What I thought the first time I heard her sing ? My first thought was not about the vocals as I am not very knowledgeable in that matter. But I have a bit of knowledge in acting. I am an actress and could not believe what I was witnessing !!! This 9 year old child understands exactly what this mature woman is saying " Want it or not, you are mine ", with such authority and menace, anger, threath (sorrry about my poor English), and with all the nuances of what such a flawed mature woman goes through. Ive watched this nearly everyday for three years since my first time. Just to see everyone trip out and have thier brains get shook. In primary school she enrolled in an after school program where she learned how to read, deconstruct and rearrange music and took guitar and piano lessons which she still plays today. The only voice lessons she has ever had have been on how to protect her vocal cords. So you see, it’s really not so hard to understand, Angelina Jordan Astar is a musical prodigy who works her butt off to become the superstar star she said she wanted to be on Norway’s Got Talent in 2014. She probably has the most highly trained vocal cords of any singer on the planet. Practicing 4-6 hours a day starting at age 3 for 15 years will pretty much guarantee that, don’t you think?

I heard this about 6 years ago and was shooked ☺ Whenever I see a reaction to it, even if it's done by a voice coach or some other professional in the music business, if the reactor makes stupid comments or fails to realize what (s)he is witnessing, I don't subscribe. I think, in all those years I have only seen two or three professional voice coaches who reacted to this performance with comments that were dismissive. I had already subscribed to them for their reactions to other singers (like Morissette Amon or Dimash) but, unsubbed when they reacted to this because it was so evident that they couldn't handle the existence of a prodigy.

I suggest that you fast forward to last month when she sang Unchained Melody at the Nobel Prize Cerimony honoring an Iranian woman who has been in prison for 9 years for promoting woen's rights. Angelina's grandmother is Iranian. She met the woman's childern who are the same age as she prior to the concert. In this context the song has very strong meaning and impact. It is one of Angelina's best performances, just exceptionally eautiful music.

If you get a chance to react to her singing Back to Black at age 10 you will be amazed. Her momma told her she couldn’t do the song because of the adult content so she rewrote the lyrics to the exact same music only one day prior to her performance. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on RUclips, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she can convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener. This is Angelina's tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original. There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed. Another Angelina "Angel" has pointed out something else which I had missed, and it is added at (l) below, (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled. (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers. (c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it. (d) The smile on the face of the Bass player. (e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine" (f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand. Possibly to remind herself of the last minute changes she wanted. (g) Her unwavering passion throughout the performance. Evidenced by her facial expressions and the way she uses her hands and body to emphasise the direction of the song. (h) The way she takes a breath just before she starts the last phrase (I don't care.....) and that breath lasts the whole of that sustained note. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time. (i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word (j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody. (k) Perhaps the most remarkable is that despite her tender years, she sings with such total conviction that her authenticity is never in doubt. It is easy to believe that she has experienced the events described in the lyrics. It is not only her voice that is mesmerising, it is also her facial expressions, and the way she uses her hands and body. Her stage presence is electrifying. (l) The performance absolutely is powerful and raw but to me, I am amazed that this is balanced by the profound beauty of the ending phrase; the last twelve words of the song. AND… they are essentially sung a cappella! Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

As a fellow musician I really appreciated everything about this track. The filming and the band, everything was just so perfect to let you really enjoy Angelina's voice. By the way, you CAN growl, I'm sure of it. Don't hold yourself back. Get some coaching from someone like "The Fairy Voice Mother" and you'll be growling in a few minutes. You clearly have the artistic sensibilities to be a great singer, so go for it! Great reaction Richard! As you can imagine, this performance has blown a lot of minds. This is a wonderful tribute to the Jay Hawkins original, apparently her own interpretation. Despite all the growling and screaming you notice her voice is never dissonant. She does not know how to make a bad note.

It's unreal like her, from a very young person, she choice to use her incredible passion and understanding through music in a splendid way, especially for these legendary songs. She was only 9 years old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, an American singer/songwriter. He wrote and performed it in 1956 and Angelina based her performance on the original, although she did make some subtle alterations to both lyrics and melody. As you continue your journey of discovering Angelina, you will come to realise that she does her own arrangements of most of the cover songs she sings. The differences may not be immediately discernible on first listening to them, but they are there. There may be a subtle change in tempo or tone, or more inflexion on some words, or a phrase may differ in pitch from the original. When people tell you how good Angelina is, you still can’t really understand that until you hear songs like this. Angelina is, simply, the best singer I’ve ever heard.

I suggest that you fast forward to last month when she sang Unchained Melody at the Nobel Prize Cerimony honoring an Iranian woman who has been in prison for 9 years for promoting woen's rights. Angelina's grandmother is Iranian. She met the woman's childern who are the same age as she prior to the concert. In this context the song has very strong meaning and impact. It is one of Angelina's best performances, just exceptionally eautiful music.

If you get a chance to react to her singing Back to Black at age 10 you will be amazed. Her momma told her she couldn’t do the song because of the adult content so she rewrote the lyrics to the exact same music only one day prior to her performance. She is also performing with the same orchestra KORK ( if I spelled that right ) that she just performed with at the Noble Peace Prize concert. It’s truly amazing . Thankyou for your reactions. Thank you for featuring Angelina again. I hope you will do many more reactions to her, as she is well worth every nanosecond you spend on her. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on RUclips, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she can convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener.
This is Angelina's tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original.
There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed. Another Angelina "Angel" has pointed out something else which I had missed, and it is added at (l) below,
(a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled.
(b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers.
(c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it.
(d) The smile on the face of the Bass player.
(e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine"
(f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand. Possibly to remind herself of the last minute changes she wanted.
(g) Her unwavering passion throughout the performance. Evidenced by her facial expressions and the way she uses her hands and body to emphasise the direction of the song.
(h) The way she takes a breath just before she starts the last phrase (I don't care.....) and that breath lasts the whole of that sustained note. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time.
(i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word
(j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody.
(k) Perhaps the most remarkable is that despite her tender years, she sings with such total conviction that her authenticity is never in doubt. It is easy to believe that she has experienced the events described in the lyrics. It is not only her voice that is mesmerising, it is also her facial expressions, and the way she uses her hands and body. Her stage presence is electrifying.
(l) The performance absolutely is powerful and raw but to me, I am amazed that this is balanced by the profound beauty of the ending phrase; the last twelve words of the song. AND… they are essentially sung a cappella!
Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

As a fellow musician I really appreciated everything about this track. The filming and the band, everything was just so perfect to let you really enjoy Angelina's voice. By the way, you CAN growl, I'm sure of it. Don't hold yourself back. Get some coaching from someone like "The Fairy Voice Mother" and you'll be growling in a few minutes. You clearly have the artistic sensibilities to be a great singer, so go for it!
