worth it.
If you care about story......... I mean....... it's certainly not the worst portrayed story of Pokemon. One can still argue that Sword and Shield was the worst. It depends on your taste.
Is the DLC worth it if you've been avoiding Scarlet & Violet all this time?
Only if you care about completing pokedexes and prepping pokemon for non-story battles.
Why so? Because Scarlet and Violet are built in a way to speedrun catching, leveling, and prepping teams (held items, evs & ivs, moves, etc). And the DLC is much moreso. You can build dozens of teams in a single day, get them to the levels and stats you need them to be, equip them with the right items, and have them ready for any tournament/match you're gearing up for. If you want to casual battle your friends... play Showdown. But if you want to casual battle your friends within more official settings and more solid gameplay-feel, get this game along with its DLC.
Also, the amount of pokemon you can catch in this game + DLC is insanely high. You want every legendary for your pokedex? You want every starter? You want those pesky pokemon they decided not to bring over from previous gens (except for alolan meowth and raichu for some reason)...? Get this game and its DLC. It's future-proof.
Why not just wait until the next gen to have the same thing + a better experience? Because Pokemon ISN'T KNOWN for bringing its best features into future generations... Pokemon World Tournament, anyone? For all we know, the next Pokemon game can be far more traditional in order to meet the expectations of the TENTH INSTALLMENT OF A LONG RUNNING SERIES... which sounds like an awesome thing... until you consider the fact that traditional means banging your head against eggs over and over and over again just to build a team that you love. Traditional means taking an eternity to build any team for battle. Traditional means sawing your head off in order to complete a pokedex. Traditional = More fun, but far more inconvenient.
Not saying that Convenience > Fun... But I am saying that Convenience = Less Headaches.
You want less headaches for Gen X? Then it's best to invest in Scarlet and Violet + DLC while the iron's still hot, rather than having to beg people during Gen X to go back to S/V to help you gather Pokemon, mochi, and BP... because frankly, IF Gen X is better than Gen IX: NO ONE WILL WANT TO GO BACK TO GEN IX.
If you think dropping down $90 for the sake of convenience is stupid......... wait until you grow up and realize you have a very limited amount of time to do anything. $90 to get rid of hundreds of hours of headaches is actually a very good deal. And if you think that Pokemon's nickle and diming people for how "Pokemon should already be"... No. Ew, no. Pokemon SHOULDN'T be this easy to raise up teams. It's the reason why people think the newer Gens, since Gen 6, have been "too easy". Frankly, if we had Traditional mechanics in Gen 6-forward... if we had Arceus mechanics in Gen 6-forward: We'd genuinely believe that Leon is indeed the strongest champion ever. We wouldn't think Geeta was "Gawd Awful" (maybe just Awful). We wouldn't think that the journeys were lackluster in their challenges. Pokemon SHOULDN'T BE THIS EASY.
However... it being easy also saves us a lot of headaches... especially for people like myself, who run casual tournaments on a bi-monthly basis.
The tournaments I used to run in previous Gens used to be SEASONAL, just to ensure everyone had time to legit-build their teams.
Kids without a job would just kind of sit for months, twiddling their thumbs, agonizing for the next tournament because they got done in a single week. While the adults would feel rushed to breed the best teams just so that their time isn't wasted when the tournament starts.
With this game + its DLC... everyone can have their team done BY THE END OF THE DAY.
So if you want convenience, drop $90 for this game with its DLC.
If convenience isn't your forte, or if you're willing to risk to see if they'll bring this level of convenience into Gen X (I do highly doubt that they'll bring the unique Poke Balls gacha machine into it... which is honestly really awesome and I'll miss it dearly), then don't waste your money. Because its story isn't compelling enough to sell it.
And if you're here complaining about graphics + performance... calling it "ugly"...
I mean.... sure? But Pokemon, outside of Gen 4 and 5 (and the spin-off games), has never looked amazing. If you want a great-looking game... I think it's time for your to move on. Pokemon looks great when it looks great, but you can't bank on it to look great, especially with the current infrastructure of the Pokemon Company + Game Freak + Creatures. The artists and programmers can work their butt off, but let's be frank: Unless the Pokemon Company hires professionals from (outside) major companies, they do NOT have enough time or manpower to make the pokemon game of our dreams. Arceus only worked because they gave the team complete freedom and a loose deadline. You can't expect the mainline pokemon games to ever get that sort of treatment (and btw, Pokemon Company only considers Arceus a mainline pokemon because it sold so well... but let's face it, it's basically a Emerald, Crystal, BW2, OmegaAlpha, SM2... aka: the in-between game a part of the studio creates while the main team works their butt off for the next mainline entry). 5 years IS NOT enough time to build a 3D pokemon game with their current team size. AT LEAST SEVEN YEARS is required now. If you push for the Pokemon Company to change their deadlines from 5 years into 7 or 8 years: THEN you can expect amazing graphics.
But as it is... only expect to be disappointed.
Not trying to excuse the poor performance of the latest entry.
But saying that it's seriously not a factor for people who play it.
If it's a factor for you, again: Please move onto better pastures. There's a lot of pokemon-esque games out there now with amazing graphics. Don't die on this hill, man. It's not worth it.
The whole purpose of my rant?
I skipped out on the Sword & Shield DLC because I didn't particularly enjoy Sword & Shield (I loved it at the beginning... and then I realized how shallow it was and grew to despise it). And I felt confident in my decision to skip out on it due to everyone's clamoring of what they added to the DLC. They were just shouting on and on about catching Legendaries, and Kubfu, and going into those ultra Raids... which... uh... I HATED THE RAIDS IN SW&SH. I have friends to play with, and those Raids caused serious pains in our relationships. I can't stand them. At least in Scarlet & Violet (their Raids are awful too), you're GUARANTEED TO CAPTURE a beaten Raid pokemon. Still horrendous of an experience, but not as infuriating/disheartening. Plus, I'm not really into Legendaries. So...
I thought I made the right decision. But, years later, when I looked into what was in the DLC, there were a TON OF OTHER FEATURES I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT BECAUSE NO ONE CARED TO TALK ABOUT THEM. THOSE features I was GENUINELY interested in, not all the crap about Raids. I regretted it after that, but I wasn't exactly in the mood to buy it and beg people to play with me again.
Point is... If there's something in the DLC you REALLY like the sound of?
The DLC is worth it. There's seriously no guarantee these features will reappear in the next Pokemon game.
If you've researched the DLC thoroughly (rather than just listen to other people ramble) and you found there's nothing there for you?
    Ignore it and move on.
Whichever you do, don't brag about Scarlet & Violet (it seriously isn't perfect), nor trash and hate on it (it seriously isn't a dumpster fire... just a fire with a dumpster).
Just, you know... live your life, you know? This game isn't worth your worship or your rage.

