  • Hey everyone !
Today is a bit of longer video as it's been shot over a two day period. For a while I've had this Kockney Koi Widemouth Skimmer sitting in the shed gathering dust. Recently I came across some tutorial videos on setting one up so I thought I would give it a go. With the help of my Dad's Christmas present it made it a lot easier, albeit after bending a few saw blades :D There is still a final part of this install as I wanted to spend a proper day installing the skimmer before I cut through the liner. The challenge came because of the structure of the sleepers which has put me off for a while. But with the gusto of a new year I decided to have a crack at it !
Hope you all had a great start to the year and I look forward to seeing more of your videos !
    Josh

Yep they work great, used in my pond build recently and cut the bottom off to 4” straight into my drum… I did fibreglass mine in though so slightly different fit 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Yeah it’s always a daunting time cutting the liner and installing the skimmer so I want to give myself enough time to do it properly. Really glad you enjoyed the video 🙂

Hi Josh, you'll wonder how you ever did without it, when she's up and running, it will definitely re energise your interest when you see the sparkle and cleanliness on the top of the water.
I could never get enough draw on my certakin skimmer with 1.5" outlet pipe and pump, As others have said, I cut bottom of skimmer and fitted 8"or 6" (can't remember) rubber boot to 3" pipe and gravity fed it into my drum, regulating it with a slide valve.

Cheers Marek ! Great to hear from you 🙂 it certainly has sparked the build interest and passion. As this is the first build I am sticking with the 1 inch and a half to begin, then if all goes well I have another section and spare skimmer to use on the “slack side” of the pond and will aim to maybe double up and that one will be the 4inch fitting. Today is just fitting the skimmer and then in a few weeks I’ll have a start on plumbing it in somehow.

The piece you don't quite know what it is is a vacuum attachment attach a hose to it to and use it as a pond vac

Hey, I sold the sieve and have just tried to simplify my filtration setup for now instead of faffing around. Hoping to keep the pond steady ready for the spring 🙂

Getting there Josh, if you don’t get enough pull via the small diameter return, other I’ve seen cut off the bottom rubber boot and 4 inch pipe back to filter. More pull for your surface area, low expansion foam to fill in around skimmer, you could frame around for more support, most of the pressure is at the base.

did you know putting washing up liquid liquated on your thingers stops silicone sticking to your hands.?

Does the wide mouth come with rubber gaskets?

a tip by GRP lining ( they do carbon fibre ponds) that you use silicone over the joint between the two parts.

That’s exactly what I did 🙂 I spend up a lot of the video otherwise it would have been hours of me ramblings about silicone 😂

the thing underneath is a wall support only useful for those temporary blue pools.

i would recommend you get some sponges or towels to push the liner out so you dont cut it.

Isint the skimmer supposed to be on the opposite end of the waterfall? This way the water flow pushes the debree to the skimmer. I think it should of been at the end of the pond.

Hi Richard, the return will be changed to a solid pipe pushing along the far side. This means that the flow of the pond will be going around pond and ending where the skimmer box is. On an in ground pond the skimmer like you say would be better placed by the end of the pond if there was a waterfall and depending on how this install goes I’ll be adding another one at the opposite side.
