This is such a great little radio for the price. I have been using one at home for a few months now and I love it. No frills but it does what it does well.
After playing around with this radio for some months, I am more and more satisfied. What's really missing is a good instruction manual. When understanding all the functions of this radio, it's pretty good for it's price. And well beyond that. I have also tested the AT-778UV with a spectrum analyzer, and there is *no spurious or harmonic emissions* above -60dBc up to 3.2GHz. So it should satisfy most technical regulations worldwide. At least EU and FCC. The receiver section is good too, but not comparable to ICOM or Yaesu when it comes to selectivity and sensitivity. But it's almost as good. And it looks so good.... If you program this radio with CHIRP you can have your own callsign as startup-screen too.
i tried using chirp to program mine, it left a garble on the welcome screen instead of my callsign and strangely it didn't, or seemingly didn't program in the receive tone squelch for each repeater i programmed in, switching to anytone's programming software, it was able to read what i had put in with chirp, and i added what was missing. so for now, i will just use anytone's software until chirp gets to a reliable state. for completeness sake, my radio is a 778uv II, so the original 778's might be a better fit with chirp.
Thank you very much for the solution to the noxious Beep! I had just received the radio and couldn't find any directions in the manual as to how to turn off the Beep. I was ready to return the radio but a RUclips search brought me here.
Thank you for making this video. I have been on the fence about buying one, having heard lots of good things about it but not necessarily needing another dual-bander. I wasn't sure how difficult it was to program, so I appreciate your video. I may pick one up now and repurpose one of my other ones. :)
I've got 3 of these. One for a base, and one in each of my cars. I program them manually cause I'm not a computer person. Being involved with my local ARES groups, it's best to know how to do this without the computer. They have been great little rigs. CHEERS from Colorado
I've had this radio in my pickup for just a few days and I really like it. I wish the screen was a little brighter as it's difficult to see in bright daylight. I also changed the microphone hook to a standard button type. Took 30 minutes to program the entire unit with Chirp. The 25W/15W/5W feature is nice. The closest repeater (and the one I use most) is only 5 miles from me so I certainly don't need to be on high power to reach it. Curious what the longevity will be as it appears that the less expensive radios don't have a long lifespan. At any rate, for $130 it seems to be a great little radio.
mine is in my apartment, power supply is a pyramid ps14kx, the antenna is a dual band jpole hung on the wall of my bedroom. have to stealth the installation, no outdoor antennas allowed.
I’ve been having some trouble with voltage drop when transmitting. It could potentially be the antenna but I think it’s mostly the power supply. What should my power supply be rated at(amps and voltage) for successful operation when transmitting?
"12 Volt" (really 13.8 Volts) and at least 10 amps, preferably 15 or more. You could be facing an SWR issue. That can cause the radio to draw more current. Also your wire size between the radio and power supply may be undersized and may drop voltage with current. If you have any wire splices check that they are crimped good.
@@JDtheEE I also hear reports of very poor transmitted audio when I do transmit. You can’t even hear me when I transmit to a repeater 8 miles away because the audio is so bad.
@@zacjohnson9293 Sounds like RF may be getting into your radio. This can be caused by SWR, which is caused by bade cable or antenna. It could also be the reason you're drawing more power making the voltage sag. Or it could be the other way around and that the radio goes squirrelly when on lower voltage
I’m very excited to get mine. Would you be able to let me know what kind of antenna set up you’re using with it? I’m new to this hobby. I want to set it up in the house instead of my truck. Thanks KI5RGM

I am uncertain about it's used on 446 PMR as I am unfamiliar with those regulations. However I do know that PMR 446 is similar to our FRS band. Those only allow handhelds with permanent antennas. So no, it will not work on PMR446

Well, after reading all the comments, i'm going to be the oddball. The software of course is a piece of crap, And manually programming is not as easy as your video. My radio will not transmit even on a simplex frequency. It receives but it will not transmit. Do you have to program the radio to transmit on it? I mean is there a setting for transmit?
It sounds like you may have some other issues if the transmit is somehow locked. I only programmed it the way I show in the video, so I'm not familiar with the software. What software did you use? If it wasn't Chirp I wouldn't use it, but again I only manually programmed this radio. How do you know it is not transmitting?
Maybe you mean just for entertainment use. As for the work and use of comprehensive communication, transmission and reception, it is not at the required level and this thing is not useful because the distance is very limited and its range reaches only 5 miles in open places. As for ICOM 2100, ICOM 8000, and other models, their range reaches 50 miles or more, and when using the long Larsen antenna, the transmission distance reaches 80 miles or more.
@@mr.classic. The Anyone mobile is perfectly suitable for communication. On 2 meters it only does 25 watts versus those other radios that do 60+, but if you can not hit a repeater at 25 watts, it would be unreliable to hit at 60. I'm sorry you probably made a bad financial decision and purchased one of those instead of the anytone which offers much more flexibility and the same "distance" as the others. Your comment really is absurd and I'm tempted to just delete it.