None of these people even like pokemon games, and none of them understand how games are made. Yes it runs and looks like shit at times, but its a turn based game so doesnt matter that in terms of gameplay. These same people (not actuially fans of pokemon) moaned for years about how pokemon games hadnt evolved and had the same formula as the original gen 1 games and were not open world rpg games yet (even considering they were on the ds lmao) and how they are bad games because of it. When the pushed the hardware and made that game people always said they wanted those same people moan about how the perfoamnce is bad (im sure most of them have never even played on a switch before as SV isnt even that much worse than most other switch games). Hating pokemon games is a circle jerk and none of what these people say are valid criticisms (even alex in this video reviewing this dlc said he hadn't even actually properly played the game and has been one of the loudest people shitting on SV and getting other people who havent played it too also lmao).

I think its very fair scarlet and violet get criticized for ongoing performance issues, and the storyline is half way there, but its also a kids game so I haven't ever really expected much in that regard. It might be a connected chapter and considered differently when we get other games. Hoping the effort they put in to make attacks and movement more realistic just becomes the baseline for the next games.

The story in the first DLC is the first time I've actually had a pokemon on my team just because of how much I fell in love with them(Ogrepon) and in general the story we've had is more than we've ever had in pokemon history. I just bought a 3ds and replayed black and black 2 and the story while not terrible has not held up as well and was pretty edgy if you aren't a 10-14 year old. The models again have been amazing especially for a lot of the new pokemon they brought in.
Honestly while flawed games especially with their performance, this game with the dlc is top 3 for me all time next to platinum, legends arceus and oras. If this game had decent performance I think for most people it'd be top 5 all time with the dlc. That being said the DLC should've been 15-20 dollars at most not 35.

I would've accepted performance updates alongside the release of the DLC (better late than never), but even that didn't happen. It's a real shame. I'll not only be skipping the DLC but I'm also going to wait and see some reviews before I decide whether or not to buy the next generation when it releases.

So I won't buy it ever.

They need to release Switch 2, i play at friend and games are laggy af. Instead of Oled they should add better APU and Ram...jesus its laggy.

I liked the DLC so far. Could have been worse or better.
These tons of graphic issues but as an old gamer since NES im used to this. Not really acceptable for 2023 but still playable.
Teal mask story was boring af, but the second part of the DLC is way better and funnier. With lot of end game content.
But imo, they should keep their game the old fashioned way. Cause they are really bad at making 3d games, yes the hardware isn’t powerfull but they manage to do games like Mario Odyssey which is run really well, so it can be made right.

EXACTLY! The sole reason for Pokémon to have moved to 3D was because it was popular and got them more money. If they returned to 2D, it could maybe earn them even more money, because 3D has not been very good recently...

The fact that this game chose to remove Trainer, Gym and Elite Four Rematches, add mid DLC, and not fix any of its framerate issues… and the fact that I still go back to Pokemon Crystal after putting it down, means that this game has earned its C+ grade at best. Lots of potential, but so much disappointment.
I might be done buying Pokemon games… didn’t even get this one at full price. The only thing that would pull me back in is if they make a Gen 2 remake and do it properly.

Because GameFreak hates building on anything they have to put effort into.
I'd go a step further and say that ORAS was their peak. Even without the Battle Frontier, the Pokemon formula was perfected here. It was all downhill from there.

i dunno, maybe it's just me... there's this certain place in the terarium where my game slows/freezes, the area where you find Blitzle and Zebstrika... i'm actually surprised that aside from that, the game runs better.

I'll only play this game once a Switch 2 comes out, hopefully the backwards compatibility has a performance boost.
Shouldn't have to seeing as TOTK runs fine but the Pokemon company cares more about profits then quality.
